Hardware Matchup: PS4 vs. Xbox One

The Game Effect details and compares the official specs of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One and finds that, on paper, the PS4 has a small leg up on the Xbox One.

There's no way in hell this image is a valid comparison between the PS4 and X1 GPUs:
http://i.imgur.com/ECFBQVr....

For one, the PS4 (and maybe) the X1 use unified memory. 8 GB for both the CPU and GPU to use.

Then comes the floating-point performance. The AMD 7970 has 3.8 TFLOPS of compute performance. Official sources say the PS4's GPU has a TOTAL computer performance of 1.84 TFLOPS.

Higher pixel fill rate, texture rate, yaddayaddayadda. None of this means anything in the context of the PS4 and X1. These are PC GPU comparisons.

Lol at the thought of Sony using a 250W GPU in the PS4.

Qrphe4742d ago

The 1.84 TFLOPS are for the GPU, not total

Pandamobile4742d ago

You're right. My bad, I edited the post.

SuperLupe4742d ago (Edited 4742d ago )

Anyway, if the PS4 is more powerful than "the One" (actually sounds cool saying that) it will be just like this gen ... practically unpercievable.

And when you can actually percieve the differance, well it will apply to that one blockbuster per year.

Nothing to fight about really.

edit: geez I lost a bubble in just 3 or 4 comments of NON Xbox One bashing, gotta jump on the hate train quick I guess before I dissapear.

GrizzliS19874742d ago

4 will always be greater than 1.

Salooh4742d ago

@Super

Nothing to fight in spec side which is a good thing. But the focus is completely different. Ps4 focus on games but the one focus on kinect and tv. That's a huge thing.

I buy Consoles for serious games not casual or tv. MS is making the features from extra to main thing.

zebramocha4742d ago

@super going by gaf that's not the case because the extra performance can use for physic, better effects and any other things that could use the performance.

SuperLupe4742d ago (Edited 4742d ago )

Yes I see of course. But E3 is 3 three weeks away.

It would have been worrying if they had made such a reveal back in Febuary for instance since E3 would be 3 or 4 months away.

Like I said in another post, If I were MS I would have done a same kind of reveal since Im only 3 weeks away from E3. Their E3 show will probably be 1h30 long as usual ... they wont be talking about everything they talked about today since it would have been only 3 weeks away. That means 1h30 of games (or almost)

Sony showed games alright, but of course since the next big event they would have to hype the PS4 is 3 and half months away.

Im not saying the conferance was great (way too much TV stuff) but MS definately did the right thing by focusing on the console and its ecosystem itself rather than the games.

Aldo do you realize that for the first time in 2 or 3 years they will NOT be ending their E3 conf with a COD game ... I think thats a great sign of whats to come concerning exclusives and games in general for the One at E3.

And a bit off topic but I think Xbox One is a coherant name, the console itself looks slick but boring and the controller is a win. Just my opinion. Feel free to have yours.

MysticStrummer4742d ago

@Lupe - PS4 will have more available memory to use for games. That's all I care about and the difference will definitely be perceivable.

Saigon4742d ago

@SuperLupe

I see what you are trying to say in your last post, but I think some people forget Sony had a big showing at GDC. Again, So they did a reveal in Feb. and had a huge showing of the PS4 Specs and interface at the GDC conference. This is very similar to what MS is doing right now. Technically Sony has showed or revealed something about the PS4 the last few months except this month, and that is most likely due to E3. Either way because, IMHO, Sony choose to reveal their system early it made many individuals question MS tactics. Was it wrong, no, was it right, no. I say that because it hurt them a little, many individuals had doubts about the system and now, just check the internet, many gamers are disappointed in what was revealed. I love the tools and features they showed, but man they didn't say anything that said, gamers come and get me. I may be wrong, but many feel the same. I know I will take hits for this but its my opinion and also mixed with what I have been reading all on the internet.

ProjectVulcan4742d ago (Edited 4742d ago )

Tentative specs from what I have gathered.

Xbox one:

1.6ghz 8 core AMD Jaguar x86 CPU

12 CU, 768 shader 1.2 teraflop AMD Radeon 7k based GPU

8GB DDR3 main system memory (68GB/s)

32mb ESRAM (102Gb/s)

PS4:

2.0ghz 8 core AMD Jaguar x86 CPU (25 percent faster)

18 CU, 1152 shader 1.8 teraflop AMD Radeon 7k based GPU (potentially 50 percent faster depending on precise core configuration/clocks)

8GB GDDR5 main system memory (176GB/s)

This is less a direct battle, because of Xbox one's ESRAM. The fact remains however, PS4 would STILL have more memory bandwidth across its entire 8Gb pool devs can allocate however they please- than Xbox one has COMBINED in its main memory PLUS its smaller (and much more limited use) ESRAM pool!

Flexiblity is usually king.

I said before that the GPUs are more comparable with a 7770ghz in Xbox one, and a Radeon 7580 in PS4. This isn't going to be a perfect comparison. But that is the sort of performance we'll see.

A lot of places seem to quote roughly a Radeon 7790 (1.79 teraflops) for Xbox, but its way too fast compared to a 768 shader part supposedly running about 800mhz and doing 1.2 teraflops. That sort of performance is virtually 7770 level (1.28 teraflops)

A lot more then boils down to OS level. How many CPU cores can devs access? It appears at least 6 on both machines. How much memory? GPU resource allocation? etc etc

Further mysteries to be investigated that will affect overall performance.

As it is though, PS4 is faster pretty much everywhere it counts by varying margins, it seems. The key battleground is the GPU, and PS4 takes it at a canter.

Now lets see more games.

