The PS4's Camera Can Do Some Cool Tricks

Norden gave a presentation designed to introduce the PlayStation 4 to developers. The talk was mostly technical, but they shared new details about the PS4, including how the augmented reality features will work.

The AR will use the PS4's camera, the PlayStation 4 Eye, in combination with the new DualShock controller, which will combine with facial recognition to let the PS4 identify each player based not only on their controller, but their face.

Godmars2904794d ago

Just so long as I don't need it, I don't care.

smashcrashbash4794d ago

I know it is your opinion and everything but was it really necessary to say you don't care?

iGAM3R-VIII4794d ago (Edited 4794d ago )

Well technically he is right, but I guess you have an opinion to and everyones opinion is different, unless you are truely trolling. Anyway, most of the cameras features seem interesting, I will have to wait until E3 to see a demo and see what it actually does.

CommonSenseGamer + 9m ago
Yes, but Kinect is what the PS eye should have been and now it looks like it is.
#2.2.1 Agree(1) | Disagree(4) | Report

EDIT: @CommonSenseGamer you comment is very ironic because of your username, I would of thought that you had common sense. The original EyeToy was made in 1997 (correct me if wrong) and do you really think ANY company could of made a Kinect back then.

joeorc4794d ago

"So the PS Eye web cam (what ever it's called) had an infrared projector, 3D RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone, full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition and voice recognition capabilities?

I'm just going to go ahead and answer that for you and just say "NO" it didn't.

I know you guys like to "pretend" it's just a PS Eye, but it's new technology that Sony just blatantly copied. Yup! ripped off or copied, but at the end of the day, it's just a Kinect clone you guys now have to defend.... KARMA!

Go ahead and try to prove me wrong. Scour the net for as long as you like. You will find nothing but dust and tumble weeds. "

well seeing how this is quite a few year's before kinect technology was "Licenced" by Microsoft, Sony R&D lab's was already working on such evolution for the Eyetoy, or Playstation EYE.

Project Natal running on PlayStation 2 , over 5 years before it came out for Microsoft's xbox360!

if kinect tech was sonys tech then sony would sue ms. thats how the logical world knows its not the same thing. gas motors and hybrid motors do the same thing but its not the same tech. u r saying that sonys gas motor is the same as ms hybrid and trying to give sony the credit.

no im not saying that in the slightest!

did you even watch the video?

That was Kinect! the technology they were using in that demo was Prime sense, Sony was looking into using it way before Microsoft was! over 4 year's infact before Microsoft was

Sony cannot sue for technology they did not make can they?

What i was pointing out, was that Sony's R&D WAS ONE OF THE Companies that was looking into 3D Depth senseing technology for Gaming. Saying they copy Microsoft in this Idea for 3D depth senseing camera Technology for Game's,is kinda far fetched. As a matter of fact in 2000 many companies aside from Sony saw this was going to be a trend in the next decade Siggraph 2000 technology event's onward shows that in the keynotes . one of which Sony's very own DR. Richard Marks demo'ed many times over the several year's while showing off their concept of Move and camera technology combined for a interactive control method for game's.

thechosenone4793d ago

I'm getting it, I want to try out motion gaming next gen and it'll be a good break from the typical core games that I play, also it looks so damn sexy.

MurDocINC4793d ago

I wanna know if I can use it to aim?
And can I secretly record me doing girls on the couch?

darthv724793d ago

oh you will care AND you will need it. Because the games being developed for it will not be played any other way.

Do you think the inclusion of the light bar on the controller is just there for aesthetics? Its there because it will be integrated into the games for the PS4.

for something to be used to its potential, it has to be there from the beginning. If it is an after thought, it will never truly be realized or incorporated in the various games that are made for the system.

Many may not like the wii and the motion gaming in general but the wii did something the other systems didnt. It was standard with a wiimote and you had to use that wiimote for every game released. Regardless if the game supported the classic controller or gamecube controller, it was the wiimote first and foremost.

