Digital Foundry - Inside PlayStation 4

What Sony told game developers at GDC.

Sony is lifting the lid on PlayStation 4 development, finally revealing detailed technical information on its powerful new platform along with the philosophy that drives it. At GDC yesterday, SCEA senior staff engineer Chris Norden spoke to game developers about the core architecture that powers the new console, going into depth on the controller and camera while giving us some insight into what makes the PS4's x86 64-bit architecture a cut above your typical gaming PC.

Whichever way you look at the PS4, it's all good so far.
Be it for gamers or developers and the titles keep popping up.

no technical spec i want to know how fast the cpu is !! i want to know how many shaders can the gpu produce

GraveLord4787d ago

8-Core AMD CPU clocked at 1.6GhZ.

PeaSFor4787d ago (Edited 4787d ago )

still kinda hard to do a comparison with a normal PC cpu, since its not like the basic AMD cpu.

talking about the specs by simply reducing it like normal pc hardware would be foolish.

...and on 'normal' AMD GPUs so far, context switching between compute and graphics threads has been expensive. To the point where system designers have been advised to use a separate APU and GPU if they intend to make heavy use of compute, so that you can run compute on one chip and graphics on another, without having to mix the two thread types. Future APUs will fix this, but not before PS4's chip needs to be ready.

So Sony made pretty massive bumps to resources around how compute tasks are scheduled, so context switching between graphics and compute tasks becomes viable.

medziarz4787d ago (Edited 4787d ago )

The clock frequency has not been revealed (nor probably finalized).

Whitey2k4787d ago

Theres a rumour that the cpu has been upped to 2ghz

hesido4787d ago

There hasn't been an official statement about clock speed, has there? The 1.6 ghz information is based on the dev kits, but I seriously think they may well do a bump to 1.8, along with a 100mhz inrease on the GPU cores?

people should stop comparing it to a PC,it's a console,if anything compare it to the only next gen console which is out now for months the Nintendo wii u .....
console's vs console's....
PC's vs PC's...

HyperBear4787d ago

Ever since February 20, I cannot think of one reason why I would not buy a PS4! Sony (SCE) have done an amazing job with restructuring the PlayStation company and brand, with an entirely new focus solely on the gamer and the gaming experience(s)....Something we haven't seen from the Big 3 in a really long time, and all this is making E3 the most exciting place to be come June :D

Snake-eater4787d ago

Yeah, they went to the playstation 1 roots, gaming console to the core

DigitalRaptor4787d ago

Nicely put, both of you.

That should be PS4's tagline: "Gaming to the core".

AnyaShroud4787d ago

I learned the CPU doesn't have 176GB/s bandwidth to the GDDR5, only 20GB/s, so it's more like DDR3 bandwidth.

medziarz4787d ago (Edited 4787d ago )

These are X720 leaks, no specifics about PS4 CPU cores revealed. The former mention 20GB/s per 4-core module.

AnyaShroud4787d ago

"We have heard that the bandwidth levels of certain components vary though. While the GPU has full access to 176GB/s, one source tells us that the CPU is more constrained at around 20GB/s - still pretty good at around two-thirds the level of bandwidth available to Intel's Ivy Bridge. However, depending on how you interpret what Chris Norden said, you could either view PS4 as having unified bandwidth levels across all components or simply that 176GB/s is the maximum level of bandwidth across the entire system."

HyperBear4787d ago

CPU's never tap into the full amount of memory bandwidth in a PC or console. Intel's Core i7-3770K has a maximum memory bandwidth of 25.6GB/s, So if PS4's CPU memory bandwidth is around 20GB/s, that's still pretty reasonable, and don't forget:

1) Use of GDDR5, will give the CPU accelerated boosts at certain times when needed, unlike using conventional DDR3
2) It is a custom APU, meaning technically the entire system CPU+GPU can get streamlined access to the 176GB/s bandwidth the unified memory provides, at any time. (So roughly 20-25GB/s for CPU; 151-156GB/s for GPU = Total of 176GB/s throughout the system at all times)

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

-Foxtrot6d ago

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose8d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE8d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername7d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy8d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde7d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire867d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire867d ago (Edited 7d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster30008d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle7d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments
