Why the Xbox One isn’t doomed

4Player - "With the news coming out of these recent console press conferences and e3 showings us a lot more I’ve noticed a lot of trends. People seem to hate Microsoft with a passion for their decision to add DRM to all of their games, have the Xbox One unable to play used games, and always having the Kinect plugged in. Conversely people are praising Sony to high heaven because their new console can play used games, doesn’t have to connect to the internet, and is cheaper. People started using phrases like “Xbox Done” and “Xbone” stating that the Xbox One was dead and Sony was to be crowned King of Kings of this console generation that hasn’t even really started yet. Personally if I had to choose a console right now I would go PS4 hands down, but I am trying to play Devil’s Advocate a little bit so here is why I think the Xbox One isn’t dead."

A well written article that was informative as well. Nice to have a mature take on things. Fanboy or not this was a good refreshing read and made some good points that I hope people will take into consideration.
Now I wonder how many are just going to read the title and then spout out their opinion.

shoddy4726d ago

How the table have turn.
Xbox have more doom articles than playstation

CrossingEden4726d ago

This is THE most mature and intelligent comment i've seen on this site.

showtimefolks4726d ago

i will tell you why, because there are enough uninformed gamers who will see advertisement and buy the system, and than you have the moronic fanboys will just aren't willing to see the shortcomings of xbox one

it will be successful but it will come in 3rd place behind ps4,wiiu and than xbox one

you can fool the casuals with advertisement but not the informed gamers, also i believe places like gamestop will inform people who come into buy a xbox one to go with a different system. Than you have redbox/ganefly who will inform their members on what the future systems can and can't do

ps4 will get a lot of free word to mouth advertisement

Fluke_Skywalker4726d ago

I was thinking the same. Sony may have the best console, games and policies, but Microsoft have still got the best marketing department and the deepest advertising budget pockets. So the casual market, who they are clearly targeting anyway, will still lap up the Xbone.

Thirty3Three4726d ago

@Showtimefolk:

I agree 100% with everything you just said :)

I find it funny though. You were talking about those stupid fanboys for xbox who just refuse to see its shortcomings - they downvoted you :I

Captain Qwark 94726d ago (Edited 4726d ago )

Or maybe some people just like what they see and dont believe any of these concerns are nearly as big a deal as everyone is making them out to be. For examples.....

1. DRM on all games. Is it great,no but there are benefits. Discless games, cloud gaming for any of my titles. Sharing with family, playing my entire library from any Xbox without carrying around 20 disc. Downfalls, servers go out, I'm sol but I can't remember a time Xbox was ever out for 24 hrs or more. My internet goes out, I can use my phone.

2. Cost. Yes 500 is a lot of money but guess what, so is 400 and when spending that much, that extra 100 isn't going to be enough to sway me. So I have to save a little more.

3. Used games. Digital distribution is the future whether you like it or not. I would always prefer hard copies but I said that with music albums too and after many years, I dont even own a cd anymore. Change us scary but here it is, someone has to take the first step on consoles. Steam is all digital, nobody complains of DRM ( I realize steam is less strict and perhaps ms could lighten up to 48hrs or a week but in any case, see my number one ) or not being able to lend or trade in their steam games.

5. Always on. Not a big deal to, its a nice features to have updates always prepared, being able to tell my Xbox to turn on and to navigate to w/e I want without picking up a controller

6. Internet required. Bold step here and while it does negate some people, that's why we have other systems. That said, everyone complained when ms did broadband only on the original Xbox too, praised Sony to the heavens for offering dial up and broadband, then looks what happened. The future, ps3 was broadband only. Ms was just ahead of the curve, its possible they are here too. Time will tell. Also nobody bats an eye at their 500 smartphone that's useless in those same areas without broadband and more or less useless without having to have a. Data plan. Same scenario here.

I could go on for days easily defending the Xbox simply because I think its made some bold moves to push things forward. Time will tell if I'm right and while I dont necessarily like 100% of everything I see, I am loving a lot of it so I'm in. Not because I'm a fanboy but because I've seen everything both offer and I'm still more impressed with x1. All that said, I'm not gonna sit around and bash and criticize every tiny thing I dont like about ps4 because I dont need to waste my time. Everyone on here has already made up their mind so it doesn't even matter what you write, in fact to most on this site, they won't even read what I wrote here and think logically about it because they have already convinced themselves ms is the devil

I_LOVE_MYSELF4726d ago

@Qwark

How is discless games a positive for Microsofts implementation of DRM? We already have the choice to go discless and buy off the consoles store. Forcing discless is a negative whereas giving the option is a positive.

