Xbox Durango: How Microsoft Can Win Next-Gen

"With rumours swirling around about next-generation consoles, Sony’s unveiling of ‘some’ PlayStation 4 information has gotten people wondering what exactly Microsoft can do to match or surpass Sony’s new console" | Explosion.com

Depends how Microsoft sees winning.

Aside from sales even if say ps4 sells more games ms would still stay but our nexbox has more users using it for Facebook and tv etc.

In all honesty if they are still 75% about games then they still have my vote.

Sony seems very committed to and I am glad. Remember it's a games console not a multimedia device that can also play games.

aceitman4822d ago

If Sony can catch up to ms coming in a year later and Sony coming in this gen 1st or at the same time with a very good console and a good price I can't see ms winning next gen at all. If Sony says they learn there mistakes from last gen and do it right Sony can dominate strong. I'm not trolling it's just looking in Sonya's favor strongly .

The Meerkat4822d ago

Good online service with good games, thats all I need.

I opted with MS this gen because by the time Sony had games and an acceptable online I was already committed to MS.

But next gen Sony will have the online and the games working right from the start. So I'm inclined to go with Sony this time as I don't like the direction MS have taken over the last 24 months.

Skips4822d ago (Edited 4822d ago )

Sonya?

http://trickfist.com/trickf...

EDIT: I completely agree.

madpuppy4821d ago

Sonic200, that picture of Sonya looks like Dolf Lundgren on hormone therapy.

b163o14821d ago

Agreed, MS biggest downfall is the lack of original IP's. Something we all know Sony is fairly strong at. The article says MS should just make new IP's for there core gamers, but the problem with that is creating IP's is not an easy task. If it was the MS would be known for more the just Halo, Gears and Forza. It's a big financial risk to create a new IP's and know matter how well if its promoted or advertised if its a bad game it's not gonna sell. I remember MS buying up studios when the 360 first came out, but did nothing with them. I hope they can right there ship, cause we as gamers are the one who benefit, no matter which system is your choice…cheers

dcbronco4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

Actually Original IP that doesn't sell has been a part of Sony's struggles. It may help them this generation, but it hurt them badly last generation. People keep talking like Sony has had major success with all of their exclusives. It's the exact opposite. Most haven't done well. They were break even games or lost money. Starhawk and Twisted Metal and inFamous 2. Those games lost money.

As much as people want to hate Kinect most of those games probably made money. So last generation had nothing to do with this generation. The only effect will be on fanboys of both sides incapable of making an informed choice. Fanboys will remain loyal to a fault while rational people will be smart enough to make a rational choice.

Rational people will look at all three consoles and decide on one or the other , two of the choices or all three. They won't base their decision on myths and legends and belief that it can't be on the Internet if it isn't true.

And save the only Sony cares about gamers thing. There is a name for companies that really, reallly care about what their company is doing. Non-profits(and most of them are liars too).

It needs:
GAMES, GAMES, GAMES(EXCLUSIVE GAMES, NO KINECT GAMES)
CHEAP PRICE
FREE ONLINE

If there is a kinect, then we all know they will focus on Kinect, and then no buy Xbox 720

AngelicIceDiamond4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

From article:

"It looks rather obvious that Microsoft can craft games that gamers want to play."

Makes sense the idea of Mass Effect, Gears, Alan Wake last gen games like Halo and Fable.

That's why I'm not worried about MS's core offerings and where it stands. MS has established HOT selling, and brand name franchises.

What makes everyone thank they can't do it again? because of Kinect? For 2 years that was MS's strategy with 360. If MS could, they would be releasing core games along side Kinect but they can't seeing how they don't own enough studios.

With 22 new* studios 6 of them being casual that leaves 16 core studios. Unlike N4G I'm not worried about if they'll "make hardcore" games or not. That's a pretty dumb question why wouldn't they?

MS is releasing a new video game console. The hardcore are the first to listen and observe (E3) and the first one in line (retail stores) Hardcore are there thick and thin.

And clearly MS knows this.

Donnieboi4821d ago

Such strong delusion...

mistertwoturbo4821d ago

Hardware wise they need:

16 Core Intel i7-4960X Processor
32GB GDDR6 in Quad Channel
2 GTX TITAN's on the same die
2TB SSD
USB 4.0

All priced under $299.

Boy, that escalated quickly.

'Integrate Kinect Properly Into Hardcore Games'

That idea alone is doomed to fail because that's not what hardcore gamers want.

OlgerO4821d ago

What? dont you like flailing your arms in front of the tv ?seems pretty hard core to me.

ALLWRONG4821d ago

You will be doing the same thing on the PS4 with the PS4's Kinect like thing.

Is the Sony camp trying to deny its existence?

CraigandDayDay4821d ago

The difference is that the Move will be used for hardcore ps4 games and the Kinect-type gameplay for games like just dance and the like.

DigitalRaptor4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

@ ALLWRONG

The "PS4's Kinect like thing"? You mean their next logical iterative enhancement of the PS EYE? Yeah, it was going to happen regardless of Microsoft's focus on camera-based gaming/yoga.

However, I welcome new options, but where I know it will benefit me, is that it won't be a huge focus like we know Kinect 2.0 will be for Microsoft. I like the way in which Sony treated Move, as its focus didn't supersede the reasons for which people bought the PS3 in the first place. I hope and expect that modest approach with the PS4 EYE technology, where they offer it to developers but don't force people to make things out of it. Same with the light-bar on the DS4, I expect cool options from it, but don't take away what is core to the experience.

As long as both companies have a strong core gaming presence then I don't have issues. I've heard Microsoft have formed new studios to make new IPs. As long as they're not all Kinect-based there shouldn't be a problem.

