Lost Odyssey - fixing a hole

The Brainy Gamer responds to Microsoft's misguided effort to make a Final Fantasy game for the Xbox 360:

"Lost Odyssey is what happens when the primary objective driving a game's creation is fixing a hole. Microsoft lacks a traditional hardcore RPG for the Xbox 360. Final Fantasy can't be purchased for all the money in Redmond, so Microsoft cherry-picks a few FF all-stars, bankrolls their new studio, and orders up a heaping helping of "epic."

More analysis and game description in the article.

this game is quite good, i enjoy it. and its us sales are above that than most ps3 games so... microsoft really didnt do too bad here...

InYourMom6645d ago (Edited 6645d ago )

I am really liking the game and I've never really been into JRPG's before. The blogger makes this sound like MS developed this game. He does know that the original creators of FF did it right?

He seems to have a hate for MS with all this personal commentary. The article is worthless and he provides no solid foundation for his complaints and it's more a rant than anything. Did he really say that MS built these guys their studio for them so they would make this game?

Robeezy6645d ago

I feel the same. I've only played one JRPG before and that was on the dreamcast (skies of arcadia i think). I figured i would give this one a chance and i'm really glad i did. The game is fantastic and a real work of art. I'm almost finished with the 3rd disc and can't wait for the 4th.

k2d6644d ago

The game is decent, but that one lead character is just too annoying.

When at first I heard about Sakaguchi leaving Squenix - I got really anxious.. but really, wasn't he was just the tip off the iceberg?
They have to let new talents step into the spotlight sometime, right?
We'll see how Square Enix manages come the time they release XIII.

wabashprof6645d ago (Edited 6645d ago )

Mistwalker Studio was started by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi in 2004 with the financial backing of Microsoft. This is a known fact.

InYourMom6645d ago

I stand corrected. I didn't realize that they were a 2nd party dev studio.

What a shame, I have a feeling every game they put out will be hated on simply because they are trying to do JRPG on the 360.

XBREAK3FIXME6645d ago

Hironobu Sakaguchi is a nobody now. If Microsoft wants a game like Final Fantasy on 360 they'll need Square-Enix, not some old loser that can't even make a decent game now. Just look at the reviews for Lost Odyssey. The word "flop" doesn't even begin to describe how badly this game failed. Final Fantasy XIII will mop the floor with Mistwalker's constant garbage.

v1c1ous6645d ago (Edited 6645d ago )

is that lost odyssey IS a decent game :/

and the review scores got skewed because of a bad review copy. if you want a good gauge of the game, try looking at it's high "user community" reviews. you know, from actual gamers playing the game.

did the gooch get back the magic, or did he get lucky after flunking on blue dragon?

only "Cry On" will tell

destroyah6645d ago

That is false. Lost Odyssey flopped with reviews because it tried nothing new and ended up being nothing more than mediocre. Want proof? Just READ the reviews written by trusted websites. Even GameSpot, a website full of pro-Microsoft douche bags rated it low. One of their complaints were the loading times, which was then confirmed that the copies they got had longer loading times than the retail version but even after removing that complaint from their review, the score stayed the same. Their MAIN complaints weren't loading times. It was game itself. It just sucks.

Jack Bauer6645d ago (Edited 6645d ago )

PLAY THE GAME, dont read reviews... if you liked FFX, then you'll love Lost Odyssey... thats why it got lower review scores, if it had been released in 2001 like FFX, then the reviews would be a whole lot different... doesnt differ from it being a great game...ask anyone who likes jrpgs and has actually played it, minus critics obviously cause as a critic, even i would give it about what it got, round low 8 high 7...looking at it critically.

v1c1ous6645d ago

because u played it right?

and when heavenly sword got a 7, that was deserved too right?

or rachet and clank?

at least i played ff12 all the way through before realizing "this ain't all that" but i give it merit.

but i'm just wasting my e-breath on deaf ears, just press that disagree button as hard as you can, it's all you do.

destroyah6645d ago

Heavenly Sword? Yep it did deserve 7's for how short it was. I rented it, I didn't buy it, FYI. Ratchet & Clank? The only "7.5" came from GameSpot. Everybody else gave it high 8's and 9's. Not like Lost Odyssey, where the majority of the reviews were 7 and below.

