How can Microsoft compete with Sony next gen?

MMGN: It's been just over a month since Sony dazzled the gaming world with the reveal of their next-generation PlayStation 4 console, and all eyes are now on Microsoft as we await their next move - and by next move I mean, well, the announcement of their own next-gen console.

It'll be interesting to see what Microsoft's console will provide. I really hope all those rumors about DRM and blocking used games aren't true. I would NEVER own any console that blocked used games. Not that I buy used too often, but taking that option away is just not cool.

Yi-Long4801d ago (Edited 4801d ago )

... I started this generation as a fan of the first Xbox, bought and loved the 360 for a long time, and the PS3 was my very first Sony console...

However, MS kinda lost me 3-4 years ago when they shifted their focus from cool new original IPs to Kinect and dashboard apps. Sadly.

Sony on the other hand started this generation pretty 'meh', but the last few years they really picked up the ball that MS dropped and ran with it.

They kept their focus on GAMES, which is all I really want in a console. And their PSN+ is just a much better deal than XBL Gold (to me at least), so I haven't renewed XBL anymore.

MS has managed to lose me as a fan, while Sony has actually slowly won me over these last few years. And if the rumours about the new Xbox are true, with always online crap and stuff like that, then I'm simply not interested.

I'll go for a Steambox instead of a 360 next gen, and most likely a PS4 as well. Plus hopefully OUYA (Android) will get the indie-support, cause the only thing that's still really REALLY great about the 360, is XBLA, but I can see those developers leavinG MS in favor of more freedom and a larger install-base that is Android.

AngelicIceDiamond4801d ago

Well MS lost allot of, well "internet" fans in the last 2 years. Any year before 2011 they had they offered exclusives.

All MS really needs to do is present brand new games and revamp its online offerings. And they'll do fine to be honest.

MS silence could be a good thing. Nobody knows what they're doing or how they're preparing for it.

I technically will make my choice when Sony and MS talk about the console further.

Despite what the internet may think I'm looking forward to the next box presentation.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr34801d ago

They can start by announcing THEN showing the console. Yeah, I think that's a good start, lol.

SilentNegotiator4801d ago (Edited 4801d ago )

They may as well push Kinect harder. If Nintendo thinks that it's a good idea (somehow) to not go after the casual and non-gamer market again, SOMEONE might as well make lots of money from that audience.

ALLWRONG4800d ago (Edited 4800d ago )

"MS kinda lost me 3-4 years ago when they shifted their focus from cool new original IPs to Kinect and dashboard apps"

Strange seeing the 360 is really the only console that had traditional core games like Halo and Forza released in 2012, and Gears so far in 2013. God of War is the only real core game for the PS3 since 2011, unless you want to count Journey and Battle Royal as core games.

I know how you Sony guys love to pretend you have more games, and more exclusives, but in the really real word that's not true. https://www.google.com/

I also find it funny how you trash apps when all those same apps can be found on competing consoles. You also trash Kinect while you "conveniently" ignore the fact that Sony copied it. (sorry guys but PS eye is just a web cam with no infra red motion tracking and 3D camera)

I know this kinda truth isn't aloud here so click away.

I used to never have $$ issues buying a game day one.
But ever since all games come with DLC/season pass now I just hold on to my money with games I'm on the fence with....I rather have only AAA games with all three DLC's.
and for the games I didn't buy new I wait for a used copie....and if I do end up enjoying the game, I'll get most of its DLC.
I don't like where developers took it, I would gladly buy more games.
But I fell they have forced my hand too much.
(Example Battlefieidl premium) I regret buy the season pass, should of just got the last 2 DLC. :/

showtimefolks4801d ago (Edited 4801d ago )

Simple they can compete by

Offering identical pricing
Similar or better specs
Games
Games
And did I mention games
Free to play on xblive
A service like PSN plus
Forget about kinect

With Sony signing so many deals with 2nd party studios for exclusives besides their owned studios MS needs to bring their A game. Also if PSN remains free while freeing all the features and cross game chat than why is xblive worth $60?

NO DRM
No always ONLINE

But knowing MS they will show smart glass, bunch of stuff for kinect and confirm next halo and forza

It's time to step your game up MS Marcus PSP lol remember those commercials

josephayal4801d ago

PC's have a constant online connection and 99.99% of games now require you to be signed in to some form of system such as Steam or Origin in order to play them

ICECREAM4800d ago

And that's why people buy consoles.

boldstarr4801d ago

How they can compete with PS4?
just bring the Window 8 pre installed, then maybe they can equal or win next gen, otherwise im all in for PS4. Sony bloodline is flowing in my veins.

