another update that mainly supports movie playback. Sony knows who its target audience is.

Get that movie stuff out first and then when you have some time maybe throw out a bit of gaming functionality. Nothing sorrier than a gamer being sold out to a movie watcher.

Now it looks like Poo-ray is at the same level as HD-DVD was when it launched what a shame.

I don't get it. Why is this important? It is adding a feature that, as of now, no discs take advantage of.

Not only can I not access important features which should be there to begin with, but it allows me to do all sorts of cool things with Blu-Ray discs that are not out yet.

OMG A FEATURE that i've been waiting for ever since i bought my PS3, Playing a DVD/BD for about 30 mins but then deciding neh i'll play cod4 now. Then going back to the same DVD/BD and it automatically playing at the same point i left it at. OMFG I LOVE YOU SONY !

I am happy...I just hit over 1015 folding@home work units...so i have stressed test this baby for over a year with no ill effects...The hardware is solid...and we will get ingame XMB and home soon...we just got to be patient....it will all happen...but Profile 2.0 was very important...the Xbox 360 only wished it could play back bluray movies....but it never will...

I still get excited about Firmware updates even when there aren't things that really impact me very much in them. I think this is due to the business model that MS has had with Windows (not a 360 attack, so chill). The type of mentality that the product is never finished. Deep down there is an excitement to know your product is atleast one step better. It's weird to think about how our PS2's NEVER had updates, although it is no where near the machine that our next gen machines are. Just my two bits.

And here I was just moseying over to my PC simply to restart TVersity so that I can stream an episode of Dexter to my comfy, bed-ridden PSP...and my browser homepage slaps me cold with THIS wicked news!

Think I'll go download instead. :D

Does anyone have an issue with their PS3 not immediately finding TVersity upon powering up? I find that I have to 'Restart Sharing' every time I turn the PS3 on; otherwise, I've got to wait for minutes before I can see the TVersity icon in my XMB.

I'm suspecting it's a router issue.

Any friendly advice???

I have been using ps3 to stream movie files from my hard drive and some files didn't load but after the update they now work awesome!

At least we can look forward to 2.40. Besides the BD copy to PSP, the only feature Sony has left to deliver which is THE most anticipated feature I'll never in gaming life forget, in-game XMB. Lol, can't wait.

Btw, they made a huge improvement on the internet browser.

I got so sick of seeing Special Edition DVD's come out only to see some "Extra Special" or "Classic" or "Director's Cut with extended scenes plus fourteen new endings minus the stupid censored crap from the rating association, etc ad nauseum".

With this, it sounds like folks who buy an earlier edition of a movie won't miss out on some of the interesting featurettes that future releases will see.

Why can't you xbox fanboys understand that the PS3 can be both a videogame system AND a blu-ray disk player, AT THE SAME TIME. The fact that they upgraded the blu-ray capabilities doesn't mean that the PS3 suddenly can't play games. It does both. A blu-ray upgrade is a GOOD thing. The fact that I can play COD4 and then watch a blu-ray movie is GOOD. The fact that xbox'ers can play COD4 and then watch an ancient, blurry, medieval DVD is NOT AS GOOD, its LESS. You get LESS for your money, when you can't go high-def people.

Where's my continuous video playback feature!? Another video centered update and it's still missing for some odd feature. Unlike the other stuff people are clamoring for, this one shouldn't have even taken this long so wth.

Took me all of about 3 minutes to download.

For some reason, the PS3 still can't load pages fast that use a lot of javascript.

I usually just leave javascript turned off, and that REALLY speeds the browsing up (to the equivalent of my PC that has dual-core processor and 3GB RAM), kind of like using firefox with noscript.

Anyways, any and all new features added to my PS3 make me only appreciate more and more the investment I made in purchasing it.

Oh, and even with javascript on, and off....I can't log into n4g with my PS3's browser....anyone else have that issue? I put in my username and password, and it just returns to the front page, and still has that "Join n4g" and "Log In" link.