Here's LO. 79% http://www.metacritic.com/g...
Here's R & C. 88% http://www.metacritic.com/g...

And Final Fantasy XII? Square-Enix doesn't need your opinion. That game won game of the year like 6 times currently holds a 92% overall average on Metacritic. Not just that, but it sold over 6 million copies. Just because you turn-based fanboys expected it to be some old school garbage that tries nothing new like Lost Odyssey doesn't mean it deserves a low review, which is why it DIDN'T get low reviews. Again, 92% and over 6 million copies sold.

You 360 fanboys better just keep hoping for Mistwalker to make a game that doesn't flop. Hironobu's wasting his time with M$. Not that anybody should even care, after looking at his games lately.

grilledgorlupa86645d ago (Edited 6645d ago )

You know reviews are actually important to many of us who dont have unlimited funds and time to play/try every ok game. Reading the reviews for LO not only did I save myself $60 I also saved myself $350 for not buying the system too.

Some of us actually read the review itself to get an idea if it is not only worth the money but also the time playing the game. If I wanted to play a pretty good turned based JRPG game that was challenging I probably get Persona 3 and in this case I am.

RecSpec6645d ago

@3.6

I have to admit, the buzz surrounding LO was pretty intense for awhile, of course if that buzz doesn't last, it's nothing.

Most are rehashes and yet Sony tools can't get enough of them. Lost
Odyssey is an improvement on FF.

destroyah6645d ago

Most Final Fantasy games suck and yet here they are being the most praised JRPG's in the history of gaming. Each major Final Fantasy game sold over 6 million copies. Each Final Fantasy currently holds 90%+ in overall reviews. Yes, Final Fantasy sucks and yet no other developer that makes JRPG's has been able to match the quality that Square-Enix puts out.

Cry on, 360 owner. Wake me up when Mistwalker makes a game that doesn't flop. Lost Odyssey looks like western garbage that uses the Unreal Engine.

JoelR6645d ago (Edited 6645d ago )

How?
I mean how is it an improvement?

v1c1ous6645d ago

pretty much nullified any worth his comments might have with that last post :/

lol @ thinking only FF rpgs are good.

v1c1ous6645d ago

LO is not an improvement to FF.

it has a lot of rough spots, and has a lot of tried-and-true formulas. doesn't take a lot of chances, so it comes as a really old school form.

however, it is still an entertaining rpg and the best jrpg on a next gen console recently (so far?), and the one upside it has over the last cpl of FF games is the emotional storytelling and character development.

myabsolution6645d ago

the reviews definately dont do this game justice....

hell, when do game reviews ever truely do games justice? play it for yourself and find out!

Lost Odyssey is a fantastic J-RPG. Im glad Microsoft is trying to please everyone not just shooters. They are creating a great library and hopefully Mistwalker will continue to produce excellent quality games like the last two.

I have four words:

Letters from a Weakling

raWfodog180d ago

I bought an XB360 to play this game. I also played other gems like Blue Dragon, Gears of War, and ES: Oblivion but Lost Odyssey was the precursor and one of the best jRPGs ever.

Redgrave180d ago

How do we resurrect it and get it remastered?

raWfodog179d ago

I would definitely buy that. They remake and remaster a bunch of stuff we don't need/want but they let the really good stuff sit on the shelf collecting dust.

What these games need are remasters and to modern platforms. They're all unfortunately stuck on the 360.

MrBaskerville230d ago

They are available on series x as well. But would be nice to get them out even wider.

babadivad230d ago

You can play them on console. I have them loaded on my machine.

MrNinosan230d ago

Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and FFXIII Trilogy is actually the only reason I still have my Series X.

Terry_B231d ago

Hey Phil..Why didn't remasters and pc ports happen many years ago already?

ABizzel1230d ago

Because Phil and team seem to enjoy going to websites and forums to see what fans are discussing and wanting, to earn good faith points with post like this while they continue to offer the bare minimum.

TheEroica230d ago (Edited 230d ago )

Remastered and remake games are lame... A gigantic "we don't know how to evolve original thoughts" from dev teams cashing in on old ip.... Make new stuff or gtfo.

neutralgamer1992230d ago (Edited 230d ago )

no remasters and remakes provide those games to new audiences and improve the look/gameplay

Michiel1989230d ago

you can't revive what never lived

-Foxtrot231d ago

Then…remaster / remake them

🤷🏻‍♂️

After renewed interest you can get Mistwalker to do a sequel to Lost Odyssey

jambola230d ago

Poor Microsoft could never scrape together funds to make that happen

babadivad230d ago

Is Mistwalker still a studio?

