Will Wii U Be Nintendo’s Last Console?

The Diplomat: ''With only 3.1 million units sold since its release for the 2012 holiday shopping season, the Wii U has been unable to capture much interest from either consumers or developers. Last month’s announcement by gaming software giant Electronic Arts, stating that they had no titles in development for the Wii U, was a major blow to the console’s staying power.''

if it is then i'm happy to keep buying hd mario and zelda games without having to upgrade. just keep releasing game after game, and bring all games to the virtual console and i won't need a new system. but we all know its not their last system. about 6 years from now you will see doom to nintendo _____ system as soon as its released

JonahNL4740d ago (Edited 4740d ago )

Nintendo is learning from its mistakes of the past years. I'm pretty confident that Nintendo will do just fine in the next generation. There was doom written all over the 3DS and look at that handheld now - it's leading with over 30 million sold.

Nintendo is unveiling the new 3D Mario, Super Smash Bros. and Zelda during E3. Besides that, we also have Retro's new IP and probably a lot more games coming up for the Wii U.

Don't get me wrong, the console isn't exactly going to beat the PS4, but it will sure as hell make a nice comeback. Especially with Ninty considering a price cut and a second ambassador program.

weekev154740d ago

I agree with you. 1 thing I would say though is that I think people should redefine what it means to win a generation. Eg PS3 is gonna just beat 360 this gen in terms of sales but has it been successful? Hell no, it has cost Sony a fortune. Has it got the best games of this gen? Id say yes but if it hasnt made Sony money its a luxury they cant afford.

It looks like theh have learned their lesson in ditching the cell thougj.

As far as Nintendo goes WiiU is profitable after 1 game purchase so will Nintendo make money off of WiiU? Yes they will. Will it be Nintendos last console? Only if Nintendo decide they don't like moneg any more. It's a well known fact that Nintendo design their console around their games and not he other way round. Sony make it easy tomake games for their console. Sounds like a tiny difference but the point is that the devs making Zelda said "it'd be cool if we coild do this..." so Nintendo put it in the console.

Nintendo has been working on Wii U's successor for about 6 months now.

That is how they do things.

They don't settle...they don't wait...they get right to work on how to improve everything they have, and I love them for that.

They may not always get a hit, but they are progressing gaming weather or not people realize it.

Wii U isn't for great graphics. It's for good graphics and great gameplay.

1upgamer994740d ago (Edited 4740d ago )

Uh, where are the "is this Microsofts last console" articles? I mean really??? By the way is Nextbox even a GAME console because it looks an awful lot like a PC!

Blackdeath_6634740d ago (Edited 4740d ago )

the difference is the WiiU has already been Released and despite having alot of hype from the media didn't do too well sales wise whereas the xbone has yet to be released, has yet to even have many of its details confirmed amidst contradicting reports and isn't exactly having the best exposure at the moment. i do agree though silly article nintendo are more than capable of releasing good console they just need to rethink the way they do things. as for the xbox i'm starting to wonder if MS is even trying anymore they are clearly seeking out a new audience.

Garbanjo0014740d ago

I'm switching to PS4 this go round, they have my money waiting. Xbox isn't entirely screwed, and about the MS makes a PC remark, two things:

a) What did you expect from a computer company?

and b) I believe that PS4 is going to be very similar in design and playability. This go round, I'm getting the PS4 because frankly, i'm just tired of xbox's bullshit.

1upgamer994739d ago

I agree with you on the PS4, but I had to get my Wii U too. I like the 1st party games, but even me being a huge fanboy realize that I am going to have to pick up a PS4 for different ports. Sony though in the past 3 to 4 years has really come along way in terms of 1st party games :) So It is a win win for me. I have only had my PS3 for about 3 years, but plan on a PS4 ASAP.

bass4g4740d ago

The thing is it's actually more possible that it's more likely to happen to xbox1/ps4. Sony's in masses of debt and if the ps4 tanks it could put the company under. If the xbox1 tanks microsoft will simply move on to multimedia stuff. Nintendo HAS to keep making consoles they don't want to do what sega did (since going software only sega has lost pretty much all it's relevance) and they can. Isn't the figure something like 100million of losses for 40 years for them to go bankrupt. I thought we were over this kind of ridiculousness.

LOL_WUT4740d ago

I would have to say yes if Nintendo continues to have very low sales throughout the rest of the year. ;)

1upgamer994739d ago

I don't think almost 4 million is that bad, and I know when some killer AAA 1st party games come out sales will increase. The reason I made the Nintendo comment is because, it is soooo REDUNDANT. Over and over and over again with doom an gloom for Nintendo. Lets face it Nintendo owns the handheld market and makes a TON of money on DS/3DS systems and software, so Nintendo is not going anywhere anytime soon. Why do these fanboy articles have to bash Nintendo OVER AND OVER again. Wait for SMASH BROS, 3D Mario, Zelda HD, Retros new game, all come out , am sure that sales will jump then.

That number keeps getting lower and lower evertime someone posts about it. Wii U is well over 4Million at this time. Just Utter B.S.

Captain Qwark 94740d ago

the number may not be super accurate but there is no denying its selling terribly. you can argue all you want, thats just a fact. its being outsold monthly in the states ( the biggest console market ) by 7-8 year old consoles. thats a big deal

is it all doom and gloom and will nintendo pull out over it, prob not. im sure this is just for hits but again, its no doing well no matter how you want to spin it

yugovega4740d ago

i'm sure ps3 and xb360 will outsell ps4 and xbone this christmas. that doesn't prove any system is failing. dvd's outsold blurays since bluray was released but bluray didn't fail.

Captain Qwark 94740d ago

maybe they will, maybe they wont. what i can nearly guarantee though is you wont be seeing months with them selling less than 50,000 units. its just not going to happen.

bass4g4740d ago

@captain qwark 9 how do you know the ps4 and xbox1 won't be even worse. What's happening with the wiiu might just be a trend in console games. Anecdotally I know that most of my friends who aren't that into gaming (they play some games and own consoles but aren't active) don't care about the next gen. Remember the wiiu got record preorders too and it sold really well for the first 3 months (not as well as the wii but better than the ps3/360 combined). A similar thing happened with the 3ds. People buy nintendo consoles when there's nintendo games out and there are very little nintendo games that have been released it's simple.

despair4740d ago

The Wii U is in a bad place right now but I do expect it to recover by end of the year, on the other hand the 3DS is in an insanely good position which will bolster Nintendo's bottomline.

I have no interest in buying the WiiU but these doom and gloom articles are getting tiresome, Nintendo will continue to make new hardware and new consoles, this is probably just a temporary bump in the road.

jcnba284740d ago

These articles are getting old.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

AuraAbjure78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer80d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot79d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno79d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay79d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno78d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK78d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
