The Worst Game I've Ever Played (Third Edition): Max Payne 3

So Den of Geek has been posing the question in their new editorial series: what’s the worst video game that you’ve ever played? John Saavedra picked Assassin's Creed 3, and Daniel Hill picked Shadow Ops: Red Mercury. Now, Joe Jasko has submitted his pick for the worst game he's ever played: Max Payne 3.

What the heck is this? Max Payne 3 was fantastic... This guy must not have played a lot of games.

Mr_Nuts4748d ago (Edited 4748d ago )

I'm not fully agreeing with him, it was a good game but as a Max Payne game it failed completely. Everything which made the past two Max Payne games good were gone in this one.

Plus I felt like they went backwards with Max's character development, in MP2 by the end Mona helped Max move away from his grief, in Max Payne 3 he's even worse then he was in Max Payne. Lets not forget they went with the ending where Mona dies.

I kind of hope they do a new game where they go from the dead on arrival ending, like an alternative take if Mona was alive and what his life would be like.

So yeah I'm not saying it was bad, it just ended up being a typical third person shooter. Oh and for me, those annoying flashes and distorts on the screen every 10 seconds were very annoying.

EDIT

Guys disagree as you want but if you've actually played the old Max Payne games you can not argue with me that they are the same. I know it's Rockstar...we can't criticize anything Rockstar makes ¬¬

gaffyh4748d ago

It's not the worst game ever, but it is DEFINITELY the worst Max Payne game. The first game was incredible, GREAT story, innovative gameplay, unique levels. MP3 was basically just, go in a room, kill all the dudes, go in the next room. So in that sense it is just your average, albeit big budget, third person shooter.

@Mr_Nuts - I definitely agree with that last bit of your comment. Just goes to show that there are a lot of very young gamers on N4G that probably didn't have the chance to play Max Payne 1 and 2.

Hufandpuf4748d ago

I agree. MP3 was not memorable and the multiplayer failed hard. It's not a bad game at all, but it is the worst Max Payne game.

rocky0475864748d ago

I can argue with you that it's the same. Remedy felt that Rockstar lived up to their expectations and knew what a Max Payne game was all about too. You're not the only one to have played Max Payne 1, 2, and 3 you know? I have too, and I can argue that Max Payne's character development was exactly where it should be in this game, he's a mess and he always has been.

Especially since Mona is dead, the one person in his life, like you said, that helped him "beat" his grief. Well after almost 15 years don't you think he'll still be a miserable bastard after Mona has died? So I don't get your statement about how he's not supposed to be worse than in Max Payne when Mona is DEAD! I feel that the writing and the tone of the story and the characters were right in tune with a Max Payne adventure.

Mr_Nuts4748d ago (Edited 4748d ago )

@rocky047586

Ha, so your argument is that Remedy said Rockstar lived up the franchise.

So?

It's not like Remedy is going to say they did a crap job, I mean it's Rockstar, they are higher up more respected developer then Remedy, bad mouthing them would tarnish the Max Payne franchise and would make them look bad because they bad mouthed a higher up developer.

Come on...

Oh and as for the Mona thing, the whole point is that she helped him move on with his grief, just because she died it dosen't mean he's going to go down even deeper, the point was that she made him see past death and see that theres more to life, giving him a new view on the world. If he loved her, which he did, he would of stayed true to what she taught him and looked a head to bright future....not turn his back on her and disrespect everything she said when she was alive.

They should of kept her alive, made it so she left him but on good terms since they are differnt people, he would still be in the police force and you could have the story that was used in the flashback levels about him killing one of the mobs son, maybe in a raid and it would make a story for the full game where he has to take out the mob before they take him out. New York, Mona, Max looking like himself, a love/noire theme, it would of been fantastic.

Harpers_Ferry4748d ago

I won't claim to know what sort of life you have led, but as someone who has lost his significant other and (unborn) child due to the actions of others, I can tell you that sort of grief is not something you simply "move on" from. You carry it with you, it is just as easy to fall back into as any vice, and it's always easier to lose that new lease on life than it was to gain it.

Godlovesgamers4748d ago

I completely agree with your sentiment here. Having been a Gamestop employee at the time that this game was available for preorder, well I had it preordered as I have always been a fan of the Max Payne series. Sadly I even preordered the super-duper edition with the MP statue, etc...

I played through the entire first Max Payne game and then went into this one immediately and anyone else who has played the first two MP games will attest to everything you've said.

Essentially this isn't a "Max Payne Game", it's a game with Max Payne in it. As a "Max Payne Game" this game fails so miserably that anyone expecting what we've come to know as a MP experience will be sorely disappointed because as you mentioned, everything that made those games great, with the exception of Bullet Time, is completely stripped from this game.