EVILDEAD3604800d ago

In my opinion, fan blogger sites like this one get it wrong when it comes to Next Gen.

They want MS to abandon everything that made them successful this gen to become carbon copies of the PS3/PS4.

That formula is exactly why the 720 would fail horribly, if somehow MS lost their brains and blindly followed Sony's every move.

In my opinion, MS not only needs to contimue what made them successful, they need to double down on everything from the franchises to Xbox Live to Kinect.

The Xbox Live experience has always been the killer app for the 360 gen. 20 million strong currently. MS always led in this area this gen, but they need to improve Live in a truly meaningful way for it to prosper. MS literally does not have to follow PSN+ in any way to continue push the envelope of the Live capabilities.

MS already has cloud incorporated this gen, but the really Killer app would be backwards compatability for current Live members and that 20 million+ will be have a huge incentive to upgrade within the MS ecosystem.

MS already had huge success with Halo and some of it's major franchises and it's clear MS invested heavily into new IPs If those games gain the same types of support from the install base that Halo and Gears have had, then the next gen will be equally successful.

Kinect was a huge win for MS as it not only sold Kinect as a peripheral, it has and still is a major reason the 360 has sold to this day.

If Kinect 2.0 really is a big improvement, then MS should absolutely support and push it in a significant way. Even Sony is doublig down on Move as we saw Media Molecule exclaim their love and support for Move.

What MS got right when compared to Sony is adding a Blu-ray in every console. This was a major reason many bought the PS3 in the early days and like me there are millions who use the PS3 as their main Blu-ray player.

If MS has a great E3, doubles down on what made them successful last ,end the silly rumor myths, and show off a powerful system that outclasses the 360 in every way then they have a chance to equal the success they had this gen.

Just my humble take

Lee

Rip-Ridah4800d ago (Edited 4800d ago )

Being a Playstation supporter myself, I have to say that that was a well written opinion. I gave you an agree click because "most" of what you said was logical. However, I disagree with you on "MS always led in [online gaming] this gen..." Imo. the experiences of DCUO, MAG, LBP 1 & 2, Free Realms, PS HOME, Web Browsing, game sharing, PS+, free acces to all apps, amongst other perks made the PSN lead for many this gen.

These are experiences, moreso than conveniences imo, that no other system offered in most cases. Sure, it could be more convenient to have the streamlined interface that Live offered the 360, but those were mainly conveniences that could be remedied in other ways. (eg. Cellphone, PX5 Headset, Skype, etc.) People may prefer things one way, while others are satisfied with another. I see nothing wrong with that at all. Opinions aren't facts (mine included) which is why we may respectfully disagree with one another on this point.

The original Xbox was an amazing console and so was the Xbox 360 for a few years but MS has contracted Kutaragi arrogance. At the start of this gen MS made Krazy Ken and co. eat humble-pie. Sony digested that pie and came out a changed company, they have done so much good in the last 5 years. With success MS is now like Sony was in 2005. They are arrogant and seem to be loosing interest in the GAMER. Its those gamers that made the Xbox 360 a success that are starting to get fed up with Microsoft. I hope these Xbox Durango rumors are not true but if they are I hope MS fall really hard and realize that the Xbox should be a Game console and not a set-up top box with an arm-flailing recognition system.

TXIDarkAvenger4801d ago

Very well said compared to all the other biased comments posted here. Its cool having entertainment features but its important to not lose sight of gaming which should be the consoles focus.

Nathaniel_Drake4801d ago (Edited 4801d ago )

If you know why the Xbox was built you can now say they are going back to their roots and trying to be living room entertainment as opposed to just a gaming console. Watch pachter's latest vid on gametrailers and he explains it better. I usually disagree with him 99% of the time but he does make some good points about this

Jakens4800d ago

Each of you here with a 360 should invest in LIVE until the end of the year in case MS wants to reward those with LIVE. I might just be talking smoke, but I really want to believe that MS will reward a little loyality.

Why o why4801d ago (Edited 4801d ago )

more games less apps and kinect AND unleash the sleeping ips like crimson skies killer instincts etc. Rely less on 3rd parties and spend some of that live money on more 1st 2nd party made ip's.

