Xbox One did not lose - yet

The console war is far from over. Sony may have DRM and price advantages, but Microsoft showed more Xbox One exclusives yesterday.

Still, many great games were shown, including some multi titles like The Division, Destiny and Titanfall.

"Xbox One did not lose - yet"

Keep telling yourself that, the only games I even care about on the Xbox One are Halo and TitanFall.

+Halo I'm sure I can live without
+TitanFall is coming to PC

I have no reason to buy the Xbox One and I can't see how they can change my mind to pay nearly £100 more for a less powerful system which doesn't include devs such as ND.

Gazondaily4734d ago

Yeah but these are games that YOU like.

I was very impressed by Project Spark, Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, Quantum Break and Killer Instinct.

RiPPn4734d ago

Project Spark: wasn't interesting
Dead Rising 3: wasn't a dead rising game, but looked decent
Forza: Can't judge, not into racers
Quantum Break: we still don't know enough about this game to say anything about it
Killer Instinct: Looked like a generic mortal kombat

Definitely none of those are system sellers at this point, and everything else they showed can be played better on other machines.

Ritsujun4734d ago

Throwing the Xbones to feed those hungry-s CODogs.

Hicken4734d ago

To quote you, Septic:

Yeah but these are games that YOU like.

no_more_trolling4734d ago

you guys are like a broken record
every year since 2006 is the same thing

dont you guys ever stop? if someone is gonna buy the ps4 thats their choice, and likewise for the xbox one

miyamoto4734d ago

" A solid beginning may mean a perfect ending" for PS4 ( emphasis added) - Power Stone 2.

Blackdeath_6634734d ago

Project spark is on pc aswell not an exclusive so is titanfall. witcher 3 is a multiplat so really not much going for the XBone apart from halo which i've never played. so i'm all good.

AkitAtikA74734d ago

Sure it's a great lineup no doubt, but numerous developers have said how much easier it is to develop for the ps4, given the lower price point, it's fair to say sony will have the best games throughout it's console life...Sony PS4 win's this battle, day one purchase for me.

asmith23064734d ago

@Septic, I have always been a PS fan but I have had three 360s (two died and I traded the last one). You are completely entitled to your opinion and some of them games do look great.

Point is, I will not buy Xbox One because of the fundamentals of Microsoft business strategy with Xbox One, regardless of how good some of them games look. Whether it is government, or jobs, or companies shitting on people, they always think they can get away with it and they usually do. Sony has come out against the tide of anti-privacy, etc that is going on across as sectors of our lives and I applaud them for having the balls to do so.

I wish everyone would follow suit and support Sony and not these companies that think it is their right to f**k us over.

JokesOnYou4734d ago (Edited 4734d ago )

I loved microsofts E3, Im still excited from what I saw but I think they need to do 2 things over the next few months that will make X1 a huge success:

#1 Show us why its an advantage for games to have Kinect2 standard out of the box.

#2 Need to get publishers to commit to no used game fees.

Brazz4734d ago

It's over! Sony PS4 won! The only thing that can give Xbox one the upper hand is a Critical fail in PS4 "like the Red light of death" or/and some major X-1 favoritism from 3º party estudios like EA making shit like M.Effect, Dragon Age and Fiffa Exclusives (very unlike)

NewMonday4734d ago

@JokesOnYou

thats the way of a true gamer, but I want to add:

#3 get rid of DRM

#4 we must have full rights to the disc based games we always had, including selling and lending.

#5 disable online check ins

#6 X1 should be fully functional without Kinect.

let them know what you want, if ANY company thinks they own you they will take advantage of you, if MS gets enough of a shock they will have no choice but to reverse the bad policies and cut their losses, just like Sony did with the PS3 and look at them now.

Urusernamesucks4734d ago

@Rippn, lmao you havent even played ANY OF THEM.
theyr probably uninteresting because your a tottal fanboy.

djsandman4734d ago

The strange part was I imagined somehow this time both sides would respect eachother.. The Xbox showed all the games and PS showed nothing that wasnt multi platform or cgi.. I think both consoles will be good but holy shit Sony fans need to stop circle jerking.