ABizzel14741d ago

Well considering the rumors, and the small pools of facts revealed by MS here are the results.

CPU: Tie, but the edge goes to Sony.

Both use the same CPU (although MS has to have a core dedicated to Kinect since it's always on, where PS Eye isn't at least for now)

GPU: Sony 7850+ 1.84 TFLOPS vs. MS 7770 GHz, Winner Sony

The PS4 has more graphical horsepower than the Xbox One, although the difference isn't huge, but it is there. 3rd parties likely won't show this difference much, but Sony's 1st party game will be ahead once again, but a bit more than the difference between PS3 vs 360.

RAM: Sony 8GB GDDR5 vs. MS 8GB DDR3, Winner Sony / Both

8GB for both gaming consoles is exactly what they needed. As for social media and entertainment MS may have the better set-up due to less latency and a rumored 3GB of RAM dedicated to non-gaming features (which I believe since it's running 3 OS, Kinect always one, DVR, and all the app & media components). But when it comes to gaming Sony's RAM is flat out better even with MS eDRAM, on top of that Sony has a rumored 7GB of RAM to use for it's games. 7 > 1.

Overall: 4 > 1

At least hardware-wise. The PS4 is potentially anywhere from 30% - 50% more powerful than the Xbox One, and as of now it's leaning more towards 50% due to the heavy focus on media for MS. MS would be wise to reduce the RAM footprint on their console, as well as Kinect's from the CPU and RAM so they can reamin as close to Sony as possible. But that conference just proved MS's new strategy is not about the gamer, but anyone who has an HDTV in their living room, which is smart business-wise, but not what Gamers want to hear. E3 is their last chance to save face, but even then many of their core gamers are still going to feel the slap of the reveal, and sit on the fence on buying a PS4 vs. Xbox One which is what you never want.

XishikiX4742d ago

I think the article got confused because the PS4 GPU's always been compared between the 7850, and 7870. and that's where tit's TFLOPS comparison falls as well.

Muerte24944742d ago

we still have yet to see that 1080p Triple-A title on the xbox360. Wow it's getting bad guys. Xbox fans calling foul, but not so much 7 years ago.

wishingW3L4742d ago (Edited 4742d ago )

X1 = 5Gb DDR3 for games

PS4 = 7GB GDDR5 for games

It seems that Sony exclusives will be the only ones that will take full advantage of the PS4 just like it was on the PS3. Basically, gimped multiplats confirmed.

ado9084742d ago

@wishinhW3L

Well not entirely according to those specs it should be easier to develop for the PS4 than the Xbox one. This gen is the other way around.

Tonester9254742d ago (Edited 4742d ago )

I wonder how much RAM will be used now that the TV, Movie, Game,Music, UI, etc will all be going on at once.

I don't know too much about RAM but can someone explain how much RAM could be used now that EVERYTHING is connected.

Can someone explain this to me

Pandamobile4742d ago

Apparently 5 is usable for games.

a_bro4742d ago

Apparently 3 operating systems are running at the same time on the Xbox one, the game system os, windows 8, and kinect. 1 gb each. So the system is locking 3gbsmjust for these things. Pretty much as what the rumors has stated.

GrownUpGamer4742d ago

Everybody who have an XBOX and XBOX360 knows that they are Gaming Consoles and those who bough them bough them for that. What M$ is doing now is trying to reach those who are not HARDCORE gamers/ or just people who casually enjoy video games to come to the Xbox ONE. Those who bash the M$ approach are simply ignorants. If Sony was the one coming with this approach i bet that the 80% of PS fanboys here will be praising SONY for that.

SORRY PS Fanboys but the ONE is going to also play Video Games. STOP crying and hating and GROW UP.

PiTCHBLaCK4741d ago

Sony did it first, been there done that. PS3 was advertised as a Home Entertainment system. MS is just following what Sony started.

JamieL4741d ago

@ waltercross
And listen to the hate ya'll spread when they do. If "MS is just following what Sony started.", then why aren't ya'll still praising this tactic? If they are trying to be so much more like Sony, shouldn't that be a good thing for ya'll (as in the Sony fanatics)? If they copy them just right then they should be in the red in no time, then you can really be happy. I think the system has mass potential to be huge. I was also very surprised about the comment about the 15 exclusives, 8 being new IP's. That at the very least shows they've got some idea of the current gripes, and at least acknowledge they need to do something. It's got me hyped for E3 that’s fo-sho. They both do to be honest, PS4 and X1, I've loved games since the 2600, I'm down to see where they go.

Arai4742d ago

Here's a better comparison between the 2 GPU's:
http://www.hwcompare.com/12...

Even then it's all speculation until the systems are released and dissected.

But as has been proven by the leaks provided by VGleaks these 2 GPU's are almost spot on in the sense of what are being put into the PS4/XBOXO.

ps4 4 me. Still a gamer so.

DivineAssault 4742d ago

agreed pal.. MS lost focus on what a game system is mainly for & as it stands, i think their hiding the fact its using ddr3 ram instead of gddr5 like PS4.. Plus PS4 is designed to be easy for all types of devs to make games so we will get more of them... PS4 100%

DemonSlayer4204742d ago

PS4 with Deep Down for me please

Random thought, wasn't there an article stating game development was behind on Xbox One? Could be why nothing was shown.

edit: hmm didn't hear that, i'm a random. i come like once and a week and didn't even have an account til today. Microsoft just seems behind on this

RandomDude6554742d ago

There was another rumor on GAF that the newer studios at MS are suffering really bad mismanagement. Probably why they still haven't been mentioned

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose17d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE17d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername16d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy17d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde16d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8616d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8616d ago (Edited 16d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

pwnmaster300017d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle16d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
