PS4 is HDMI only

Sony has revealed that the PS4 won't play on anything that isn't an HDTV, requiring HDMI.

I'm assuming same is true of Xbox One. It's the way of the future. Kind of like going Blu-ray or using the Cloud for online gaming purposes.

mrbojingles4759d ago

Yea Xbox One was confirmed last month as HDMI only too

douevenlift4759d ago

Really, every single tv made within the last few years has supported HDMI. Sorry luddites, time to upgrade that old piece of crap standard definition tv! You'll never regret it once you do!

TheBlackSmoke4759d ago

Why would you even buy a next gen console if you have an sd tv, whats the point?

darthv724759d ago

got all kinds of crap for being only hdmi and now that ps4 is hdmi only its okay....

Bottom line, you cant keep supporting the old connections forever. there has to be a point where you must let go of the past if you want to move forward.

BattleAxe4759d ago

Every single TV sold since around 2006 has supported HDMI, shouldn't be a problem.

Testfire4759d ago

"xbox one got all kinds of crap for being only hdmi and now that ps4 is hdmi only its okay.."

How many times do I have to read crap statements like this? Yes, we know some people are hypocrites, get over it. The world is round, we revolve around the sun and some people are hypocrites, welcome to Earth.

Dee_914759d ago

@ douevenlift
You can get full HD with component cables too..
I use component cables for my 360 because my tv only has 2 HDMI ports and those two are taken by my PS3 and cable box

Muerte24944759d ago

I have a SONY HX959 LED/LCD ready to plug it up to.

3-4-54759d ago

I've played this entire gen not using HD connections for xbox 360. Lost them early on/initially and never bothered to get new and games still look good.

I'm in for a nice upgrade this/next gen as I'll finally actually be gaming in HD.

Divine4759d ago

i think i see one more usb on the back.

SilentNegotiator4759d ago

What about people playing on monitors that don't have (or else they don't want to use) HDMI?

Wenis4759d ago

Im pretty sure there are cables you can by that are HDMI to VGA anyways

THE-COMMANDER4759d ago

@TheBlackSmoke:

LOL you are absolutely right!

RiPPn4759d ago

PS4 has optical out while the Xbone doesn't, which is important if you don't pass hdmi through your receiver, or your Tv doesn't have an optical out.

DeadlyFire4758d ago

Don't need a TV if you have a computer monitor. Just one of those sound cables floating on the net.

SilentNegotiator4758d ago

@wenis

Fair enough, but I've seen enough debates over what's the best cables/setup to know that a few people will still be disappointed and won't want to use a convertor.

gaffyh4758d ago

@darth - the only people I saw saying that we're people with older cable boxes complaining that the "live tv" features would be useless for them. And to be fair, that is a valid concern considering that is a major feature of the Xbone. Doesn't matter tome because I wouldn't use that feature even if I bought an Xbone.

ShabbaRanks4759d ago

2 USB ports only sucks tho. Wish it had at lest 4 :(

Double_O_Revan4759d ago

Honestly, did you ever really use all 4 on your phat PS3? I know I never did.

darthv724759d ago

it can support a usb hub for more ports.

FullmetalAlchemist4759d ago (Edited 4759d ago )

On the bright side at least they're usb 3.0

adorie4759d ago

@Darth
I think PS4 has USB 3.0, so it should be able to charge my phone and be used as a USB hub. :D

jonboi244759d ago

@azshorty2003 i used all for ports but only for rock band and well that franchise is pretty much dead

ShabbaRanks4759d ago

@azshorty2003 Yes I did on my phat.

1-for my Wireless headset jack
2-for my PSeye
3-for my USB amp for when I play with no headset
4-for charging my controllers and transfering stuff from my PS3 to Vita :(

fadeawayjae4759d ago

Is there a USB located in the back? I want to hook up my external but do not want a wire in front of the console at all times

darthv724759d ago (Edited 4759d ago )

I believe in the other thread about the images of the system, there is a USB port on the back. It shows hdmi, lan, optical audio and usb

ShwankyShpanky4759d ago

At least if you want the camera there's a plug on the back.

showtimefolks4759d ago

So buy a $400-500 system to play on SD TV maybe it's time to upgrade

ShwankyShpanky4759d ago

I've got an LCD in my van that doesn't have HDMI. My 720p HD projector doesn't have HDMI. Sometimes I use the SD cables just to hook up audio to an external sound system or headphones. I used composite cables to hook two PS3s up to one TV and play them both with split-screen PiP. Some people may not have a TV with HDMI if they're at a friend's/relatives, at a vacation spot, etc. I do actually get a fair amount of use out of the analog outputs, so I find their absence disappointing.

