I just hope that jesper (the motherboard with both 65nm cpu and gpu) will fix this problem once and for all. Having experienced three RRoD with my friend's machine (Lucky it still works), I'm afraid of playing the Xbox everytime I see one. Being a hardcore gamer, I know if I bought an Xbox, I would have to put it under dry ice because my gaming sessions are that long.

Buying a 360 is like buying HIV positive, is only a matter of time before you get full blow AIDS or in this case RROD.

Why don't Microsoft add a failsafe to the system? A temperature detection of some sort. When the temp exceeds the normal operating zone it automatically shuts off the system. I would think that its fairly cheap to integrate. Even if the design of the motherboard is flawed this definitely helps prevent the inevitable RROD error.

Sadly the answer right now is...YES...ALL of the released models will eventually die, why? because the source of the problem has yet to be addressed, in this case the poorly placed 90nm GPU and the lackluster cooling fans

the new models have only extended the time or life of the 360 before the guaranteed death, how and why?, the new model incorporate better heatsinks which reduce the heat and a 65nm CPU which emits less heat BUT what is the point of this if the source of the problem the GPU is still 90nm (rumored to be now 80nm) still badly placed under a DVD drive and all the heat emanation are still trapped inside the box by some lackluster fans NOT designed for that kind of heat emanations (why do you think there is modds for the fans)

that is not to say "itz teh doomz" since modders have already done what MS has yet to do, find the problem (so next time you hear that people don't know what causes the RROD tell them or point at goggle) and actually make a proficient cooling system for the 360, it is also interesting for people to know that the RROD is EASILY fixed and you can technically do it in your house! and like I said before WITHOUT a towel or some other crappy madeup way but actually pretty much the way MS fixes them (takes around 30min to 1hour)

also technically if you have experience building PCs you could right now repair a/your RROD AND modd it so its (almost) RROD proof..and a little extra tip you DON'T have to necessarily void the warranty ;)

I have bought 2 360's and still no RROD. Bought one Day 1. Gave that one to my lil cousin and bought an Elite. Remember that article a few days ago about that kid who took his 360 everywhere and had it signed by gamers? Well its people like him that make RROD worse than it really is.

Fortunately, after buying 5 ps2's with its dreaded disc error flaw, I learned to always purchase an extended warranty. So I'm covered! :)

sh*t i must be the luckiest guy alive. I got my 360 feb. after the launch. i still have it. no problems what so ever. and until sept. when i went back to school it was on daily for hours. even now. its on quite alot. with movies playing or listening to music...

that is my answer....NO!, I've had an Elite since September, It was manufactured 7/5/07. I leave it on all night sometimes, downloading games,demos, movies. I watch movies, play games for hours,+, and so far nothing!, I Never worry about the Box Self Destructing....I plan on having it up until the next XBOX console is released. I waited for the Elite after i heard the 1st rumor that it was coming ....also i Had no interest in the White console anyways.....

Everything wears out eventually. I have a handful of friends who are still on their launch systems, and other friends, like myself, who have been through multiple systems.

Sooner or later, those launch systems will wear out through either normal use, or as a result of the inherent design flaw in the early models.

The Falcons have not been out long enough to truly judge their long-term viability, but it certainly can't be any worse than their predecessors.

Time will tell.

If you have a launch model, use it as often as possible to break it sooner, not later. If it's going to break, it's better to get it done and over with early.

Some things are meant to be replaced. Light bulbs, shampoo, toilet paper…we call them consumer goods. GAME CONSOLES ARE NOT CONSUMER GOODS! (sorry for the caps, but some people honestly need them.) Electronics in general are not consumer goods.

Sure there have been electronics with high failure rates in the past, but what usually happens to them? One of three things:

1) They get recalled and replaced with WORKING units.
2) The company QUICKLY fixes the problem and sales continue.
3) The company does little or nothing, people stop buying, and the item dies out.

So it’s obvious that a certain console maker doesn’t want it’s bread and butter to go anywhere anytime soon, so why have they yet to fix their broken hardware?

Because people keep buying. Plain and simple.

They offer a warrantee and everyone suddenly thinks that everything is ok? I’m sorry, but I think it’s about time you guys stop bending over. Stand up straight! Pull your pants back up! I said it once and I’ll say it again, just to remind you guys. The point of a warrantee is to replace a broken item with a working one. Not a broken item with another broken one.

