A well thought out design with ease of development a huge focus that will really reap huge dividends as far as software support goes, as long as online remains free with no DRM then I will certainly be buying one.

I hope they will shift for UE4 on PS4. Not any number 3 on PS4.

The PS4 is designed by a successful western and japanese game s designer/programmer/console hardware expert and consultant/industry veteran/ arcade game creator at 16 years old who knows how to make hit games/Naughty Dog collaborator/author of the Cerny method of game production....etc etc

I say $399 - $449, as proven by other members AMD 7000 series GPU PC's are getting cheaper when only considering parts needed to run the PC, and the PS4 fits that mold.

For $550 - $600 consumer cost you can build a PC similar to the PS4. And since Sony's literally buying million of these parts they should be getting anywhere from 20% - 50% off retail prices.

a $600 pc with similar parts to ps4? i don't think that is possible unless you buy a really cheap CPU like a core i3 or amd bulldozer Fx-series but if you do that you will bottle-neck the performance of the video card. the pc version of the HD7850 that is likely to power the ps4 as far as i am aware is the best value video card in terms of price/performance but it will still take a large chunk or your budget around $180. add to that the increasing price of RAM for pc's because most of it is being used in other industries i just don't see it happening. you will also have to skimp out on other parts like getting a cheap case and a cheap psu you will probably end up with a bad machine. close to $1000-$900 i would say *including extra costs like mouse+keyboard oh and the worst part is? that is without OS windows 7 is like another $117 assuming you are doing everything legit

We proved in a previous thread that it's possibly to build a PC that's on par with the PS4 for slightly above $600.

All shopping must be done online with sites like Newegg and TigerDirect, but it's possible.

Specs were:

Intel Core i5 CPU
HD 7870 GHz GPU
8GB DDR3 RAM
1TB HDD
Motherboard
PC case
Power Supply
Cooling for CPU

All came up to around $650. A cheaper Motherboard, Case, Power Supply, and cooling could lower the price, but the range was $550 - $650 if you know how to buil it yourself.

If you're paying $900 - $1,000 then you're getting screwed over or buying the PC pre-built.

It's a console, not a cure for cancer. The Xbox one, just like all other Xbox's is just as easy to develop for. The reason these guys are all coming out and saying this is because they have not been used to this ease of use when it comes to the play station brand because Sony always made things so difficult.

Well Sony making things difficult has only been for one generation, the ps2 and ps1 were developer friendly, so no sony has not always made things difficult. Ps4 will be better to develop for though, not only because of the way it is structured, but also because it gives devs access to a good bit more ram than the xbox one.

yeah, depending on how they FINALLY decide to divvy up that ram it should for sure. And I totally agree they definitely made things easier this time around, especially for porting to/from p.c games - hopefully their ports will be much better represented this gen.

The arguments between the two systems really is silly though. I bet there are people well into their late teens and older on here arguing like 8 year old kids on a playground - pretty sad when you look back at it.

A consoles a console. They will both be pretty similar but with their own uniqueness that makes them an Xbox or a play station. seeing daily rants slamming each one is just nuts.

@VaporCell yeah I know, but as they said, that's just temporary and the Xbox one will catch up because they are very good in that area.

The dev kits they had for the 360 were raved about also, the software tools etc.

Definitely going to be a back and fourth thing throughout this generations life span.

Will be waiting for which retail store brings out the best deal on offer for PS4 before putting my money down.

I'm quite certain a couple of shops out there are going to go bonkers just to bring in customers.

Great to hear/read about a lot of positive vibes from game devs about PS4.

One of the more enjoyable F2P games out there, good level of content and great presentation. I'm sure like any other you get to a point where micro transactions become a necessity to progress without pulling your hair out.

im not bashing it, im just curious. will devs be able to squeeze as much out of it as they possibly can now that they wont be struggling with programming from the start.

Not that quickly. Use xbox 360 games as a barometer gen start to now. Good start from gears 1 but never made a massive jump by gen end. No discredit to gears though. When I first saw that game in motion I knew I'd arrived in the 'next gen'....I was oresmacked. Games improved but that had a lot to do with talent. I believe naughty god, santa monica et el would do very well on the 360 compared to the devs they currently have at their disposal

That is a really good Question, And one Mark Cerny went over with in this interview.

"Many of the teams take about five years to develop a game. As a result, they need a stable specification during that period and that is what a console provides, ie about one hundred million devices that share the same basic specification.

The console also tends to have higher performance than would be expected by the cost due to a lightweight operating system and the fact that developers enjoy many years to study the specific architecture. Regarding the performance issue in the context of Moore’s Law, our strategy has been to create a console with a number of features for the short term and others for the long term. We have a family basic feature set that allows a wide range of games at launch, and we’ve done a great job of matching the GPU that we believe will allow the system to grow over the years.

To give just one example, we have adapted the ‘hardware’ to allow the ‘shaders’ computing are used in traditional graphics interface. This is the kind of technique that we believe will be used within three or four years of the life cycle of the console to increase the graphical quality of the games. -Cerny"

Not necessary the console, but the gaming dev engines might be maxed out in a matter of months to a year.. Remember even Kojima Productions' "Fox engine" looks next gen but is aimed for 360 and PS3.. So its all upto what the engine can do when the consoles eventually release

I will pre order a ps4. I just hope that the third party developers treat Sony with priority so we never get a shit version of there game. I don't want to play a bad version of call of duty ever again on a playstation.

Oh and for some odd reason the PS4 is getting a ton of FTP games.

1. Warframe
2. Planet Side 2 (SCE said they had a FTP game for the PS4 and this will probably be it)
3. Black Light Retribution
4. War Thunder

Mark Cerny is a genius. The Ps4 is powerfull and easy for develop games, not only big companies could launch games at the new system, too small companies can easily port theirs PC versions at PS4 and most of these games are Free to play. The PS4 also doesnt requires DRM's stupid restrictions and can be played offline, only waiting for the price.

Up to now, despite the more powerful CPU/GPU of modern PCs, the best crafted and optimised games have been on consoles. Its easier to max a system when you know its specific hardware.

But a strange thing may happen with the PS4 being such a gaming beast and adopting a PC-like architecture.

We may get more PC developed games. And even more new PC games actually being ported to the PS4. With Sony's developer focus we may get an exciting explosion of games from all areas.

I sense a new-found friendship between game developers on all platforms emerging.

Of course it is, they ditched the cell cpu. Also a lot of the reason why we see a $399 price (8 years later mind you, even slightly cheaper with inflation), instead of a $599 price. ftw!
