This seems a little weird, Injustice, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter aren't beat-em-ups. They're fighters...

humbleopinion4790d ago

Exactly. This write up doesn't even make sense...

If he's referring to fighting games, then yes: the last innovation in the genre probably came from the DOA series (multi-leveled arenas, online, rock-paper-scissors fighting system, co-op battles).

Beat'em' up however are totally different: just recently we had anarchy online which did bring some new ideas.

a_bro4791d ago

umm why change something that works very well?

WeAreLegion4790d ago

I feel like the answer is a little too obvious, but things need to change if people are going to pay $60 for the same formula over and over.

Devil May Cry redefined action games. I'm glad it did, too! It influenced so many other games, like Ninja Gaiden, God of War, and Castlevania:LofS.

Sometimes, we need change.

Inception4790d ago (Edited 4790d ago )

Agreed with a_bro. Maybe some change how fighting games need good story like Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, or Mortal Kombat. But for gameplay, if you too much changing the core gameplay than bam! your fans will say goodbye to your games.

WeAreLegion4790d ago

Seriously. I feel like I've been playing Street Fighter II since it came out. The genre NEEDS some new stuff. Dragonball Z: Budokai was a GREAT step forward, in my opinion. It's a shame they couldn't evolve it that well after 3. :/

Of course, I'm more of a brawler guy. Power Stone 1/2 and PSASBR are my favorites.

WildArmed4790d ago

Absolutely loved Budokai 2/3.
I wish we had more of them!

WeAreLegion4790d ago

Agreed.

Also...I forgot fighting fans were so rabid. :/

pompombrum4790d ago

The problem is, with the current developer mentality, especially Japanese developers sadly, change in direction means more accessible and more casual.

Inception4790d ago

In fighting games, Mortal Kombat is more casual than BlazBlue, Persona 4 Arena, or SF IV.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde41d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy41d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

Mortal Kombat: Flawless Victory Announced

A new book detailing the artwork of the franchise has been announced

robtion306d ago

Let me fix this title to something less click baity for you:

New Book: Mortal Kombat: Flawless Victory Announced.

Garethvk306d ago (Edited 306d ago )

The description clearly says what it is. It is not like people have to click to the site. They just have to read.

robtion306d ago

Sure they don't have to go to the site but to get to the description they already have to have clicked on it. Thus the term 'click bait'.

Rebel_Scum306d ago (Edited 306d ago )

If its a book say its a book in the article title. Everyone’s gonna think this is a new game and get annoyed reading your description.

Garethvk306d ago (Edited 306d ago )

The Mods had no issues with the title.
The first line under the image says new book and you can see it in the preview windows without even having to click to read the description.

It also says a Visual History on the image.

Rebel_Scum306d ago

On desktop and mobile the text a visual history is not visible in the thumbnail on the homepage.

I grew up on this stuff. Adding it to the art collection!

I do hope the next MK iteration goes back to the core of what made these characters appeal in the first place. A few of them lost their edge - I think I've had enough with some of the auntie designs 😂