Or maybe that's just me.

badkolo4726d ago

your delusional if oyu think wiiu has a chyance and your even more delusional thinking the xone doesnt have a chance in this, it does more, has more games and does more and has more games and comes with kinect, a full system, not a addon system(ps4) ms made trhe smart move and will take you kicking and screaming until you all wake up. get with the times.

showtimefolks4726d ago (Edited 4726d ago )

Captain Qwark 9

Been playing games for last 23-24 years and not anytime soon will we see digital distribution take over, people still like buy their games and holding on to them or resell them once they are done

read DD will not be successful is this:

you walk into a game store and see something for $10-15 well you may pick it up but digital distribution will not put a lot of games on sale, just look at psn and xblive, most games on there are still fully priced

also it makes a huge difference $100, and that's more in UK and europe where xbox one is even more expensive,

don't get me wrong no one has a problem with connection to online, my ps3 has been connected for last 6-7 years but the issue is when they say you have to do it, so when i loose net connection because of weather or stuff i can't play my games?

i live in new Orleans last hurricane knocked down my net connection for 9 days but guess what my ps3 still played games, so you mean to tell me DRM is fine because MS is just too stupid to realize everyone won't have great net all the damn time

i hate how you as a gamer are defending them when they are trying to put all sort of restrictions

also your thing about sharing games, here is how it works my game can be given to another friend who has a ps4 and he can play than give give it back to me so i can play it again, no forcing me to only gift it once

no matter the sugarcoating, MS will learn the hard way how you don't mess with your fanbase who made your successful in the 1st place

badkolo

lol you will see why it has no chance, price matters. You can foll the people in USA but not world wide and there is a huge world full of gamers outside the USA

from day one ps4 will outsell the xbox one and will never let go of their lead, yes i can see into the future

and before you call me a fanboy i bought a xbox360 at launch, scalyranger667 is my xblive, why did they have to do all that crap when xbox360 was so successful without all of it?

and reason you think MS showe more games is because they didn't show anything on may 21st when sony actually showed bunch of stuff in February

if sony held everything back than we would have been blown away

Knack
KZ
Infamous
Drive club
Gt6
beyond 2 souls
Ff15
Ff14 exclusive
KH3
KH hd collection
Destiny Demo
actually spoke with issues like DRM
$399

its over, in your eyes they didn't show anything but in my eyes they showed a lot and still have gamescom and TGS, sony will bring some Thunder at TGS too

pompombrum4726d ago

@Captain Qwark

1: They could technically do discless games and cloud gaming without these silly DRM restrictions. Instead of making us check in to Lord Microsoft every 24 hours, how about they done a 24 hour disc check in to prove ownership?

2: Valid point, the cost of either console doesn't bother me, it's the fact the Xbone costs more because of an accessory forced on me that I don't want.

3: Key word "future" the future is the future and not today. Right now, not everyone is there.

mmccarthy44726d ago

qwark so well said. Why can't be happy quality exclusives are all around. I'm also glad all the xbox exclusives were core and no gimmicky Kinect titles. MS exactly what they needed to at e3 also infamous and drive club look sick on ps4. I also agree ms is just going all out with cloud and being ballsy with always online which will have it's benefits. People say ms is looking for a cash in but I believe they are going to bring one hell of a gaming experience via cloud. I always think there is more to a console than hardware and ms is making a lot of right moves. However all the wrong moves sony is picking up on and I think sony will outsell off the start but I see it changing in a few years if cloud takes off.

Igniter4726d ago

I'm going to agree with Qwark on #3. Some people won't have many games to even trade in this next gen. Games will be available to download on day 1 now and there are a few advantages to DD.

Saving on gas driving to the store. I know people who travel an hour each way to pick up new releases. Money saved!
Games can be queued to download when released. No waiting till a store opens or staying up late to go to a midnight release. wake up in the morning and the game is ready!
Pre-order bonuses. Digital copies of games may get better bonuses. If a publisher wants to cut down on traded games all they have to do is make the pre-order bonuses too sweet to pass up on the digital copies.

darx4726d ago

Downloads for me! Discs are so 1999.

That's for PS4 and XB1 when the time comes.