DeadlyFire4758d ago

Well a computer monitor is cheaper than some TVs and they make some cables that convert SD to HDMI and so on.

Although upgrades are required at some point.

zebramocha4759d ago

Can someone explain what this mean for the ps4 and does if effect me from playing ps4 games on a sd tv?

darthv724759d ago

you wont be aqble to unless you had a converter that took the hdmi and converted it down to component or even composite. I think they exist but usually you can find them the other way around.

There are more upconverters than there are downconverters.

KwietStorm_BLM4759d ago

@darth

Do you really think he just understood that? LOL

Parapraxis4759d ago (Edited 4759d ago )

Yup it does, looks like you better get out of the gaming hobby asap.

Parapraxis4759d ago

trolololo
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and bet that people commenting on article on N4(fucking)G.com don't have SDTV's

vlonjati77vlonjati4759d ago (Edited 4759d ago )

I thought ps4 has analog out unless ive been mistaken reading the specifications.I have HD tv anyway, just to comment something :)
Sorry, when I read the specification I got confused with the optical out.

time to upgrade your 1995 tv's people.

Akuma2K4759d ago

Agreed......i think were gonna see alot of big screen HDTV's sell like crazy this X-mas season.

LackTrue4K4759d ago

hope for good prices too!!!
i play on an Alien-Ware 19" monitor, i love it and all....but its best for game playing only.
sucks on movies... -_-

Xof4759d ago

Or spend $5 on an HDMI-to-component adapter.

M-M4759d ago

You mean the cable? You can't convert digital to analog over a cable. The converters that actually work cost about $30+.

FlyingFoxy4759d ago

Big HDTV's are pretty cheap these days anyway.

Smashbro294758d ago

The reduced quality and input lag you'd get from doing this is horrendous.

T24759d ago

Lol nice ... Too heavy to throw out lol

T24759d ago

Ya just got a new yamaha amp.. Running 4- 8" subs, 2 -6" drivers, 6 tweeters and a 10" powered sub ... 5 hdmi in should cover it lol ... Battlefield 4 here I come my gf will probably move out im banned from using heavy artillery lol

ShwankyShpanky4759d ago (Edited 4759d ago )

Isn't this kind of the same elitism that says "who the hell doesn't have internet to authenticate games?"

My living room TV and bedroom TV both have HDMI, but I actually get a lot of use out of the analog outputs on my PS3s for a number of different applications. I use component cables with my HD projector, as just *one* example... guess I've gotta get an HDMI/VGA converter now.

Oh well. Day 1 anyway.

friedricr4759d ago

Seriously.. if you can afford a HD gaming console .. you can afford an HDtv ...

a_bro4759d ago

Good. Makes developers focus on HD now.

The Great Melon4759d ago

True. Developers don't have to worry about the text being too small for certain players. I think Dead Rising was a game that had this issue when it was released.

Rainstorm814759d ago

Yeah Dead Risings text was unreadable in Standard Def

Parapraxis4759d ago

Good, fuck standard def.

ShwankyShpanky4759d ago

Analog outputs support HD via component, you know.

Gridloc4759d ago

That should be a given. Now will my Pulse headset work on ps4?

Brugal4759d ago

That's a great question which I'm also wondering about. Those headsets are great.

ShabbaRanks4759d ago

I hope so lol. If so I might give away mine to a friend and get the GTA5 ones :PPPP

Gridloc4759d ago

It looked like the 299 bundle with GTA V came with that headset. Lots of questions still need to answered, but they weren't shy on the big questions.

The_Devil_Hunter4759d ago

I just got one for Christmas I use it for everything, playing, listening to music, watching music, they're extremely incredible.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8555d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele54d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk54d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay54d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10155d ago (Edited 55d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit54d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg54d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10154d ago (Edited 54d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14955d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle67d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit67d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog68d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog68d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad68d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_68d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage68d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda67d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
