Gamepro: First look at Saints Row 2

Saints Row was released in 2006 for the Xbox 360. And to the astonishment of many game critics, it was rather great. On the surface it was little more than a clone of the popular open-world, Grand Theft Auto-style of play. But if you dug deeper there was plenty to love: sparkling hi-def visuals, amusing lowbrow wit, and a bevy of bizarre side missions (such as Insurance Fraud) that were actually more enjoyable than the main storyline. It was, and is, a great game.

Since Saints Row sold oodles of copies, it's no surprise that the developers at Volition (of Red Faction fame) are hard at work on a sequel, due out this year for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Gamepro recently saw the game in action on the Xbox 360, and these were the highlights.

Total GTA rip off but it was the first time a GTA type sandbox game came to next gen and it was great.

Wonder when this is coming out. They're probably going to launch close to holidays to stay well away from GTA IV.

eagle216648d ago

They just promised SR2 won't be bug free. What does that mean? Any bugs in the first?

Exhaust6648d ago

Straight up it had some issues but still a great game. I love sandbox games and espcially GTA so i really liked it.

creeping judas6648d ago

the MP was buggy as s**t!! the SP had a few frame rate issues. But other then that it was a great GTA clone.
If you enjoyed GTA then youd enjoy Saint's Row.

Broken Games That Never Got Fixed

While a lot (like way too many) games launch in sorry states these days, a lot of them do eventually get polished up over time fixes. The same can’t be said for these properly broken games.

Worst for me is wipeout 2048.
I got gold in every single player race, made it extremely far into the great online shop platinum was a finger away.. then lost all my online progression. Many players experienced the same and hadn’t been fixed since

joab777282d ago

Cyberpunk and No Mans Sky are obviously the 2
best comeback stories. Cyberpunk is literally one of the best RPGs ever made now.

Christopher281d ago

I wouldn't call NMS broken at release, just under-delivered.

Michiel1989282d ago

junctioning is only broken now because it's been datamined which monster which gives which card and which card gives which items and every single spell to junction with the highest points for each stat. For it's time when that info wasn't readily available it was good, not without it's flaws, but not broken,

-Foxtrot282d ago

Exactly. I never got this because what made it broken was the knowledge of what to exploit.

Playing the game for the first time back then you never had any knowledge to make it so easy.

One minute the Junction system is complicated, the next it's super easy / broken. What is it?

gold_drake281d ago

i mean, ff8 is not "broken" per se, its just that the junction system is too good and easily exploited even an hour into the game. haha

Ashunderfire86281d ago

Star Wars Jedi Survivor is one of them. I can’t get in the Cantina bar later on in the game. The door and other doors throughout the environment is locked off. It is a shame, because I wanted to complete the game, but I can’t until they fix it.

You know usually when someone says "you may have missed" it's games that were lesser known, hidden gems, underrated games. These are all super high profile games that sold extremely well.

FPS_D3TH1241d ago (Edited 1241d ago )

You know the 2000s is 20 years ago too? Maybe, just maybe this wasn’t an article targeted to 30+ gamers? Still says at the very beginning of the title “THE BEST GAMES you may have missed”. Regardless of how well they sold there’s tons of gamers who haven’t touched these older well known games lol.

Welshy1241d ago (Edited 1241d ago )

It's games you "may have missed", insinuating you were around and gaming in the 2000's and were there to miss them. If it was aimed at everyone else then they missed literally everything, not just the top games.

The original commenter is right, this is a badly written article at best pointless at worst.

Crows901241d ago

Besides only being able to miss it if you were around during that time..if your point stands then this is a horrible list. Tons of better games people may have missed

I would like the original max payne remade in a new engine with ray tracing. 😊

FPS_D3TH1241d ago

Remedy games already working on that and I’m so stoked for it

XxINFERNUSxX1241d ago

Oh yeah thanks for reminding me I totally forgot they were doing it. Also what the hell happened to Kingpin: Reloaded? On Steam coming soon and nohting from the dev.

MadLad1241d ago

Yeah, I was just going to say. It's interesting seeing them back behind the series. Max Payne 3 was amazing, but then Rockstar just sat on the IP.
Well, they sit on virtually anything that isn't GTA and Red Dead now.

porkChop1241d ago

What is this list? These are all hugely popular games. I was expecting games like Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, Advent Rising, Arx Fatalis, etc.

FPS_D3TH1241d ago

the title didn’t say lesser known titles from the 2000s. This is 20 years ago now lol. Big assumption this list was made for older gamers.

Dirty_Lemons1241d ago

That makes me feel so old.

Inverno1241d ago

I've only played 3 on that list. Part of me feels bad about how little I used all the consoles I've owned as a kid. One bright side is, there's over 30 years of games to experience for the first time.
