A Learning Journey

Quote: "If there is one thing I admire about gaming as an entertainment and escapism medium, except for pretty much everything else I adore to the very bone marrow, (not including Duke Nukem Forever; believe me I tried to like it) is the way it can teach you without teaching you.

I appreciate that is like saying a calculator without numbers on its buttons is much more effective at aiding you in the fiery pits of calculus, but what I’m trying to get at is the way a game can teach you its ways and tell you where to go without placing you in a tutorial-only environment or the use of an objective marker."

Good article. Journey was a great experience. Need more games like it.

I literally only JUST today figured out what Journey actually was.
Journey is "The Hero's Journey" Monomyth represented as a videogame, making the player the protagonist.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
http://www.amazon.com/Journ...

Notice the soundtrack is literally named after the stages of The Hero's Journey.
It was a clever idea but really when you think about it, anyone who knew about The Hero's Journey and was a videogame designer could just have easily come up with the idea to present it as a game.

There will be other unique games yeah, but there will never be another like Journey and frankly, there really shouldn't be. The idea of The Hero's Journey as a videogame has been done. IF anyone tries to do it again, it will be wayyyyy too similar to Journey and as a result will be written off as a clone and lose the very thing which made Journey great.

It is up to the industry to keep innovating, but Journey CAN be used as a guideline for decent storytelling.