The devs have the discretion of using the extra abilities of the wiimote just as they will have the discretion of using the new ps4 eye but because its there and (hopefully) its included in every box, there is no excuses to NOT find a way to utilize it.

YOU may not like the idea but you havent experienced how its used so you are casting your doubt before even trying it. Now that could be based off experience of using Kinect. But we will know soon enough if it is just like kinect or better. im willing to give it a chance and I think others should as well.

On a side note, it can be said that if the parent company doesnt support their own product then it is doomed to fail. Nintendo released several afterthought products within their time. ROB, powerglove, powerpad...just as sony has released some add-ons that they didnt fully support either.

If sony believes this is the time for it to be a game changer, we will know by how much support they give it right from the start. And while people may hate MS and kinect, at least they have been supporting their product since it came out. They believe it is worth supporting from games made to use it exclusively to the incorporation of simpler uses in traditional games.

People can fault MS for the idea of giving up on core gamers but you cant fault them for standing by their product. If a kinect 2 is part of every nextbox sold, better believe it will get the full support of the developers making games for that platform. Especially if they are multiplatform and they know there is something similar to it on the PS4.

Irishguy954793d ago (Edited 4793d ago )

It's simple, sony 'look into things'. MS and Nintendo 'do things'. Sony then follows up with a lightbulb dildo and Kinect for Ps4. Once it was ensured the motion controls were successful products after MS and Nintendo took the risk with their motion controls.

kingfetish174793d ago

Augmented Reality is pretty cool. Seen it in action on the MK Vita game.

The more features, the merrier. As long as they're not required and don't cost any subscription fees.

Base off the title of the article and knowing you don't care why bother commenting it?

Godmars2904794d ago

Because I DO care?

Whether or not Sony includes it the PS4 its going to effect how games are made. Its also more than likely that later during the console's cycle they may just bundle it with a system.

I'm not hot on the social features they're adding and I still have a bug up my butt in regards to how HD has ruined sprite animation on home systems. So yeah, if Sony's going to do the same crap MS has with Kinect, even if its more of an option, I care about it.

Donnieboi4794d ago

What's your beef with the camera? People jist love to hate new ideas...

irepbtown4793d ago

I just think he wants to enjoy the experience to his liking. I'm all for innovation, but sometimes I just don't want it to affect ME.

However this sounds pretty awesome. Little robots on the controller haha. Would love to read and preferably see more of this.

ps3_pwns4793d ago

i actually will need it though because i got some sexy ladies who are gonna come over when i get the ps4 and we gonna make some movies.

WUTCHUGUNNADO4793d ago

Anything with a camera that's able to connect wireless can be used to spy on you... Investigation units already use phones for that very purpose. It's like voluntarily bugging yourself though it won't matter unless your on a most wanted list or a mob boss but it's still creepy.

GribbleGrunger4793d ago (Edited 4793d ago )

So, what exactly is wrong with Godmars290 thinking? Yes, it's simple, but largely speaking that just means he's being completely honest. Rather than frame his thoughts in rhetoric he's offered a no frills opinion that I actually agree with. I'm also happy with the PSEye2 as long as it's optional. If optional means I can't then use sales for flag waving, I don't really care. What I DO care about is having a choice.

I don't care that certain franchises on the PS3 didn't sell as many copies as certain franchises on the 360, I just care that they are great games or that there are far more of them. I don't feel it necessary to force myself to like MOVE simply because Sony decided to ignore me and opt to cater purely for the casuals. I can be honest, as Godmars290 has been.

And why is it that so many people feel it necessary to start the 'who copied who' nonsense yet again. Haven't you realised by now that it's a fruitless endeavour and that those you accuse of copying can actually provide proof that they haven't copied but rather simply improved tech they already invented. You will always come off second best and will forever look the fool ... so JUST try to enjoy Kinect eh? Microsoft are bound to pile millions into developing games for it and clearly you'll all LOVE that future.