The 360 was much stronger in its earlier years and is a real success story but ms cannot rest on their laurels and become complacent or risk being labeled arrogant like sony was (in some peoples eyes anywa)y. The bait n swicth probably wont work again.. Some, not all but some, will want to see where ms's focus lie. Thats my honest opinion

maniacmayhem4801d ago

How about more games, more apps and more use for Kinect?

Why can't there be a great balance of all?

Why o why4801d ago

perfect word.... 'balance' with that nobody could really worry , moan or troll but their actions over the last few years have displayed a distinct lack of that so it suggests MS either cant or chooses not to cater to both simultaneously whilst relying on 3rd parties to fill more of the gaps.

Maybe they dont like the risks, both in cost and resources, of developing new hi tech graphics engines that many core type games use apposed to the ones kinect games use especially if they dont sell big numbers. With kinect games, just from their general simplicity, they're less of a risk PLUS ms supported the crap out of its new device which is nothing to be scoffed at but alas...some of their core were left wanting. Almost led to believe that there was a super slowdown on high end games because a new gen was beckoning when in actual fact the opposite is achievable.

maniacmayhem4801d ago

But we already know they have new studios working on 4 new core IP's. There's a rumor of a Fable MMO, not to mention as you suggested great support from third parties.

Every console near the end of it's cycle slows down it's 1st studio games. The illusion that sony isn't is only because they delayed a lot of their games from last year to be released this year. But from NES, Genesis all the way to even the Wii you can see this is normal.

I'm not saying that MS doesn't need games, I would love a proper Perfect Dark and a Crackdown but I do enjoy and use their apps. Especially Youtube, HBOGo and Hulu.

If their next Kinect can actually do what was promised years ago then I might also get on board with that.

Ducky4801d ago

They're gonna need more Usher.

aksmashh4801d ago (Edited 4801d ago )

zebramocha4801d ago

Jek_Porkins4801d ago

Gee, we haven't heard a single fact about the next Xbox and yet here we are trying to ask the question if it can compete? That is kind of crazy in my opinion, especially since we haven't seen the PS4, gotten a price or release date and actually still know very little about that console as well...

jslash4801d ago

If you'd taken the time to read my article, it's not a matter of IF it can compete, but the ways in which it can.

CommonSenseGamer4801d ago

Your post is all based on rumours and your own fears of how those rumoured features may be used. Those features may end up being really great to ensure real diversity and wider consumer appeal. We simply don't know yet.

CommonSenseGamer4801d ago

Gamers are waiting...fanboys who never intend on buying one have already made up their mind and will now just attack, attack, attack! Why, because they think they're on some damned crusade that will actually change an outcome they have no control over anyway.

superterabyte4801d ago (Edited 4801d ago )

o/

Not intending on buying one because everything Microsoft has released over the the last few years has been pure unadulterated sh*te. there was windows 7 but then windows 8 came.

Paying for XBL when games are usually PTP.
I'll stick to PlayStation plus thanks

/o

Hicken4801d ago (Edited 4800d ago )

We know enough to speculate. We know what Sony's intentions are, so we can assume the price will be reasonable. We don't have an exact date, but we DO know it'll be out for the holidays. We don't know what it looks like, but we know Sony doesn't exactly make ugly consoles.

... and we know that doesn't really matter. It's just a weak-ass excuse you and others have come up with.

We know that, overall, Sony's had a continued focus on core gaming, even while expanding to have offerings for the casual crowd.

We also know Microsoft's focus, which is centered far more around casual gaming and providing app-based entertainment. We have rumors from the same source that was almost spot-on with the PS4's specs. Does that lend them no credibility?

Because of what we DO know about Sony's console and direction, we can speculate about what Microsoft will need to do to be competitive. That's all this article is doing.

I fail to see how this is a problem.

Edit: Thank you for proving you couldn't DISPROVE anything I said by not even bothering to TRY.

Jek_Porkins4801d ago

You fail to see it because you're a biased PS3 fanboy with one bubble?

Your whole statement is flawed, you backpedal and assume a lot of things, so glad Strongman finally got the boot, now if they'd only kick you to the curb too. You have never said a positive thing about anything Microsoft, you manage to get one bubble in a site run by Sony kiss asses...

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose16d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE16d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername16d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy16d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde16d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8616d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8616d ago (Edited 16d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.