The article wasn't that good. Especially the part that attempts to explain how used games are damaging the industry so badly it forces developers out of business.

This is simply hyperbole.

Claiming that developers are 'losing money' because of used games, is also bypassing the debate of whether you have the right to resale something like a game or not. Personally I believe you have that right.

Claiming that used games get sold on 15 times (O RLY??), and that if they didn't they could lower the price of a new game.

Frankly this is someone living in La La land.

Excuse me while I live in realist town.

Publishers will categorically not lower the price of their shiny new games if used games suddenly become blocked overnight.

Publishers would have their cake and eat it, every game new, every game sold full price.

Call me a cynic, but I prefer to be called realistic.

Most of us on this planet live in capitalist economies here, we know how the system works and especially how most big corporations that produce these games work.

Profit. That's how they work. As much as you would like to pretend they run off the goodwill of gamers and the praise of their quality products, nevertheless, what drives these companies is money.

It as if this guy is pretending these publishers are all hard up and used games restrictions will save the industry. Give me a break- the videogames software industry is now apparently worth over $20 BILLION dollars a year. Believe it or not thats virtually as much as the entire gross domestic product of a third of the countries on this game addicted planet.

The past 30 years, we have had used games. Why suddenly is it now the great Satan?

MORE profit. Greed. That's why.

Coupled with the technology (tinternets) finally being widespread enough to practically restrict used console games. They just couldn't resist the opportunity.

TheInfamousNolan4726d ago

I agree with you about owning games and that's something I thought about touching on when writing this article. When you purchase something that's tangible you should have the right to sell it if you want to. I am however of the opinion that used game sales and game rentals are affecting publishers and developers. There is no denying that studios have been closing a lot lately and a lot of that has to do with their games not selling well enough. Though it could also be the fact that a lot of games lately have been sub par, which is why people rent/trade them in the first place.

adorie4726d ago

Soon as I read the tripe about used games, I gave up reading. That is the main argument between the systems and as Majiebeast said before, Used Games are the new scapegoat. I believe this is true 100%.

If Sony's model can somehow outshine the seemingly endless supply of ad monies MS is prepared to spend to trojan the Xbone into homes, then maybe the industry will movbe towards their model and things will improve for us.

I don't expect games to get cheaper, but I wish they would, I'm not sure it is realistically sound to think they would come down in price, but hey, that's what USED games are for, right? :)

kneon4726d ago

The real problem is that there are just too many games for the size of the market. We can only buy so many games, no one has time to play everything.

So many games sell less than they should just because there is so much competition. But the problem is self correcting. The weaker devs will fold, only the strong survive.

wollie4726d ago

what so many dont realize is that most used game revenue (money people make from selling games) goes right back into the market.

The used game market actually facilitates more NEW game purchases, because actually owning and being able to sell a product increases the value of that product to the average consumer.

If the used game market is killed, you will see less new game sales, and small studios or non-AAA games will feel it the worst.

This whole ploy to make used games the enemy is ridiculous.

ProjectVulcan4726d ago (Edited 4726d ago )

I just think this used game thing killing the industry is cobblers. Utter rubbish nonsense apologists saying it.

Fact is PC has a very minimal used games market, and it does struggle somewhat for support. PC gaming isn't dead or dying, but it isn't dominating either. It has a very specific and rightful market.

Now I am a PC gamer, I love it (it has its ups and downs), but MOST of the real money is on developing and publishing console games. It is a larger percentage of the market. I acknowledge this.

PC exclusive developers have been falling over themselves to abandon PC exclusivity, or PC development focus, to bring their games onto console.

Seriously.

If the used games thing was that deadly for the industry, then why have developers persistently rushed the past decade to the platforms that supposedly 'suffer' from high used game sales? I.e consoles!!!

It is utter tripe. If you REALLY believed that used games are a deadly virulent plague then you wouldn't rush to the nearest infected individual and repeatedly lick their armpit would you?

Whats happening is simply the games market is diversifying, mainly into mobile gaming markets. Gaming in the past for the vast majority was confined to your living room or PC etc. Now it has spread significantly onto mobile devices, within just the past 5 years.

So all the traditional huge corporate publishers in particular are struggling to corner such a diverse market with many smaller indies being successful on small budgets, they throw their toys out the pram and demand home consoles be locked down.

