Since when is it "sad" to try and keep your system competitive? They don't have a Blu-ray drive, so they have to try and 1-up the 40 GB PS3 somehow.

Really the "sad" part of it all. Is a majority of customers would not really know the "strengths" of each system and merely compare the HDD size. They would look at the 360 with a 60 and the PS3 with a 40 and "assume" the 360 is a better value since it has a bigger HDD for less money. The advantage for MS being that this kind of customer would likely be unaware of PS3's Blu Ray capability.

Big companies know things like this and will exploit it. So yes this is exactly what they are doing, and yes it is a smart marketing move.

Yeah, you know I think a customer would buy a 1 GB hard drive, or no hard drive later upgradeable, that is totally cured from any defects of the present problems than a higher HDD drive capacity

The PS3 needs to install 5GB for 25 minutes on games to have loading speeds just as fast as the 360 does because of a megaslow loading BluRay drive... I guess format pushing from Sony wasn't the best future proof choice, is it?

The 360 thus needs less HDD space. I have the 20GB version and its enough for demo's/video's etc. After some time I delete the old demos if I bought the game or the demo sucks.

Thus: you fail. The PS3 has a slow BluRay drive and needs 5GB for some games to get normal loading speeds. So a 40GB PS3 is done after 6 games and some demos/videos added.

in a way im glad i got my ps3 early, when it was only 60 gig (which got) and 20 gig. and now theres so much available, b/c or no bc, x amount of gigs, arcade version, core, premium, elite.
it was one generation ago when we had one SKU and we stuck with it, until a few years down the line, a smaller and more efficient one came along.

I agree with you man but you've gotta think that more choices are usually better for the consumer. In this case with the 360 and PS3 it's the informed consumer who benefits the most, and the uninformed who get shafted.

HDD (expandable), Blu-ray, WiFi, USB ports, remote play, some sort of BC (even if it is only PS1 games), HDMI

i say we can. sorry, but too many SKUs just disrupts things. i dont know ANYONE with an elite. so how much money has MS pretty much chucked away by pushing it so much? money they could use to invest in new games. i know 1 person with a a core. and one person who bought an arcade. out of what, a good 30 people i know with 360s. and id say 50% of them have had RROD. about 20% have constant disk reading errors. some have outright jumped ship from 360 to ps3 because of the hassle. so i welcome them with open arms to the sony ship. only for them to find the differing SKUs a hassle to get through just to get a ps3.

MS has released the Falcon models, and is working on Opus, Jasper, and Valhalla. They are at least trying to fix the RROD problems, and they have even offered 3 year warranties. Besides RROD, I don't see any other problems the 360 has. It is a solid platform.

Well, sadly enough, MS still hasn't completely gotten rid of the RRoD. It's still popping up (although not as much due to better cooling hardware), but it isn't completely gone yet. I'd that we prolly won't see it completely gone until the new mobo's with 65nm GPU's are released... which will be late this year.

Premiums and Elites are the bread and butter of the 360 consoles. At this point, having a console without a harddrive doesn't make a lot of sense. The HDD needs to be standard for every console, whether its detatchable or not. If everyone is expected to have one, then game makers can use the hdd to their advantage. It could even make up for the lack of a blu-ray drive as far as games are concerened. For those that haven't gotten a HdD yet, they will just have to suck it up and buy one. And hopefully Microsoft can stop being so stubborn and make them at price competitive with others in the market.

actually i used to consider myself a 49er fanatic, or fanboy. I'm not the only one, lots of people do... Now i'm more a NFL fan. Same with games, i currently own a 360, but when the PS3 price drops, i will pick one up. I've owned PS1, PS2, Xbox, N64, etc...

yeah, i'll wait it out to buy a 360 since those functions will be added on later. man, they just keep on adding to catch up when ALL ps3's come with the same parts. some minus bc and 2 usb ports. but all the rest is the same and the HDD can be bought super cheap anywhere at any store.

I've got a launch and it pisses me off that I dont have hdmi (its died 2x but MS didn't send me any refurbs back with hdmi...tight bastards).
I'm also constantly deleting things on my 20GB HDD to make space for demos & video's. It sucks.
I also can't move my 360 between my livingroom and gaming room w/o moving my modem. That really sucks!
I just cant justify paying what MS wants for the 120GB HDD and the wi-fi add on. (rip-off!!)
Although, I still have plenty of space left on my PS3, its nice knowing that I can always upgrade my HDD w/o spending sh!t-tons of money doing so.

POG that surprisingly is a good point from you, yes this generation each console maker is offering us a lot of choice. However Microsofts "choices" seem to be offered just because their console was broken and did not offer stuff standard that the "more expensive" PS3 offered and really stuff that should have been standard to start with.(For example Wi-Fi, batteries for controller, larger HD, built in HD-DVD or Blu-Ray drive) I am just waiting for the Blu-Ray drive, wi-fi included, non RRODing, Xbox 360. However by then why wouldn't you just purchase a PS3?

MS should really approach toshiba about using the defunct hddvd format for games. It could still be useful even if movies are on blu. There are several consoles that had proprietary formtas. DC used GD_ROM, Cube used mini dvd, PCengine, nes, genesis all used different cart types.

MS could find a use for hddvd like sony found another use for their mini-disc. It was better suited for the mp3 age than it was the tape/cd age.

Sony ended up doing the same thing with Betamax. Although the VHS ended winning the home markets, Sony still made money on their format by juicing it up and issuing it out to professionals as Betacam in the mid 80's. It became the industry standard in television production for a decade, and is still used today in a lot of post-production.

I think it COULD possibly be a good thing for the next version of Xbox, but it putting it in now would be suicide for it. What developer would make a game that could only be played by a few hundred thousand out of the 17 million 360's around the world? Not to mention the huge consumer backlash from people who now possess decidedly inferior 360's.

But then again, even if MS did use the format, they would almost certainly have to include Blu-ray functionality, because many people (myself included) watch movies on their consoles. I think they'd probably sooner just license Blu-ray and pay Sony instead of continuing to have a perceived "gimped" product.

A complete redesign would be very costly. R@D isn't cheap, by any means. The last thing MS wants to do is pump a bunch of money into the 360 when they've just now started making money on it. Yeah, it would be good for consumers, but if MS continually lost money on consoles, then they'd eventually stop making one at all, and we'd be back to Sony vs Nintendo.

The only real choice they have is improving current cooling (which has happened), and wait for processor shrinks. It's the only way to fix the Red Rings without spending beau coup money. The CPU shrink occurred a few months ago, and now they're just waiting on the GPU shrink to occur later this year. After that, the 360 should be cool enough to run normally. I don't think that MS hates consumers as much as they've just hamstrung themselves with this.

As for the next round of consoles, who knows? MS is liable to try to jump out first to get the lead again, but they might also be more cautious because the Red Rings are a product of their hurrying.

Sony has done some copying of their own, so all is fair.

In terms of hardware, Sony has MS beat.. a much better machine for not a terrible lot more money. Now Microsoft is playing catch-up now that prices are down.

In terms of software, MS has Sony beat.. Live has been better. So now Sony has been upgrading PSN, and is adding Home later.

And as a footnote, Sony copied Nintendo, too. Nintendo introduces the Wii Remote, and then six months or so later, the PS3 mysteriously acquires tilt-sensing capability.

The only ones with any real originality have been Nintendo, as that was largely from necessity because they couldn't compete with what MS and Sony were bringing out.