That pisses me off....if I could log into n4g on my PS3 browser, then I'd have no reason to dual-boot linux =) , which I happen to be using on my PS3 as I type this.

I use Xubuntu (fast xfce interface, uses very little RAM, good for PS3).

I do not want updates. The PS3 is for playing games. Period!

I purchased a Sony PS3 to play video games. Now, every time I turn the PS3 on Sony is fixing their mistakes and wasting GAME PLAYERS time with constant updates. I do not want to spend my time downloading updates just because Sony did not properly setup their machines when they first shipped them. I have now had to spend 4 hours updating items that should never have been a problem in the first place. There have been 3 time wasting updates within 4 weeks.

Software and hardware manufactures have become so lazy that they are willing to jeopardize their good name by WASTING OUR TIME constantly updating their "broken" software. This is a mental illness now shared by a large percentage of the electronics industry. In Windows Vista, updates are constantly being forced on the consumer due to LAZY PROGRAMMERS in the corporate rush to sell more goods. I did not purchase a game machine to update the hardware every time I turn on the machine. A notice to all lazy companies, WE ARE NOT YOUR BETA TESTING GROUNDS!!! If you can not properly setup your hardware and software then do not sell your products. Customers have purchased these game machines to enjoy them, to play games, to have a fun with a group of friends. How can I have friends over to enjoy an evening of games when as soon as I turn on the machine the first thiNg it does is WHINE AT ME TO DOWNLOAD A POINTLESS UPDATE. Now a group of us can all sit around for 2 hours waiting for your company to update my machine. This is a GAME MACHINE!!!!!! It is for playing games. To all electronics manufacturers: It is no fun updating your screw ups with your constant updates. Do not waste out time anymore. Get your products right or do not sell them. Period.

I will simply sell the PS3 on ebay, and tell anyone I can that it simply wastes your time constantly updating the software. I will recommend to all people I know that you should buy a Wii so you do not have to waste your entire evening updating the PS3 every other time you switch it on. NO MORE FORCED UPDATES SONY!!!

Anyone consider the fact that there might be MORE to this "in-game XMB" for Sony. Maybe they want to surpass Xbox Live in one single bound. Maybe?

I've got to admit that i was very sceptical as to what Sony was promising with the PS3 but i'm very much a fan of the machine now, i'm a very big movie fan and delighted that the PS3 will be a top spec Blu-Ray player, that is constantly updated to include new features.

From what I have seen so far it works out great. I do not have any new BD's so I can't test out a couple features but everything else works great.

The ps3 is not just a gaming console but a media device this is a war of your living room it lways has been the media device who gets control of your living room will be the ultimate winner and as a media device the ps3 is at the moment hands down the winner.

My movie files do not work anymore.

As soon as I got the update, my movies keep on saying "network error", everything else seem to work(music,photos) except for the movies :(

Shure this update is great but when are sony going to release an update that enables the ps3 to either decode or send a uncoded dts-hd stream to a home theater receiver? Most of the blu-ray movies that are being released now use that codec so at least i think that's kinda inportant and i would be really happy if they enabled me to get the most out of my blu-ray movies while using the ps3...

They are currently developing more AAA titles, we will see more later this year.. they are ramping up right now!!! if you dont believe me, just wait!

this is a poo update, but it is helping their install base. Plus how can you complain about added functionality?! so its going to extend the potential of my movie watching, while im not playing one of the amazing PS3 games already out... sounds like a win to me.

I also cant wait till the PSN updates are "better", but they will be... VERY soon..

is using the PSP as a remote to play music files on my PS3. Cool. no longer have to turn on my TV to view an play my mp3's on my PS3. Saves the hassle and power.

I do like it that you can play files larger than 2gb. Now to add in backwards comp with older divx versions would be really nice. Be interesting to see what the spring update for 360 has to offer.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