A feeble, anti consumer, unjust response and knee jerk reaction to seeing their ultimate power in the industry potentially slip sliding down the toilet in the next decade or so.

showtimefolks4726d ago

wollie

very well said, when people trade in games most of the times that's so they can buy newer games

so you block people from trading in games and they will buy less newer games and will wait for huge price drops or sales, and we all know money in the first few months of game's release is what counts and that's where publishers make the most since game sells for full $60 price

In terms of sales, the Xbox One will do very well in first couple of months to a year.

But as soon as more people become more educated about its policies, especially casual gamers, that's when it'll go downhill for Microsoft.

They had a very solid E3 performance. Their console will be a success, even if I won't help make it one.

karl4726d ago

gee.. i wont help either .. but if xbox doesnt loose a good amount of followers.. u can expect DRM and all that other crap on the ps5 for sure..

the only reason we are paying for online on playstation is because it was a success on xbox 360.. they did it and ppl pay for it..

its not a fucking riddle.. and SONY is not stupid.

now, can i believe this time xboxfanboys will react and think about the future of gaming and where MS is trying to take us? well, i agree with u.

the console will still be a success

badkolo4726d ago

youll see some form of drm on the ps4 regardless of what was worded yesterday. and this only applies to disc based games, since every game is available online as well same day, then what happens in a few years wehn sony or ms simply stop selling disc based games, then what?? cause if you dont think thats coming your blinded

karl4726d ago

what are u talking about.. u can already buy digital copies of games.. just as disc based

u have the choice and many still like to buy the physical copy ...

as long as that happens digital copy wont be the only option ..

as ive said u vote with your money.. and some sort of DRM? damn dude, doesnt that exist already? with online authentication?

its possible with ps3 aswell as the ps4.. and we still dont see it very often ..

but the new xbox will permanently have it regardless of what publishers or xbox gamers want..

reef10174726d ago

Very well written article. As the writer said nothing is set in stone however when your competitors console is open, without restrictions, stonger and $100 cheeper. you are really making it easier fror the public decide.

aviator1894726d ago (Edited 4726d ago )

Nice to see something a little positive about the xbox one, but, yeah, that $100 difference is going to be swayed heavily in the favor of the ps4.

I suppose now all we can do is wait until these consoles launch to see the results.

NatureOfLogic4726d ago (Edited 4726d ago )

From the article "There are a lot of good elements and improvements in the Xbox One that make it a fantastic gaming machine. The ability to start downloading a game and play it while it is still downloading is incredible; even if you are in the situation where you have slow internet that could make a world of difference for you. The ability to jump in and out of games instantly is fantastic and is not a gimmick like a lot of people claim."

Everything you mentioned can be done on PS4. There's just no amount of spinning that can make me even consider getting the Xbox one. I'm noticing a lot of people trying to look at the positives and ignore the negatives like they don't exist. Wake up people. Xbox one is not good for gaming period.

Overall, good read though. I just felt like the article was trying to be too convincing rather than informative.

nightfallfilms4726d ago

Just like looking at the negatives and ignoring the positives?

ThatCanadianGuy5144726d ago

When the negatives vastly outweigh the positives it should sound some alarms to anyone with common sense.

YNWA964726d ago

The debacle that was PS3 meant Sony had to step up to the plate this time, and they did, really good, and it seems people have now forgotten that Sony, did in fact try to screw them with PS3 launch. Remember Sony have shareholders, and profit is Almighty.... Just be careful what you wish for.... Sony becomes too big again, always the chance they will try dictate to you again....

TheInfamousNolan4726d ago

I understand those things can be done on the PS4 as well, I never said they couldn't. I just wanted to mention some of the good things the system could do despite its flaws.

NatureOfLogic4726d ago (Edited 4726d ago )

For me personally, I wish to see the Xbox one fail for reasons that should be obvious for the average level-headed person. But I can see where you're coming from. You being a fan of 360 and all. I can see why you're looking at the positives of the 360 successor in a favorable manner, rather than pointing to it's flaws. But I feel like the way MS ignored it's primary fanbase shouldn't go unnoticed by us gamers. Instead of talking about the positive, lets talk about the negatives and let MS know that we as gamers do have a voice. Rather than praise, lets reject and hope that MS takes us more serious in the future, not only as gamers but also as comusers with rights. The article was still good in it's own respect. + bubble for you

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio21d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing21d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9221d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit21d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing21d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9221d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay23d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn223d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn223d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown23d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay23d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay23d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac22d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger23d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300023d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde23d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde23d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_22d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