BullyMangler4733d ago (Edited 4733d ago )

what is this . . ? . everywhere on N4G ??

why deciding who wins E3 without 1st waiting for E3 to be completely over and all games have been PLAY TESTED before deciding who wins? < (:

Fanboys like; " Oh this was announced and oh that was revealed sony wins microsoft loses nintendo ha ha haaa nintendo "

tss (:

psyxon4733d ago

eh. most gamers will have a ps4 and a pc. you can play project spark on pc if you really want it. i definitely won't be buying drm box for that. it was great though.

Maybe Xbox One hasn't completely lost yet but it'll be hard for a console with so many restrictions, weaker hardware and higher price to compete with the PS4.

Alexious4734d ago

That's true, but in the end it's all about games and honestly yesterday Microsoft won in that regard.

Still, it's a long way from over in any sense.

Jaces4734d ago (Edited 4734d ago )

MS did show more exclusives but half of them weren't as interesting as they seemed.

-Ryse was a lot of QTE
-Spark was a lot like LBP
-TitanFall is PC too
-KI...yea they just killed that with free to play and having to buy each character, that and Rare had NOTHING to do with the game in general.
-Quantum Break looks good but not enough shown to truly know how I feel about it.

That's about it for my thoughts on what they showed. Not as strong as I thought it'd be but they sure did keep their promise with more games at E3.

MizTv4734d ago

Jaces
Is that really true you must by all the Characters Separately?
If so that sucks!
And yes I think ki looked stupid and Rebellion is a Horrible Developer

Ju4734d ago

What games? None of those are system sellers. IMO if those are exclusives you really see the performance difference to begin with. Those "exclusives" weren't even close to Sony's "exclusives" nor are they any more interesting.

Saying they have more is a joke, isn't it?

KZ:SF
inFamous
Drive Club
The Order 1866
Knack

You can bet that continues which is still in the pipe (ND, Quantic Dreams, ...)

And in all honesty, there is/was still

The Last of Us
Beyond 2 Souls
GT6

for a nice transition. Going by games alone would be debatable right here. Ignoring the lower price and the better specs and no DRM.

@Alexious: I disagree. It's not about games for me when Microsoft are screwing with my consumer rights. I think they showed some decent games but I really couldn't care less as long as they have this restrictions. Also it looks like MS fired all their guns at ones while sony just had to say we don't mess with the consumer rights to win E3. Sony still has a lot to show in the coming months.

KyoSiegfried864734d ago

^This. It's not about games, it's about gaming. As long as gaming is full of restrictions, One can have what it wants, I'm still not gonna buy it. And yes, it seems as if Microsoft already said everything, while Sony can announce more games during the TGS or Gamescom.

Alexious4734d ago

This is only speculation at this point.

Linsolv4734d ago

@Alexious

Disagree maybe? I'm not sure what you said, it's a bit vague.

There's no speculation here. MS is clear that they're messing with consumer rights; Sony is clear that they're not.

If you meant that Sony still has a lot more in the tank? That's speculation. I honestly doubt they've got a massive collection of exclusives.

Still, PS4 came out ABSURDLY strong after day 1.

OlgerO4734d ago

That dead rising looked freaking insane though. Hope its a timed exclusive or otherwise I will have to miss out on it

GenericNameHere4734d ago

Wait wait! Dead Rising one is still Xbox 360 exclusive. Dead Rising 2 used to be a 360 exclusive until it went to PS3. Then Off the Record or whatever released on both PS3 and X360. Why the heck would Dead Rising 3 be exclusive? You've had your past two games on the PS3. Why not add a PS4 version too?

4734d ago
andibandit4734d ago

Well unfortunately Dead Rising 3 IS exclusive to X1, but i can problably live without, or hope MS snaps out of it's coma.

too many xbox exclusives are Xbox/PC games. I remember that whole argument back in the early days of PS3/Xbox.

Exclusive to microsft means xbox and pc. That is not exclusive.

