PS4 'Will Be A Great Platform For MMOs'

Sony Online Entertainment praises the PS4 for its ability to play MMOs.

Sony Online Entertainment has previously teased that it could be bringing one of its free-to-play MMOs to PS4.

In a recent interview with NowGamer, SOE's executive producer Larry Liberty has suggested that the PS4 will be a "great platform" for its MMOs.

"I would expect that with all of the amazing features that have been announced for the next PlayStation," said Liberty, "that [the PS4] will be a great platform for MMOs."

Previously SOE's John Smedley has discussed the possibility of a PS4, and how free-to-play business models will work "awesomely" on consoles.

I don't see why not.

Planetside 2 as a F2P MMO on PS4 would be epic....as long as I can import my profile to the PS4 version and use the sniper I actually paid money for!

it would be a big one if announced at E3. i bought my PC with planetside2 in mind so if it works flawlessly on ps4 i might not have to buy a graphics card just yet

didn't they say the same thing about the ps3 and we only got dc universe? seems we get one mmo a generation. ff11 then dc. hoping they actually come thru this time and release some good ones.

The problem with the ps3 & 360 were the lack of memory. They can work on both consoles but with not much memory to work with dc universe had loading times & lag. I loved it despite all the issues it had but I think with the ps4 the transition from pc to ps4/xbone will be easier & should be enough to run mmo's at a way smoother rate then they would with current hardware.

They did bring over Free Realms as well.

But I get your point.

And you can't include FF11 because that's Square Enix's game, not Sony. But you can include Everquest Online Adventures in the PS2 era instead

Planetside and DC Universe are Sony games, they'd never be on XBO. Everquest is Sony to.

Free Realms wasn't cross platform...wish it was I bought a Lifetime subscription on the PC.

Sony already has an arsenal of MMO games on the PC and with the PS4 architecture being similar to the PC it shouldn't be no problem to bring them to PS4.

I want to know if my Final Fantasy 14 a realm reborn will be able to transfer over on a digital code.

Also want Phantasy star online 2 for ps4.

mmo's with a controller? possible for sure, but I prefer a keyb + mouse for such games.

(just gonna say I'm not disagreeing with your preference... just stating this for those who think the controller isn't capable)

With modifier controls (holding a button... for example L2) and hitting another button you can greatly increase the possible inputs from a controller. With only 1 modifier key the DS4 could go from 9 to 19 possible inputs (not including D pad and touch) if you include the D pad that goes from 13 to 23 inputs... that's just with ONE modifier in the control scheme.

It's still very doable with the MMO control schemes but current MMO interfaces are a bit outdated with that whole hotbar command setup and I really wish someone would take a risk and innovate here.

I think an MMO shouldn't be such a detached experience. I want complete control over my character and I want more customization especially with MMORPGs... most MMORPGs barely feel like an RPG and that's just sad as there is plenty of untapped potential in that genre...

the modifier controls you mention I know (worked very well on Sacred 2 e.g.) but I feel that type of control works best for action based games (Like Sacred 2 or Diablo 3).
I play Neverwinter D&D (on PC) at the moment. It would basicly be as playable with a controller as it is with Keyb+mouse like now.
Playing an mmo like wow would suck as hell with a controller.
Off course, developers who release an mmo-type game would keep in mind that we use a controller no doubt ;)

Oh of course, (most) current MMOs are designed around the keyboard and mouse. I just hope developers design games around the hardware interface that players will be using rather than trying to force a controller to work with their games.

Strange analogy incoming but its like a football coach putting his players in position to succeed by working off their strengths instead of forcing them to fit a specific scheme.

You can easily do mmos on consoles I can see games like guild wars working on a controller there's plenty buttons for hotkeys.would love to see planetside 2 on ps4 at launch that might actually sway me from getting a x1 first.would also love eve online.

There´s tons of talent behind Mark media´s upcoming iOS Kung Fu fighting episodic adventure game “Shuyan the Kung Fu Princess”. People that has worked on titles such as “Star Wars: The Old Republic“, “Mass Effect”, “Batman: Arkham Asylum” and ”Dragon Age: Origins”.

So the hype is on for sure. But will the game live up to all the hype?