Don't force kinect on us, release some games, new games for gamers, I dont want to dance jump or move around my living room, i just want to get home from work, switch on my console and play a proper game

DiRtY4822d ago

Durango could cure cancer and N4G would still prefer the PS4.

SnakeCQC4822d ago

sony consoles usually allow you to do more than just gaming and are made to a better quality(my ps3 40gb fat version runs still runs quieter than my xbox 360 elite which sounds like its got lawn mower motor powering the dvd drive) and online is free m$ charging for playing online was a d*** move

doublebass24821d ago

Maybe if you really had an xbox 360 you would know by now that install games to harddrive, or usb stick-pen drive makes it way more quiter and faster than ps3 loading countrerpart! Its from a 2009 update, an now you can install 2 usb devices up to 32gb each!!Quit complaining!

p.s. cheer that you still have a functional 40gb ps3!It will soon ylod or rlod as well as mine did..Go get a slim ps3 before its 2 late!!

SnakeCQC4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

I've had an xbox and ps3 for some time and have a high end pc. I work; so I have money and don't rely on my parents for gifts every xmas and birthday.

i do install games but ms doesnt make it easy to change out the hdd so i fill my 120 gb quite easy ps even with the games installed its alot louder than my ps3

MysticStrummer4821d ago

If only more people could be as mature as you, Dildo.

Rockstar4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

Apparently you weren't here in 2006. As a PS3 owner at the time Sony hate was rampant and "ps fanboys" were in the minority.

The reason why "this site is so infected" may be bigger fan base?

Just guessing.

ALLWRONG4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

"Apparently you weren't here in 2006"

That's just an excuse, this is 2013. If you want to be taken to the past go watch "Angry Video Game Nerd".

Rockstar4821d ago

I'm not making excuses.
Just refreshing the memories of all the pots calling the kettle black.

Also...I think I will watch Angry Video Game Nerd.

PurpHerbison4821d ago

I genuinely miss the era that had the modest "to each their own" kind of sony fanboy. The current sony fanboy is just as ridiculous as the early microsoft fanboy for the 360.

mistertwoturbo4821d ago

I was here in 2006. It wasn't just PlayStation gamers that were targeted. The sheer mention of you owning a Wii over a 360 grants you 10 lashes.

Thankfully those rabid 360-only fans are gone.

Now I've also noticed the uprising of rabid PS fanboys, but they are nowhere near the mental retardation of those 360 ones.

Maybe if MS actually release some games and stop charging for the privilege of using my own bandwidth I might actually start paying attention.

I find it funny that you find it funny that gamers don't like a console that's not focused on games.

SDF Repellent4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

"I find it funny that you find it funny that gamers don't like a console that's not focused on games."

LOL, do you know how embarrassing that comment is. Outside of Twisted Metal and Sony Smash brothers, what titles that was on the PS3 last year that Xbox 360 owners don't have the option to buy? Oh yes, there was also Halo 4 and Forza Horizon too.

4821d ago
SDF Repellent4821d ago

@Tiqila,

LOL, if you are referring to the free games on PS +, you do know it is not free right? Those Free games are only available to you while you have a valid subscription, if it is canceled, you are S.O.L. How do I know? Because I had used the service before, have you?

saint_seya4821d ago

SDF, idk MAYBE journey, that won more awards than forza and halo 4 #guess u decided to forget that game ;)

DigitalRaptor4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

With a name like SDF Repellent, it really goes to show that when it comes down to it you're really a huge fanboy, and it exposes your insecurities.

In relation to your comment, it's not fine to ignore that Microsoft ACTUALLY charge you to use your own bandwidth. P2P connectivity. Heard of it? Obviously not. Nothing embarrassing about exposing Microsoft on that part.

What other titles you say? I say LittleBigPlanet Karting, Starhawk, Sorcery, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, Yakuza: Dead Souls, Tales of Graces f, MLB 12: The Show, Jak & Daxter/Ratchet & Clank HD (old games, still options for PS3 gamers), The Unfinished Swan. Let's not forget the game of the year Journey which, as a downloadable title, beat out many big names - even Halo 4.

However, what we're talking about here, is Microsoft doing the same thing as they did with the original Xbox, which is dropping support. After the spin-off Gears game, what's on the horizon for the 360? Exactly.

PS3: Ni no Kuni, Sly Cooper, God of War, The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, Tales of Xilia, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Remix, Dust 514, GT6. Perhaps The Last Guardian and FF Versus XIII.

360: Gears of War Judgement.

Hmmmmm, yeah..

4821d ago
StreetsofRage4821d ago

LilBigPlanetKarting? LOL!

You just made yourself look like a fool with that one. Just cuz sony has more exclusives doesn't mean it's any good. The games you mentioned nobody wanted. All Stars? LMAO! Get out of here with that mess. Didn't even crack the top 50 in software sales the first month. Like I always say....

The 360: Quality
The Ps3: Quantity

Can't wait for Gears Judgement. BTW, Ni No was a good game. First game I bought since Uncharted 3. And by from all those exclusives that you mentioned...I'm not the only one that skipped those games judging them by sales.

That cure for cancer would only be available with a XBL Gold account.

Speaking of curing diseases, did 360 ever have anything like Folding@home? The app has been removed from PS3 now, but it was available for 6 years.

http://folding.stanford.edu...

lol @SDF "what titles that was on the PS3 last year that Xbox 360 owners don't have the option to buy?"

You are truly representative of your chosen online community, SDF. On behalf of PSN, thank you for staying with XBL.

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio15d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing14d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9214d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit14d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing14d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9214d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Athlon10117d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit16d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg16d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10116d ago (Edited 16d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14917d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay16d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn217d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn216d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown17d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay16d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay16d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac16d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger17d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300017d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde17d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde16d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