Good for you man. ND is one of many great devs out there and this gen hadsnt even started. I love what sony is done by calling MS out in their own backyard. Lets see how they respond. Things have just got interesting and they havent even launched. Its going to be a great few months before launch.

medman4734d ago

Not to mention this guy seems to forget the obvious...Sony has killer first party developers. Naughty Dog alone should be enough to convince fence sitters to buy a PS4. The Last of Us? Beyond:Two Souls? Quantic Dream anyone? Suckerpunch? Sony Santa Monica? The Order:1886? Sony's conference delivered everything you could want. A more powerful system? Check. Great pricing? Check. An online component that pays for itself in a few months time with quality, recently released games? Check. The next Naughty Dog exclusive? Check. God of War? Check. A plethora of indie games? Check. If you don't buy a PS4 and buy an Xbox One, that is a you problem. You have some serious issues. Self loathing and self flagellation is apparently something you enjoy. Good luck with that. PS4.

titletownrelo4734d ago

Little Big Planet is the shit! Project Spark can go self destruct along with the Xbox One.

Urusernamesucks4734d ago

Fuck naughty dog. Ms has allot great studios than just 343. YOU CAN LIVE WITHOUT HALO, WOW that's great i can live without Un_charted. Being a weaker system dont meant shit as long as they got AAA devs making them games.

Wich they do: Ryze, Project spark, Quamtum break, Forza, Killer instinct, Titan fall, Dead Rising, and so many others. They all impressed me exccept for theyr indie games.

sAVAge_bEaST4733d ago

While weaker hardware usually gets a lead in the game.. the X1's MORE expensive and more restrictive.

People go for the cheaper with very similar offerings.

Psn8004734d ago

I think there very deluded and think us gamers are dull , you got a console coming out that is cheaper has no restrications on used games plus you can play off line and the cheaper model is more powerful it's called the Sony Ps4.Ms didn't you know that .

horndog4734d ago (Edited 4734d ago )

Right here bro!! Have NEVER had internet issues as long as ive had it and have NEVER bought a second hand game. Have borrowed from a friend yes but back in the super nintendo days before free demos were available on line. Have always liked the xbox exclusives better and thats the only thing holding me back from going full ps4 only. Many in the same boat as me. Sony has learned from last gen so hats off to them for coming back to claim the market. Sony is playing for broke here.

vega2754734d ago

If they fix the use games and drm issues before the launch of the system then they can still pull it out. I like the games they shown and would like to buy both systems at launch.

FullMetalTech4734d ago

If its only a matter of turning off an option then that would work. But they'd have to change the policies in place and make software adjustments before launch. They pretty much showed they want full ownership of the media and not in the players or consumers hand. They already shot themselves in the foot even having this in the first place.

vega2754734d ago (Edited 4734d ago )

They shot themselves thinking sony would follow suit and would win over publisher by doing so. But its nothing they cant repair overtime if they would correct their mistake with the 24 hour checkin and use game drm.

Sony to made plenty of misstake last gen and redeemed themselves. But only after they ate humble pie and stop being arrogant. Same as want MS needs to do if they want the xbox one to sell snd get back their fanbase

MRMagoo1234734d ago

They cant change the online every 24 hours drm with out a complete overhaul of the system , you have to install the full games so therefore they need a way to make sure you arent sharing with other ppl since you dont need the disc, if they cant fix the lending and renting of games "renting and loaning wont be available at launch" in the 5 months before release how in the hell are they gonna be able to change the whole xbone system ?

Festano4734d ago

I think Microsoft is a must buy, on Sony showed nothing new, the price is in favor of Ps4 but we need to see what's on offer for that money!

Hicken4734d ago

Most gamers know what's on offer for that money.

More powerful hardware is just the start. See comment 1.5 and the responses to it for a list.

rmedtx4734d ago

Microsoft is a must buy? is it because you prefer to be charged for used games? or maybe because if fun to be required to be connected to the internet at all times? or maybe because it's more expensive? oh, I know... it's probably because they are investing a billion dollar in bribing companies keep games exclusive.
Even if MS changes any of the policies to match Sony's, it shouldn't be supported because they wanted to abuse consumers in the first place. If they change that is just because they were not allowed to get away with it.
BTW... Bribing companies to keep their games exclusive is an unethical business practice.

dveio28d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing28d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9228d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit28d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing28d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9228d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Athlon10131d ago (Edited 31d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit30d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg30d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10130d ago (Edited 30d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14930d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay30d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn231d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn230d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown30d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay30d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay30d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac30d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger30d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300030d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde30d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde30d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
