Vista Shootout: Hotfixes vs. SP1

The Web has been abuzz with chatter about Windows Vista's upcoming Service Pack 1 (SP1): What it will and will not fix, how it will affect performance, how long will it take to install, and so on. PC manufacturers, some journalists, and a great deal of torrent addicts already have the service pack, and ExtremeTech is among that crew.

While there are lots of things to write about SP1, the first thing ExtremeTech is going to focus on is performance. Sure, security is important as is compatibility, but ExtremeTech is hoping SP1 turns Vista into the screaming speed demon Microsoft once seemed to suggest it would be. Of course, when ExtremeTech says performance, they're mainly talking about games, but they checked out other areas in which it supposedly improves the Vista experience as well.

what people don't know is that SP1 has nothing new to offer it only offers hot fixes and two tweaks "Performance" and "reliability" you can get those two fixes from microsoft's page.

Windows updates only slow PCs down.
We have seen this with earlier WIN Versions why would Vista be any different?
Soon i have to doubble my 4gt ram

danarc6654d ago

Im guessing by 4gt ram, you mean 4gb of RAM?

You will need 64-bit Vista for that, and that's even worse than the 'usual' Vista (32-bit)...

"Why cant ms make anything right from the start?

Typical ignorant fanboy BS. I guess the dozens of firmware updates Sony has made for the PS3/PSN since launch are normal and acceptable, in your biased vision. :o MS...like ANY product mfr, continues to make improvements/enhancements, well after releasing products. If you REALLY BELIEVE this is something only MS does, you're truly pathetic.

NOBODY gets things 100% right the first time on ANYTHING.

PumPum6655d ago

What does sony have to do with this?
Why did you drag the consoles in to this?
Looks like you are the fanboy.

I agree that nothing is perfect but it seems like MS does more mistakes than anybody else.
Personally i like Vista more than XP but i dont want updates that slows down my PC or any useless crap on it.

THWIP6655d ago

You know damn well your comment was no more than an anti-MS slam, and typical of a Sony fanboy. If you truly AREN'T one...you might as well be. Regardless, my point still stands: You're a biased fool....

"I agree that nothing is perfect but it seems like MS does more mistakes than anybody else"

See that? That's called an ignorant, biased statement...which TYPICALLY means you're a fanboy. Try taking off those blinders for a change.

For the record, I own a Sony 55" Wega HDTV (3 y.o.); it's given me problems since about a year in, and it died on me last week. By comparison, my day-1 launch 360 has given me ZERO problems, and I've logged about 20 hrs/week on it for over 2 years. If I were an ignorant fanboy, I'd rush to judgement and say Sony only makes junk, and MS components are made better....but I'm not, so I don't. :o

THWIP6655d ago

Yet ANOTHER typical fanboy response. Thanks for the suggestion...but I've been married for 9 1/2 years, and getting "laid" is not really a concern, or priority. :o

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing31d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9231d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit31d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing31d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9230d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
