The problem I have with people like this gentleman is he brings up games like Uncharted and Bioshock Infinite as examples of what's wrong with game design. Those games are loved by millions, so they are doing something right. When franchises like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Uncharted, even the first Cod Modern Warfare first launched, they drew large audiences and got sales because they were fresh and different. Now that there have been many iterations of such franchises, it is normal for gamers and developers to feel those games aren't innovative anymore. They aren't new so they cannot bring that same sense of inventiveness they once did. Because of their financial success, they continue to do what made them successful in the beginning, making minor changes in philosophy not major overhauls. So we kill them for it and want better. But we would kill them if they changed the franchises so radically that it became unrecognizable from what the series originally offered (see Mass Effect). I am greatly looking forward to the next Uncharted, and think this guy is confused. I would love to know what he would change in Bioshock. It is very highly rated and well received by the fans. What is wrong with that? And after that, I would ask him why he didn't make the game, if he thinks he could do better. Where is his brilliant, multimillion dollar selling original work? It's easy to criticize others, but if you're not producing great content yourself, what is your point exactly? My point is that there is room in gaming for titles like Call of Duty or Battlefield and Beyond:Two Souls, Heavy Rain, or Journey, for example. One man's trash is another man's treasure. This guy says he's making a game with no combat. OK. But just because you say you're making a game without combat doesn't mean jack. It still has to capture the imagination of the public and sell to be successful. There is plenty of COD clone shovelware sitting on the shelves not selling. Just because you have bullets flying all around the screen doesn't mean you will sell millions, and just because you choose to make a game without combat doesn't make you an artist.

I respect this developers opinion, but there is a place and market for all types of games, not just shoot em up bloody gore titles.

Although, I did not see it mentioned by the developer, the tone of the discussion, felt like he is disappointed that most of the successful games are violent.

Less Military FPS...if your going to do a FPS, give it a unique Art Style like Team Fortress and make it about fun.

We need more "other" games instead of 70% FPS games.

They get old...we've been playing them far too much the past 7-8 years and it's starting to show..

These dev's are in for a rude awakening if they think FPS sales will stay how they've been.

Once the public/gamers get a taste for what else is out there they might never come back to FPS.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit62d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing62d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9261d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
