Biggest winner is Sony. Not just because of the money they'll get but because of taking a chance and going blu-ray with PS3 when they could have easily gone DVD.

Kudos Sony. This is why I continue to buy your consoles. You don't just give me more of the same; you're willing to take chances and give the consumer something new.

Microsoft may believe that paying Sony a royalty on every Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive doesn't make commercial sense, so it still may not appear on the console.

I would expect MS to feature Blu-ray in other ways instead...

MS also gains money from Sony via them paying to have Windows OS on their laptops. Its business, is MS's HDi (not sure if thats right) gonna be used in Blu-Ray for the extra features and the ability to update via the internet like HD-DVD had?

MS using Blu Ray drives is the same thing as Sony VAIOs using Windows.

It's a business world, and of course MS and Sony need to be business partners at times. It's just how it is.

Let's hope microsoft continues being successful so they can put more money in sony's pockets. :)

I have a question. Do this mean, that Sony will make money from every Blu-ray add-on that the 360 sells?

since the debut of the 360, microsoft said they would produce a blu-ray drive if/when the market called for it. and now that day has come, and they will be making one. microsoft was never married to the hd-dvd format, or they would have made it an internal drive instead of waiting for things to pan out and then producing a blu-ray drive add-on. so far there has not been a need for blu-ray for gaming, especially since the xbox can easily upgrade to dvd20s if the need is there for double the space, but the next generation xbox will most likely have one in it. this is a victory for sony becuase they'll make more in royalties, but it isn't any kind of a loss for microsoft.
now i personally need to decide if ffxiii in a couple years is reason enough to get a ps3 now that i won't need one for blu-ray movies.

windows, on a very low side estimate based on a few numbers I have looked at, is the operating system on about 90% of PC's worldwide. 90%, Linux is still behind the Mac OS, call me when Windows is below a very dominant 75% market share and then it will be time to worry. You do realize that not too many other products will ever reach the market share of even 50%.

So linux may gain support from internet nerds, and people who want to be different, but to Joe Q User and Bob J. Business-owner, windows is still by far the king. First off, Sony is cashing in on every drive. Second, why would they give Microsoft a leg up?

Sony products with have the best Blu-Ray players, and some way will have the 100gig or 200gig disc exclusive to the PS3 some how, some way.

Yeah who didn't see this coming? Apple announced a while back they would support Blu-ray drives in their hardware so MS would follow shortly just as they announced it.

MS makes more money off of Sony from royalty fees than Sony does off MS. Why? Because MS develops its technologies alone.
Blu-ray on the other hand, is owned collectively by a bunch of companies. Sony only gets smaller cuts of the royalties MS has to pay.

And besides, think of all the laptops that come pre-installed with windows OSes. The MP3 players that have connectivity with windows platforms and all the other stuff that is compatible with windows just because windows owns about 90% of the OS market. That is a sh!t load of money MS makes off of Soneh right there.

This is just business fanboys; don't get it confused with your fanboy wars. Sony pays MS for using it's technologies, and MS will be paying Sony for using it's hardware. This is a big win for Sony, but not that much of an issue for Microsoft. I think the only reason MS is upset is because Blu-ray is now an advantage for the PS3 that the 360 didn't have from the start.

* develop a fast & optimized Unix/Linux based Operating system(like Mac OS X) and preinstall it on the Ps3. Then Sony will have a Trojan horse like with BD to start to challenge MS Vista in the OS market once Sony OS is ported to PCs.

* develop a better version of the Wii-mote....the Play-mote.

The addon might be made for 360 but nobody cares about bd movies right now so for some 400k units MS wont waste their time and money. That money will be better spent on getting more exclusives and snatching exclusives from rivals ;)

They know 18+ million bought 360 for gaming not for watching HD or BD movies unlike the other camp.

now both have support for blu-ray....the thing is, ps3 is fully using blu-ray for games, 360 is only using it as a means of entertainment ( media purposes only)

360 games will still be on a DVD...which is ok because of 3 things

1: the gaming industry right now is in no hurry to fully use blu-ray, sony only picked blu-ray because it's the future for multimedia, having a 2 in 1 deal they realized would pay off in the long run.

2: if MS would have done what sony has done blu-ray wouldn't have dominated so early, and neither console would see an end of this format war until ps4 and xbox's 720.

3: one dvd is 9 gigs, two is 18, with 18 gigs games are still able to make progress, crysis was only one and it's graphics towered over many games, the only games that would demand a blu-ray would be RPG's.

for right now that is, the more ram consoles will have in the future the more disc pace their going to need for future purposes, and right now both only have 512.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.