So keep on buying those Kinect2 games and MS will cater to your needs more and more. If you suddenly find yourself feeling a little left out when we Sony fans are discussing the large library of exclusive core/hardcore games, just wait for the MOVE/PSEye2 games to be announced and post your 'Sony copied' remarks. It won't change reality but it may just help salve your waning spirits. Enjoy.

MikeMyers4792d ago

"So, what exactly is wrong with Godmars290 thinking? I'm also happy with the PSEye2 as long as it's optional. If optional means I can't then use sales for flag waving, I don't really care. What I DO care about is having a choice."

Even if it's optional you know they will be throwing resources behind it. Sony seems to manage it better than the other two. We seen Move titles come out while Sony still keeping it;s main focus on hardcore games. If Move had sold much better I imagine they would have shifted more focus to it. I expect the PS4 camera to have a larger role in the upcoming system. Not as much as we've seen with Kinect but more than we saw with Move.

"I don't care that certain franchises on the PS3 didn't sell as many copies as certain franchises on the 360, I just care that they are great games or that there are far more of them."

First off you should care. Sony closed some of those studios and if we continue to see games like Twisted Metal not sell that well chances are we will see less of them. Remember, Sony also has to show profits at the end of the day. They will be much more frugal going forward than they were on the PS3.

"And why is it that so many people feel it necessary to start the 'who copied who' nonsense yet again."

It's just noise like a lot of comments on here. They all copy one another while trying to put their own brand on top of it. Doesn't matter. What does matter is who does it better and makes the most use of it. Did Apple invent the portable music player? No but they managed to make it more appealing and do it in a way that people enjoyed.

"So keep on buying those Kinect2 games and MS will cater to your needs more and more. Enjoy."

That really sounds quite immature and quite frankly, narrow-minded. All of this MS fans and Sony fans is just a bunch of rhetoric. We're all fans of gaming so all of these categories were created just to make people feel special. When you look at the hundreds of games on the PS3 and the hundreds of games on the Xbox 360 are you honestly going to tell me there is a huge difference in gamers? Most of them play the same, most of them look the same, most of them cost the same. In fact most of them really are the same. I never understood how one gamer can say I love Killzone and Gran Turismo but I don't like Halo and Forza. To them it's almost black and white. That's not being a gamer, that's being a slave to brand recognition.

I don't think Sony is doing a whole lot of motion gaming, to be honest. This camera is mostly being used for additional features and easier access to things within games and apps.

There will obviously be fitness and sports games for it, but I think their main focus is to give hardcore gamers more accessibility.

-Alpha4794d ago

I like the ability to sign me in based on recognition, and I really like voice recognition! I wonder if that can be used in-game, Skyrim on Kinect is really cool for that.

One thing I'm worried about is using the camera to taunt. It's going to be Omegle for PlayStation, if you know what I mean.

AngelicIceDiamond4793d ago

Response to your first comment and this one.

"This is how do you a motion camera...for the hardcore audience."

Get this MS had a terrible year with Kinect last year getting 30 and 40 ratings on the Metacritic scale. Low sales that didn't make MS money besides the hits, Just dance, Kinect Sports Kinectimals. The only thing that works with Kinect is the dash navigation and those handful of games I mention.

So what you just said can easily apply to MS next gen. MS will implement Kinect in a different way. The way they are doing it now isn't working. So why would MS support the same failing strategy next gen?

WeAreLegion4793d ago

That's very true. MS could easily adopt this strategy, as well.

hesido4793d ago

-Alpha: Maybe the video taunts are reserved for people in your social circles and people you have in your list, like your full name. I am hoping so, because I don't think I want to be "omegled".

Its different then kinect thats for sure & the reason I dig it is because a controller is better use for these features. There is no way that playing a fps game will feel more comfortable without a controller thats why I think sony is taking the right direction with using a controller.

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele14d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk14d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10115d ago (Edited 15d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit14d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg14d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10114d ago (Edited 14d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14914d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle27d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit27d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog28d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog27d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad28d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_28d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage28d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection
