If the PlayStation Network is free of charge, what is stopping someone from cheating all the time or spewing hate speach? If they get banned, they'll just open another free account. At least with a pay to play system, people are less likely to cheat or hate because of the financial hit they'll receive if they lose their online privilages. Does anybody know what Sony will do to combat this?

I wonder how this is going to work with the Xfire service that is in the works..... If they allready have a robust online plan why do they need Xfire at all?

I was expecting more, they seem to have a lot of stuff that is good, which makes it way better than ps2, but XBL seems still to be way ahead.

Okay. That is just one game. How are 10 games of Resistance going to be at one time? How about a 100? Now throw in another game. And another game. My only point is we have no idea how well the online component will play until they let ALL of the gamers on during a normal day.

But to be online is a different story. The moment someone step up with DSL,or plays a from across seas knowing this game don't have Plenty and dedicated servers its going to lag the whole sh1t up.

This is pretty good information on the service and it seems like its a lot better than the PS2 one. Not quite to Live!'s level in my opinion, though only when the service is actually launched will we know its full functions, security, content and any lag issues. It's about time this information was released, it's like a month to launch!

It sounds a little more complex in this discription than using Live! but I presume it will be simple when it is actually in front of you.

also looking at this article xfire seems to be sony's answer to Live! Anywhere, not Live!

i note the video and voice chat won't be available at launch but is planned, and demos reside in the sony store- will people have to pay for demos?

I read the entire article, and I didn't see to find the most important part of any online game service. match making. I honesly can care less about them having a market place like xbox live where you can access content. This is also free on xbox live. XBox live also allow you to send text and voice and communicate using camara and video. But what about the freaken online match making... So, as far as I am concern this article fails to mention the most important part that would make this service the xbox killer as sony fanboys say, free online play.
I also notice, that when someone send you a message or they login; you get to see it while playing a game; but can't interact with them. So, how is this better then xbox live? Why do I have to quit the game to reply?

It's seems to be shaping into a semi-OS configuration... Or... an overly done Media Centre...

I'v read a while back MS's coming out with advanced Spectator modes and Movie channel blades. Point being i don't think we've seen a XBL killer here, XBL isn't done evolving either is the software. I think MS is waiting/holding back to add to XBL until Sony comes with it.

most of the tech we use comes from not just science,but science fiction.star trek for example has been used a lot.we now have people with chips in their heads,bionic limbs and people using computers while being paralized,walking/stair climbing robots like asimo,actroids(i'f you haven't seen them,check them out).what i'm trying to say is that ps3's online,even if it's basic at the beginning will get better because of what that chip can do.i'm not saying judgement day is coming,but don't count that chip out when it's main fuction is to side step moore's law and lead to everything using multiple chips at once(including 360 using multiple chips) from offline to online to networking.ps3 is small potatoes.the future is coming.all they need now is bio-computers.

PNP is shaping up to a great service and although beeing late to the party, it's doing some things better than Live:

I always knew if Sony can offer a service that is comparable to PC using Xfire, then Live doesn't stand a chance. It's just not worth the fee. The moste important features like friends list, chat etc. we get coupled with FREE multiplayer gaming:

WOW thanks Sony for not milking your customers. MS fanboys were claiming we won't get free multiplayer gaming. It appears just another MS rumour like thousands other bites the dust.

But the best feature that will utterly destroy Live wasn't mentioned here cause they didn't talk about games:
The user created conted that PS3 buyers will get for FREE. It's the best feature from PC online. Sony is just taking the best of both worlds to utterly destroy Live. User created content totaly enhance and raises the value of a game. People buy for example UT2007 and user created content will make a WW2 shooter or what ever out of it. Any heard of Counter Strike? The most popular team based FPS multiplayer game? In case you didn't know it, this game started as a mod(user created) for Half Life, but it became so popular that Valve made a full game out of it.
Mods are great. They enhance or totaly change the gameplay and if you like your original game so much you get with user created content tons of new, great maps. I got a link here for people that don't play PC multiplayer or doesn't believe what I'm saying:

its greats that ps3 fans get to do all these things now. i doubt sony often but i do believe that this is one thing they wont mess up because they cant afford to. although i do think the browser isnt needed. i have wanted one on my 360 but the more i think about it the more worthless its seems. it'll never happen, but if 360 and ps3 users could play each other online that would be incredible. maybe it would cause people to appreciate gaming a little more and not think about saying their console than the other is and whatnot

why would anyone who owns or plays xbox-live BE mad. We have our on-line games, we have assurance of it`s reliability, we know it works has worked and shall work every time. So don`t get excited till you all get the thing up and running. If it runs at all. The vid as far as you know could be a lan game. And a attempt by sony to quell your worry of a shotgun on-line setup. Meanwhile back on xbox-live!

Ok, people, lets get real here, and stop the bullsh!t, I play on Xbox live all the time, and I can tell you that its not perfect. Everybody crying about lag on the PS3, acting like there aint any on Xbox live, is either bullsh!tting or doesnt know what he is talking about, Quake4 is a laggy mess!, same thing with COD2 (even after they fixed it), BF2 also! PDZ (which is my favorite online game, I know, I know, alot of people hate it) also has alot of lag, especially when you have over 16 people. There is connection failures all the time. Before the last update, the demo's downloaded very slowly (they seemed to be capped), but it does seem better now (the "capping" either they stopped doing it or they raised it). People cheat on Xbox live all the time. I had a guy do it to me today on PDZ, where he was invisible hiding in the walls in our spawn room and he could kill us all as we appeared there, while we couldnt touch him. I will admit that xbox live is not nearly as laggy as most PC games, but thats because on the PC everybody and their mother is allowed (so you'll have a lot 56k-ers on there too, slowing things down to heir speeds). and Im not saying that the PS3's network will be any better/less laggy/problematic. But come on people, lets not act like Xbox live is perfect. Alot of time Im losing connection to the host, And my internet connection is perfect! I have no problems with my PC. And also, Final fantasy you have to pay extra for, to play it on top of the $50 yearly and Phanstasy Star also, so give it a break people, and stop acting like you's are defending mommy Xbox! And for anyone that thinks that having the Dashboard running in the background as such a great thing!? Its a "process" and its using up resources, its taking up a thread out of your 6, which btw arent being anywhere fully used yet, its eating up RAM, and taking up processing power. I would rather it not sit in the Memory but rather have it be called up and then loadedup into memory when activated, and then dumped out of the memory when done again. Its just bloating up the OS.

Xbox 360 is not a CPU its Focus is fully on playing games Period unlike a PC and PS3 that Keeps shoving a Blu-Ray Player down your throat.
Paying for Final Fantasy is stupid cause Square enix threw M$ a Bone on that one same as Sega With Phantasy star.FF was something to get more money for that lame title and step into Warcraft's money zone.

PDZ is Garbage online but great offline. All Day yesterday i Played 8 on 8 battles on halo 2 When it starts off i had a Bit of lag then after a couple of secs my sh1t clear up cause i hosted about 80 of the games i played and them sh1t played perfect.i Played DOA online for like a Hour or 2 had no laggy matches im from brooklyn and i play a kid from New orleans what happen no Lag then a Dude from Japan how that happened i don't know but it had a little lag that was playable cause i was playing against a Foreigner. On Uno i was Playing against a Dude from the Neitherlands and Seattle and they had there Cameras set up no lag and the Vision camera still work perfect.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
