I honestly didn't realize the PS3 "SUXASSES" used MP3 player tech. They should've done like MS, and given you the option to just use standard batteries, or buy your own rechargable ones. I already had my Energizer charger, and about a dozen batteries, for my various remotes, digital camera, etc. I never have to worry about needing to exchange my controller.

I notice she didn't say they will be providing a FREE exchange service. and if they do, it will be another way for sony to lose money.

I guess waiting for 3rd party controllers will be the best bet.

And even if it was free, Sony's again looking at footing a big bill. Massive battery recalls are still starting up seemingly every week, a hugely expensive console sold at a big loss is about to launch, profit forecasts for the next year have already been announced 38% lower than expected (see yesterday's news)....

This makes a massive "WTF" factor. Sony really can't afford to plan for a massive wave of controller replacements at this juncture, and all they would have had to do was make the battery replacable.

Unless they made a deal to lock in the battery in exchange for reduced cost (a standard "proprietary hardware" kind of deal)... hhmmm...

First you guys complained about the battery not being replaceable and the whole "Sony's ripping us off" conspiracy.

Now that Sony's saying that they'll replace faulty controllers for free you're still complaining? It's not going to be a massive wave of controllers coming in; you people act like 50% of the controllers are going to be faulty.

Come on now. It's a controller, it's wireless, and you don't need to buy anything extra for it. Meaning you don't need to buy batteries, you don't need to buy a lithum rechargable, and you don't need to buy a recharge station. Oh my goodness that sounds like they covered thier bases!
I did the 360 rechargable battery crap for a month and finally found out how crazy I was for putting up with that crap. Why have 6-8 batteries laying around waiting to be used when you can just have one thing. To many accessories become a bad thing.

Swapping rechargable batteries on a 360 is way better than being tethered to your ps3 waiting for your controller to recharge. Once you go wireless it's hard to go back even to wait for a recharge. A 360 rechargable battery is only $12. Where do they get $50 for ps3 replacement battery?

Will Sony put this in writing? Do I have to keep my recipe and register each control I buy? Do I have to pay shipping and handling? How long do people have to wait for the controller since people do need a controller to play? Do people will actually wait 1-2 week for Sony to replace their control or simply go buy another one? .... right I see this happening. I mean... seriously how hard it was to make them removable? Are there any technical reason similar to blue-ray? example, batteries last 100% longer if they are not removable? or some bull like that.... To me it sounds like one of those mail rebate that most people never do, in order to sell more controllers. How many people will actually bother going to the anoyance of calling sony, shipping the controller (paying for shipping) wait 1-2 weeks. Nice way or increasing the attach rate on accesories.

I personally HATED having to do the plug and play while my 360 controller charged up. I much prefer the battery swap to being attached to the box while playing. But that could just be me. Atleast Sony got it right in giving it a rechargable battery.

Does anyone remember how long a play time they said you'll get out of a single charge? I think it was something around 30 hours, but then again, this is pulling from memory here. Not having the rumble (sadly) will undoubtedly extend the battery life of the controller. Just hook it back in every day or two after playing, and you should be fine, I think.

They said that one full charge is 30 hours of wireless gameplay. Anyone who games for more than 30 hours nonstop, well you need to get a life. Also, based on how they are offering to replace any controllers where the battery dies, I'd say they won't die for a while, otherwise Sony would just lose money on controllers (the one part of the console you know they're making a nice profit on). They probably feel like the batteries will last longer than the controller itself.

mmmm. i wonder how much their refurbishment 'service' will be for millions of pads.

nice scam. put a limited shelf life into your products, then tell the customer you are being nice by offering to replace the dead product when they finally get screwed. and they can pay for the privilage. aren't sony great?

I think that he makes a great point. And by the time the PS3 battery does decay, the price of the controller may no longer be $50. And if it is still $50, it's safe to assume that the replacement service will not cost $50 since people could always just buy a new one instead of getting it replaced.

it disappoints me everytime i see most xbox gamers whining ,complaining,bickering,dissing ,being graphics whores and attacking EVERYTHING sony does.once they act(sony) to fix a problem,they still complain.or find something else to complain about when they have no intention of buy the ps3.the same happens with some sony fans,but this site is full of xbox FANBOYS.you don't have to BUY anything for your controller.you can still use the cord.if it dies,sony replaces it.but there are still retards complaining.it's pathetic.maybe that's why some people don't ever join the club of gaming on consoles.it's full of children who won't grow up.

Like I said in a previous post. If sony wanted to "fix" the problem, they'd of announced that they will begin making new controllers where you can now replace the battery, that would of been "fixing" the problem, instead of masking it, and environmentaly friendly. Sony, "fixed" nothing by this, making future controllers battery replacable would of been the "FIX".

Why is it that it seems most "EVERYTHING" that sony does or even touches is pure BS. From a so cvalled spring release then europe's delayed til 07, the the cell and rsx poor yields to insufficient memory making poor looking game play, BS w/the Blu ray drives, all the overheating issues, bottlenecking issues, the so called online service BS and lies, then the price. There's more to this list as well, don't get me started.

because you're acting as if everything is already set in stone. If that were the case, then just as how Microsoft never promised to reimburse consumers many months after their issues with hardware, it never would have happened, because they didnt say so in the first place.

How do you know Sony won't change something in the future? Remember the original Dual Shock for the PS1? Sony never announced prior to PS1s launch that they would release a controller with haptic tech and dual analogs now did they, but it happened, right? I rest my case.