No matter how difficult a certain company says it is to fix the problem with their hardware, if people stopped buying it, do you think the problem would not be fixed by now?

Now, I just want to say I have nothing against Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. I have all three (all 5 if you count the PSP and DS). I am a fan of gaming. That’s it. I have been since the Atari 2600. But, I AM SEVERLY against any company thinking that they can continually getting away with such substandard hardware just because the money is still coming in.

The repair guys don’t even take us seriously sometimes. Did you hear about that poor guy who had all those valuable signatures and drawings up and cleaned off his system? Do some of you actually believe it was a mistake that they looked right past the letter he had written them of the importance of this unit to him as they scrubbed that not-quite-permanent-enough ink until it was gone? Do you think that there weren’t at least a couple of chuckles in the office as this whole thing was going down?

I honestly hope that that story was somehow made up. But even if it was, there are enough other stories out there to take it’s place…

Out of all the systems I’ve had, there’s only one system that I can honestly say I’m afraid to touch (even with Gears of War sitting in it right now). When mine breaks, I’m not going to replace it, warrantee or not. Not until they flat out fix this problem.

I’d rather leave the broken hardware on the shelves. I think you guys should consider the same.

it is amazing that so many people are on their 4th or 5th machine. I am on my 4th as well, and I would sell it if it wasnt for Gears of war 2.

dude look the only reason why most of these people even bother sending their xbox's back is cuz they paid for them. so if you pay for something you obviously want something in return why i bet if most of them could get their money back instead they would up for that instead and probably end up getting one of the other two system whether that being a ps3 or a wii with some games as well.

don't get me wrong the 360 is a great system and its supported by the major studios which is a good thing, but its reliability just sucks and thats something that even a fanboy like yourself has to swallow its pride for and admit.

so far this year 360 sales haven't been exactly extraordinary, so that goes to show you whats going on. heck i have a 360 myself but minds like the rest of these people's system has gone through the same fate and did i get one back? no. not because i didn't want one but because i was one of the many unlucky ones without insurance so screw me once not twice.

so i sold my games and got them for the ps3, the ones i couldn't get on the ps3 i simply got my cash for them instead. hey i could live without halo 3, i got COD4 and unreal 3 and resistance i think im fairly covered. waiting for haze and MGS4 and a few others.

its a shame really i still have my ps3 from a month after launch, and it still works perfectly find. heck even my ps2 and even my original xbox works find as well.

2nd 360 - Overheat

3rd 360 - DVD drive failure / overheat

4th 360 - overheat / tripped the circuit breakers for my entire house

I think I can safely say that the 360 is by far the biggest pile of dog crap I have ever seen come in the form of a gaming console. I have number 5 right now and will continue to play the system as long as great games come out for it but if it were not for the games I would have kissed the console goodbye a long time ago.

I was an Xbox fan since the original Xbox. Bought my 360 and had two develop the RROD inside 12 months so luckily I could take it back to the shop for a replacement. When the third unit started developing disk reading errors after it got too hot (only after around two hours of being switched on) I decided to get rid of it and get a PS3. I enjoyed the games on the 360, liked the online service but it felt like I was playing Russian Roulette every time I switched it on. After trying out a friends PS3 I realised I had a choice, it had a good online service that was free and it had its own list of great exclusive titles. Not everyone wants to switch but sometimes enough is enough. Despite the good titles available your gaming should be a relaxing experience not a frustrating one. I'd like to think Microsoft would learn from their mistakes but they've not done so yet with their operating systems.

i have a falcon and my friend has xenon ( launch model). you can easily tell the difference in heat level after they have both been on for a few hours. the xenon is very very hot whilst my falcon is only warm to the touch.

as for failure rate 2/4 of my 360 owning friends have had to send theirs in. but those 2 had xenons, the other 2 of my friends are recent purchasers who bought falcons. i dont expect my falcon to die on me.

I have a LAUNCH SYSTEM which i have taken care of as if it were a PC, or laptop or equivalent, and it is pefectly fine...

I suppose all electronics eventually break. it's just that they shouldn't break before their usefulness is wore out. If people are on their 3rd or forth console people are still using them when they break. So their not lasting long enough to complete the 5 year console life.