I liked blue dragon more. Lost odyssey is the shit though.

jznrpg825d ago

Two of the few games I still own for Xbox360 . I have Magna Carta 2 , Last Remnant but also have the PS4 version so I may have got rid of it and I have the DS version of Blue Dragon. I think and a few others but I forget what they are since I don’t dust them off. that’s about it.

shinoff2183825d ago (Edited 825d ago )

Another one I still havent got to try is infinite undiscovery. I read it was pretty linear but I usually fk with tri ace(star oceans are great).

Really my only issue with lost odyssey was the level cap they hit you with throughout the game. I enjoy just relaxing and doing some grinding every once in awhile. Could've atleast given the option. Other then that. Excellent game.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The 360 imo had atleast half or more that Gen of being the better jrpg system. I bought one earlier then I normally would have for some, and Alan wake. Japanese devs really got in their feelings that Gen and dropped the ball(thanks Phil phish, cocky ass ign, etc)

darthv72824d ago

You'd be better off playing Lost Odyssey on an XBO or Series X as no disc swapping and it looks and plays much better. Same with Blue Dragon. I still keep my 360 hooked up for games not on the bc list. for everything else, I use the series x now. Just last night I installed arkham origins as there is no 8th gen version like asylum/city.

I love having bc on xbox one/series hardware.

shinoff2183824d ago

Darth

When I bought the the Xbox one off a couple worker. That was the first thing indid. Bought blue dragon and lost odyssey. Been waiting to catch infinite undiscovery on sale but I forget to check.

I used to own the 360 versions but I bought these digital. I'd like to track down the 360 ones again but no huge deal. I was actually playing through lost odyssey waiting for starfield to drop.

RaidenBlack824d ago

Is Lost Odyssey coming to PS, too?

cthulhucultist825d ago

The game was indeed amazing. Great characters, gameplay and story!

But the dream sequences penned by Shigematsu were sublime.

I still remember many of these stories and I have integrated in the past in my D&D campaign many years ago.

RpgSama825d ago

I'm not going to lie, I cried on more than on a couple of them

Dabigsiebowski825d ago

Microsoft should have just kept pumping money into these guys. Same with a lot of the other studios... the blundered hard.

Lost Odysee deserved a franchise even though development wasn't smooth

Michiel1989825d ago

Am I the only one who doesn't wanna see every good game get sequel after sequel? It was a great game, but sometimes it's better to just make a one off and then create a new universe. Sadly that costs a lot more money and publishers don't wanna risk it, but I would definitely prefer it

shinoff2183825d ago

I'm fine with sequels in jrpgs, even in the vain of ff sequels, all new stories and characters. It does get old in other genres though sometimes. For the most part I just game by game basis it all.

FinalFantasyFanatic824d ago

They could have done it like Final Fantasy, kept the title name and just start with a new world/characters, it's not like the creator isn't familar with that.

Concertoine825d ago

Idk, Japan never bit for Xbox despite their best efforts around this era. Mistwalker never exploded either, despite future partnerships with Nintendo whichhad a much better chance at success

BrainSyphoned825d ago

It's not like it has had any competition since 2007. Would really like to own the short stories from it in book form.

PapaBop824d ago

360 had some amazing JRPGs in it's early days, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia off the top of my head were all amazing games.

jznrpg825d ago (Edited 825d ago )

The problem with most MS games on 360 was they didn’t make the games they paid for them and that makes you less money in the long run and isn’t something you can continue to do especially with declining sales of consoles. MS should have been starting and growing studios from the beginning but they went for paid games and it leaves them without the knowledge and culture of making games.

shinoff2183825d ago

Good points. Never thought of that like that back then.

Sgt_Slaughter824d ago

Not to mention killing the Japanese market that had all sorts of crazy and fun releases up until 2009-2010. They could have gained momentum on Nintendo and kept that going into the Xbox One era, but decided to "unify" efforts and that all but ended their presents in the country. Now, PS4's outsell the Xbox Series S three years into the new system's life cycle, and the 2/3DS at one point was doing the same.
