First screenshot of Source engine running in DX10?

PCGH.de shows a screenshot comparison between a DX9 and a DX10 scene. It's ripped off a GDC presentation from Valve that explains the visual difference in Alpha Blending on DX9 and DX10 cards. While this may not be completely DX10, at least it shows differences in terms of smoke on DX9 and DX10 cards.

Looking at the diagram it shows DX10 and the Xbox360 using the process. This just helps confirm earlier reports by developers that the 360 while not using the offical DX10 standard works the same way.

Dx10 & Xb360? I thought XB360 was only capable of Dx9 graphics?

Marceles6643d ago (Edited 6643d ago )

Not to sound like a fanboy or anything...but the Source engine on my PC using DX9 looks better than the console versions, and my computer is running a 1.4 ghz, 2 gig of ram, ATI Radeon 9600 with High everything + 2x AA. The only thing I really notice from the screens are the dust clouds, but even I have better looking screens than this and my PC isn't state of the art at all

Edit: Translation of the article with it

"The GDC talk on ' post Processing in the Orange box ' begins alpha Blending with the subject and lights up which technical and optical differences there are between Direct X 9 and Direct X 10 / Xbox 360.

The DX10/Xbox 360 variation of the Source engine shows a thicker smoke, slightly changed annealing with the Gravity Gun and an easily modified health-announcement. You find the pictures fitting to it and the technical basic scaffolding in the gallery."

1up reports that ATI has debunked a rumor that Xbox 360 could be upgraded to support DirectX 10 via a patch. "Xbox360 cannot run DX10," an ATI spokesperson told 1up. Currently, Microsoft's console runs an advanced version of DirectX 9, which, according to ATI, features "memory export that can enable DX10-class functionality such as stream-out."

The Xbox 360 has its own custom version of DirectX that shares features of both DX9 and DX10.

Blademask6643d ago

Yes but it is more the equivalent of direct x 9.2

Thats why you have huge leaps from Crysis Dx9 and Crysis Dx10. It shares minimal features like cache management, but nothing close to the lighting and shader capabilities that devs achieve through dx10. Thats why in the past 3 years you dont see any 360 games with the leaps and bounds that dx10 does for PC titles.

Statix6643d ago (Edited 6643d ago )

There are hardly any features exhibited in the DX10 build of Crysis that couldn't be done in DX9. This is a proven fact. The most advanced shaders and effects that you speak of, including Parallax Occlusion, Ambient Occlusion, HDR, and what have you, are all completely doable under the DX9 api, with possible performance gains, no less.

Use of some baseless and fabricated distinctions between DX9 and DX10 is nothing more than fanboy fodder to boast one gaming platform over another, by people who know nothing of what they speak.

Blademask6643d ago

The most current form of DX9 Doesn't represent the form that resides on the 360, which is the form Ford was talking about in the first place.

Judging from what you know, even you have to know that the 360's version of DX9 isn't comparable to the PC version.

is it just me or do they look the same? I see no deference

AllroundGamer6643d ago

well they added the fog, can't you see that? :D

Blademask6643d ago (Edited 6643d ago )

Seriously the DX10 version doesn't even hold a candle to Bioshock.

This and the Unreal engine will make plenty of bland looking games that run on an old PC just fine that devs can charge 60 dollars for. Bugs included. Dark Sector 2 ftw!

If you want to see how DX10 is supposed to look, play crysis.

gEnKiE6643d ago

I agree...Source looks nice but its starting to show its age. Open world environments are starting to be the norm and I haven't really seen Source pull off anything as big as Crysis or Oblivion.

TheIneffableBob6643d ago

Source is great because it can run on just about any computer while still looking great.

Avto6643d ago (Edited 6643d ago )

looks o.k but could have been better think CryEngine2 and what's with DX10&X360 Xenos is nowhere as good as DX10 card take Bioshock X360 vs PC DX10 big difference

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Levii_92375d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil375d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

__y2jb375d ago (Edited 375d ago )

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

One of my biggest art heroes. His work and vision were truly one of a kind, and he’s been a huge inspiration to my own work. Such a heartbreaking loss.

Deeeeznuuuts457d ago

Remember seeing Dishonored for the first time when it released, fell in love with the art style straight away, so striking! And because of it, still holds up and will for years to come, RIP Viktor

JEECE457d ago

Yep I remember seeing some of the earliest concept art for Dishonored and hearing that the art director of Half-Life 2 was working on it and being excited.

And you are absolutely right, each of those games (HL2 and Dishonored) has a distinct art style that stands the test of time.

Relientk77457d ago

So sad to hear this. I absolutely love the Dishonored series and love the world and art style. It looks great and unique. I'm still hoping for a Dishonored 3

rokos457d ago

RIP Viktor love your work

Ethereal457d ago

Damn... Dishonored has such amazing art. RIP.
