PS4 Vs Xbox One Console Reveal Breakdown

Gaming Blend "First impressions of a home entertainment console can make or break first-adopter perception: Will I buy this console day one? Will I pre-order it before I know enough about it? Are the prospects in line of what I want out of a media entertainment device? Well, we look at these and more in this brief breakdown between Sony's reveal of the PlayStation 4 from back in February and Microsoft's unveil of the Xbox One."

As a PC gamer I see the PS4 with the advantage, not with just the specs but their programming tools for this playstation and the support it will get, I prefer the xbox one controller but spec whise and on the games I would buy the ps4, most of the games microsoft showed were actually thrird party titles which will release on the ps4 as well but with extra content

BadboyCivic4748d ago

PS4 has the specs, but Xbox has the apps!

shoddy4748d ago

What apps?
netflix?
hulu?
gametrailer apps?

Ps4 have no less

nosferatuzodd4748d ago (Edited 4748d ago )

was about game design, games from AAA developers and games from indie developers; Sony made it clear that they were out to win over gamers and from start to finish they centered everything – including social integration – around the gaming experience. They then quickly followed this up by announcing fee waivers and a stripped down certification process to allow more games, more games and even more games to appear on the PS4. Sony was all about open arms toward the gaming community, including both gamer and developers. It was truly a teary-eyed moment for gamers as it felt like a big company was going out of their way to be both development friendly and consumer friendly.

SEE this is why i will never turn my back on Sony I will be loyal until death long live play and bury me with a ps controller

MaxXAttaxX4748d ago

I think he was being sarcastic...

sofocado4747d ago

What Specs? MS did not went to details regarding the specs. Sony and MS concentrate on different things for the reveal. We all have to wait for E3 for more details regarding PS4 and Xbox_One.

TBONEJF4747d ago

This is not a phone or tablet it's a gaming console. Get through your thick head.

WickedLester4747d ago

Yes because that's exactly what I want with my new powerful gaming console....apps!

Oh wait, I sense sarcasm in your post. Am I correct in that?

Such a useless feature when I can use the generic apps on a computer and hook up that up to the TV if I choose to do so.

The Xboxone is almost a disaster when I search for "xboxone" it brings up results for the "xbox1 original". It's better than the WiiU, but that's not saying much.

I was confident in buying the PS4 and "Xboxnow"( that is a better name" at launch day but now I'm not sure about the Xboxnow. I'm gonna wait for the games and what the kinect games have to offer. However PS4 is without a doubt warrants a day-one purchase.

DivineAssault 4748d ago

hell yea.. All it is is a more fine tuned kinect UI.. The multiplats will be lower in quality compared to PS4 so i have no use for a system thats only exclusives will be kinect games & timed dlc

hesido4747d ago (Edited 4747d ago )

And there's little to stop Sony if they wanted an add-on (PlayTV for PS4), it could even be cheap if they can make use the PS4 encoder to do stuff (although USB 3.0's bandwidth is not sufficient for full HD uncompressed 1080p60fps video (1080i or 720p would work), so it would have to do its own compression for such cases.

HappyGaming4747d ago

A source told me Microsoft is currently working on the next Xbox it will be called Xbox Three Sixty.

xDHAV0K24x4747d ago

my desktop is never used. don't own a tablet or laptop. prefer not to use netfilx on my phone so yea netfilx/hulu will be played on my X1. thanks. some of u ps fanboys make it seem like all u do is play games on ur console. cut it out. msft isn't sega so stop thinking it will go away. if it hasn't by now, it won't any time soon. don't get me wrong, ps is definitely a force to reckon with, a juggernaut naturally, but don't overlook X1. E3 is where it's at...Killer Instinct will make it's triumphant return to showcase that brand new d-pad xD

Microsoft didn't reveal the type of ram, but it is expected to be DDR3.
I guess the leaks were true. 1.2TF vs 1.8TF. Still, I'm wondering what the Cloud and the Xbox One getting more "powerful" as time goes on means. It sounds like something akin to FOlding at Home, where the processing power of PS3's were used to map proteins and such.

F@H was a success, so I wonder why they pulled the plug?

Edit: this edit is just in case people want to come in and say that F@H wasn't a PS3 only feature. Yes, it was also on the PC.

dalibor4748d ago

Not sure how you could prefer the DS4 over the One controller since they are not yet available to the public. I need to get my hands on both and test them out. I have used so many controllers haha ever since the Nes. I will say they both look nice and seem comfortable to hold. What I want to see is how the triggers on DS4 compare to DS3. And give us more colors to cheese from.

cyguration4748d ago

If I got a PS4 I would just get a Splitfish controller that looks like the XB1 controller.

