Video Game Face Off: BioShock vs. Killzone

After crashing into the ocean, Jack, the playable protagonist in BioShock, descends in a bathysphere to the underwater ‘utopia’ of Rapture. In that opening scene, not a single bullet flies. Instead of highlighting the fact that this is another shoot-now, ask-questions-never affair, BioShock carefully introduces its nuanced world and intricate philosophy through a simple slideshow presented by Andrew Ryan.

I wonder why the author picked the Killzone series as the archetypical FPS, with which to go against Bioshock. Never mind the fact that one is multiplatform, and the other is exclusive to the PS3 (fanboy alert!).

Surely the typical FPS is COD. Heck if you are going to do an objective head-to-head comparison, you would use games with the same or similar game design principles.

Bioshock vs Dishonoured for example. Both games are designed with game mechanics to give the player choice. Both games therefore have multiple endings with which to display the choices the player has made.

To compare a game designed with choice as it's core mechanic, with a game that is designed to be a linear experience, is really to show your inexperience as a game journalist; not to mention a complete lack of understanding of the different types of first person shooters out there.

Either that, or your actually just after the fanboy hits, which is a shame, 'cos you could start some really interesting discussions. Instead of opting for cheap fanboy hits.

Bioshock is about you against everyone else and exploring this places in B1 and Infinite.
Killzone is a war between 2 nations which have 300 year old histoy and good reason to hate each other.
One has magic powers and a different world and one doesn't have or can't have magic powers and weird bosses because it's set in our world. our world 300 years in the future but it's trying to be realistic.

I like them both and this article is about getting hits.

Bioshock is one of my favourites franchises. I love all 3 games and have played each several times. I even have a room in my house that is loosely decorated around the theme of Bioshock (with a Lighthouse, coral models and postcards styled as though they are from both Rapture and Columbus).

And yet I am going to find it extremely difficult to get even remotely excited about any future episode in the series after all the problems this has had in its development cycle.

Leave the franchise alone. Remaster them again if you have to. Then put whatever talent you have to use on something brand new.

Furesis294d ago

Since ken levine isn't involved i'm not surprised what's going on. i'm more excited for his next game which looks like bioshock. Yet he still works under take2 and they are making bioshock 4 without him, strange situation.

toxic-inferno294d ago

Yes. Judas. Looks brilliant, but it's one of those games that seems to never have had a release date. Instead it's had release windows that keep getting pushed back.

Once it's ready, I'll be there for it though. Ken Levine is an excellent developer.

I get the feeling he dissolved Irrational Games simply so that 2k couldn't tell him what to do. It seems it will pay off, but I feel sorry for those who worked as part of Irrational before it was dissolved, who hadn't independently made a name for themselves.

ActualWhiteMan293d ago

He didn’t even want to make 2, that’s why they did it without him.

Rebel_Scum294d ago

tbh it wouldnt be a Bioshock game without development hell. They all had it.

Michiel1989293d ago

bioshock 2 was 2.5 years after 1, so much of a development hell it was......

-Foxtrot294d ago

"Remaster them again if you have to"

Well apparently they were doing a remake but that got cancelled

Relientk77294d ago

It sucks this game is in development hell because I love BioShock and would love a 4th game. I hope it turns out great, but I guess we'll see.

P_Bomb294d ago

Love Bioshock. It’s too bad what’s going on. At least we have Judas.

Yui_Suzumiya293d ago (Edited 293d ago )

It's been in development hell since 2014. This is nothing new. It saddens me because it's one of my favorite series. At this point, Judas may end up releasing first.

BABI-PANGPANG293d ago

Bioshock 4 (if it ever comes out) will probably still look and play like a Bioshock game, but without Kevin, it might miss that spark that made the originals so special. Honestly, Judas might end up feeling more like the real spiritual successor.

Helldivers 2 sparked renewed interest in Killzone. Do we deserve it?

Now, with most games these days, live service included, comes the inclusion of microtransactions. In Helldiver 2's case, these come in the form of Warbonds and the superstore. Some of them were a hit, others were a miss. But one of the superstore items that have sparked interest is the Killzone set. While this is nice, this would have much better served as a warbond. Putting it in the superstore comes off as greedy, but that's an issue for another video. More to the point, the Killzone franchise fanbase had taken note, and it sparked renewed interest in wanting the series to be revived.

lol well, as fans we'd naturally say that (yes myself included).

But given some of the complaints the series garnered over the years when it was available is why we asked it it was deserved

RaiderNation418d ago

I think it does. A complete reboot would be ideal with a better story and main protagonist. I love the asthetic of the Killzone universe, along with the premise of Earth warring with another planet of humanoid beings, and Earth possibly being the antagonists. They just need to develop a good main protagonist and have better writing. A Killzone reboot in the latest version of the Decima engine would be incredible.

Abear21418d ago

If it makes dollars it makes sense, that’s how these decisions are made.

Clearly Sony or whoever makes this decision isn’t convinced Killzone would sell enough to support the cost of development. They also have a hit with Horizon that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and prints money.

JunonZanon418d ago

A trilogy remaster with KZ2 MP would be a good start

Cacabunga417d ago

With Move and sharpshooter support? I can dream!

lodossrage417d ago

considering the time we live in, it would more than likely get a VR option to replace the move support

Jingsing418d ago

Not unless they come up with some amazing marketing campaign otherwise it will just perform as bad as Halo these days.

Killzone composer would love a remaster trilogy, “don’t know if a new game” would be successful

Killzone and Horizon Zero Dawn composer Joris de Man would like PlayStation to make a remaster trilogy, but not a new game.

Id like a remaster trilogy and the ps vita version remastered as well. It should also have killzone 2 multiplayer

Cacabunga423d ago

Yes make them start with KZ2 multiplayer remake as standalone!! I would play the carp out of it.

INMATEofARKHAM423d ago

Knowing Sony and how the Uncharted remasters shipped without their MP components they'll likely do the same with Killzone.

Outside_ofthe_Box423d ago

Then there's no point in remastering it imo. KZ2's MP was the best thing about Killzone.

Knightofelemia424d ago

I'd day one a remaster trilogy I'd even day one a remaster trilogy or Resistance as well.

GamingManiac422d ago

Same! But with KZ2 and R2 multiplayer!

JEECE423d ago

I'm glad they stopped making Killzone before people started saying "mid," so I am spared seeing all the braindead "Killzone is actually mid" takes that people inevitably would have offered up in lieu of legitimate analysis.

INMATEofARKHAM423d ago

They were mid, tbh. Just the best Sony put out in the 1st person/exclusive department.

RedDeadLB423d ago

I don't know about that. They weren't the greatest shooters out there, sure, but nothing even came close to the atmosphere of 2 and 3. The feeling of weight, the animations, the style, the multiplayer and the trophies made it one hell of a game. All shooters are in essence point and shoot, but few make you feel the way Killzone made you feel while doing it.

senorfartcushion423d ago

They will cast a woman on one of the lead roles, just like how they did it in the past, but toda's nerds will find an excuse to be angry about it.

ibrake4naps423d ago

It should be a crime that they didn't put out a version of part 2 that supports their VR headset. A no-brainer...