Other things I couldn't stand about this game is the uber unrealistic Hollywood action set pieces (shooting incoming rps out of the air while hanging from a helicopter skid!!???) and the completely unbalanced difficulty.

The only reason you're getting Disagrees is because they are coming from younger gamers that never played through the first two Max Payne titles, ie; ignorance.

Mr_Nuts4748d ago

@Harpers_Ferry

Really...your bringing up realism with a video game. Come on, your grief might be differnt to another persons, people have differnt ways of handling it.

Anyway, since this a video game and Mona over the course of the entire MP2 game helped him see a life beyond his "pain" yeah it's their story they could of made him go with anything they wanted yet they chose to backtack

The point of this is that the all one who should of continued Max Payne is remedy, it's their game, their story, their characters. Rockstar made this game feel like a new IP at times, hell I wouldn't be surprised if it was a new IP before they turned it into Max Payne which is why it's set it Brazil, one of the last places on earth you would set Max Payne.

Harpers_Ferry4748d ago

@Mr_Nuts

Of course. If we're going to go into matters of grief, overcoming grief, and the role of another human being as a method for fighting said grief, we might as well go all in.

You'll get no arguments from me that MP3 is the worst in the series, but that's because it's a damn good series. Could the new game have been a more "purely Max Payne" game? Sure, but chances are we'd be sitting here talking about how it was more of the same, but somehow different. Then again, I would wager your obvious disdain for Rockstar and love for Remedy goes beyond this series, so I suppose it's a senseless argument.

adorie4748d ago

I agree with you, Mr_Nuts. You've said what was on my mind, pretty much. Have a bubble.

@Snookies
Ageed!

I thought it was a great game from start to finish.

RonRico4748d ago

Me too. The campaign was very well done and the voice acting, music and graphics were all well above average.

GuyThatPlaysGames4748d ago

This guy is just looking for hits! Move on, nothing to see here..

Reibooi4748d ago

I liked the game quite a bit but I do know what people mean when they say they don't like it. I mean the only levels that truly feel like Max Payne are the flash back ones.

That said the game was fantastic. It wasen't what I expected going in(I kinda blocked myself off from media for the game so I knew it was gonna be Brazil alot but aside from that I knew nothing) but it was just as awesome as I was hoping just in a different way. I kinda like that R* took a different approach and kinda opened up the world. It makes future games if they happen so much more open ended on where they can go.

But yeah guy must be a blind fan boy or just never played it to think it's the worse game he has ever played.

yesmynameissumo4748d ago

What Snookies12 said. MP3 was fantastic. I loved the cemetery level.

Baba19064748d ago

I got 80% trophy completion on Ragnarok but left a few of the battles. Will come back to it one day.

Miraak82 1067d ago

Dragon Quest 11 is my top pick

RpgSama1067d ago

Dragon Quest XI was such an AMAZING game, I had a blast from the very beginning all the way to the very end, it actually got better the more you played, full of surprises as well.

Another game that I enjoyed from the very beginning all the way to the end of the 100% completion was Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Really, really, really fun game with a great heartfelt story.

badz1491067d ago (Edited 1067d ago )

Where is Horizon Zero Dawn?? where is Ghost of Tsushima?? I just got my Platinum on HZD and is now trying to finish the Frozen Wild expansion. so much care and love went into that game and it really shows. I especially adore the lore and have sunk many hours listening to the logs and reading journals. the back story is great and the gameplay is awesome. can't wait to replay on the hardest difficulty on NG+. next in my list would be to finish GoTsushima

Tacoboto1067d ago

Ghost was fantastic especially after Iki Island and the PS5 upgrade. 100%'d that, Horizon Forbidden West (not ZD), GoW (not yet Ragnarok), Spider-Man, and R&C: Rift Apart.

Each one absolutely worth it.

Aloymetal1067d ago (Edited 1067d ago )

100% I would like to add to you list RDR2, amazing as well and the perks from getting the Legend Of The East outfit is awesome.
Sekiro as well, have to play twice to get it but it's worth it!

Demetrius1067d ago

I agree I'm on my 2nd playthroughs of both horizon forbidden West(zero dawn I played also) ghost of Tsushima except I'm replaying it on PS5 this time, the iki island expansion is amazing

ClayRules20121067d ago

Yeah, GoT was already an AMAZING game on PS4, but playing it on PS5, along with that expansion, just even better.

Elda1067d ago

I just started my copy of GOW:R, enjoying it so far.

DefenderOfDoom21067d ago (Edited 1067d ago )

Okay the title of article should be top 10 , 3rd person games to complete 100 percent. Nine 3rd person games and 1 racing game on this list .