I love what Sony is doing with the games, but no lie, that XB1 controller looks so freaking sexy that if it were a model it would tough for people to walk into the room without making a mess in their pants...or on the floor.

dalibor4748d ago

Haha the XB1 controller does look great but you do know that you can get used to either controller. You have to be adaptive. I have no problem using either one. The only big difference is the analog placement and how big they are. The DS4 looks to be a bit bulkier than DS3 but I will try it for myself and see. What they should have done was make both controllers being capable of being used for either system. Now that would be a neat feature. All in harmony lol

Retroman4747d ago (Edited 4747d ago )

i'll say it now : after watching that disappointing conference from MS x-box1-- SONY won this gen. already
thats my prediction.

NeXXXuS4747d ago (Edited 4747d ago )

Here's a breakdown of the Xbox One in a GIF

http://i.minus.com/iBzvb2JS...

I still have no idea why they're doing what they're doing with this console... I see no good outcome. Or maybe I'm really stupid and the Xbox One is so magnificent that we can't possibly fathom what they are trying to do.

What puzzles me the most is how Microsoft appears to be trying to tell gamers what they want instead of listening to them. They have unlimited resources but they remind me of the way the auto industry worked. Detroit told Americans for years you want big cars, lots of power, etc. Well people wanted affordable cars with fuel economy. Japan and Germany listened and offered cars that outsold domestic until they started to listen to what consumers wanted.

marchinggamer4748d ago

In what way you give no examples?

dalibor4748d ago

I think he/she was talking about games. MS seemed to show off more of the Kinect rather than games. Kinect should have been the last thing they talked about or showed really but lets see what MS shows off at E3 as far as games go same for Sony.

DigitalRaptor4746d ago (Edited 4746d ago )

Just listen to this Xbox executive's worried and awkward demeanor. Listen to his shifty and deflective answers.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Microsoft are a joke, and I'm just glad they've exposed themselves. Now it's up to the gamers, AND especially the journalists to keep rallying against them until they decide to support people buying their products rather than their own corporate greed. Sadly, I think Microsoft's anti-consumer restrictions are well in play.

Ulf4748d ago

You got it wrong bro. MS isn't telling *gamers* what they want at all.

You thought they were talking to just gamers?

Father__Merrin4748d ago

ps4 is better than xbox 1 were best of just leaving it at that

marchinggamer4748d ago

In what way? I know the gddr5
But what about looks? We don't know and the controller Sony has always made the worst controllers fit for a baby's hands
Online? Usually a personal preference I don't mind paying 60 a year for a better than any other service example cross game chat

Daves4748d ago

Looks?! Are you seriously going to sit there looking at the damn thing? :)

Form-factor is another thing, I happen to like the hi-fi rack size stacking ability of the Xbox One.

As for the PS4 controller. I have held it and it's f'in gorgeous.

cjflora4748d ago

Woah buddy, did you just transport from 2007? You may want to take another look at the online offerings of each console again...

GenericNameHere4748d ago

"Sony has always made the worst controllers fit for a baby's hands "
That's your opinion. I may not be the skinniest boy, but my big hands feel perfectly fine on a DS3. Americans aren't the only people in the world.

"Online? Usually a personal preference I don't mind paying 60 a year for a better than any other service example cross game chat"
.............. Really??... If I were David Jaffe, and we were in the same discussing about games, I would have slapped you right in the face. Wouldn't matter if it was a professional debate, I would have just slapped you right there and then. I can't believe people still think Xbox Live as something greater than sliced bread. Btw, Vita has XCG. Wanna know how much it costs? Let me spell it out for you. Ef...Arrrr... Eeeeee....Eeee. What does that spell? FREE! You don't even need to pay a 60/y membership for it! Sony must be idiots for not selling XGC, huh?

Jyndal4748d ago

Man...I have to say I'm going PS4 all the way.

I'd hoped that MS would pull out a surprise that would sway me, but I can't say I'm impressed at all.

Sony FTW.

SlavisH24748d ago

Both were not great if you ask me. SOny no system, no real system details. MS no games really shown, no system details.

Daves4748d ago

We play games, Sony has the games... nothing else matters really.

I think both have outlined their 'system' plans adequately.

r214748d ago (Edited 4748d ago )

Sony told their specs. Unless a specs sheet isnt a real system detail for you. Heck, everyone knows the specs so far has been great.

NarooN4747d ago

So what if Sony didn't show what the system looks like? That's not important. Sony already told us what the PS4's specs are and what it's capable of. Sony also has the games. Actual games. That's what's important for a *gaming* console.

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio22d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing21d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9221d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit21d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing21d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9221d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8524d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele23d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk23d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10124d ago (Edited 24d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit23d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg23d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10123d ago (Edited 23d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14924d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay23d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn224d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn223d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown24d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay23d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay23d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac23d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger24d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300024d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde24d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde23d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
