PS4 is a Great System “For Developers”

The official confirmation of the PlayStation 4 from Sony was something that many people had long awaited since rumblings first surfaced on the internet. The event held in New York City by Sony provided some great insight into the direction the company is moving, with a lot of promising ideas at the forefront. Yet one statement that constantly resonated throughout the entire conference was the concept of PlayStation 4 being a saving grace for game developers. And while this is very appealing and something that will lead to some great titles down the line, it is also the seeds of what could possibly be a problem for Sony in the years to come. Shouldn’t the PS4 be a great system for gamers as much as it is for developers? Aren’t those who buy the games in the end supposed to be the first priority for a company like Sony? This is where aspects of the presentation in New York City start to take a very interesting turn.

Hopefully being a great console "for developers" results in them being able to make better games more easily. If that happens, as it should, then that in turn leads to a better experience for gamers.

I think the general idea is that a better console "for developers" is a prerequisite to a better console "for gamers." That's the IDEA I think...time will tell!

wsoutlaw874754d ago

Ya thats obvious. Better for the makers of the games and their ability to really make games great, means better games, which is better for people who like games obviously. This author trying to make that sound like a bad thing is ridiculous.

Godchild10204754d ago

I hope it means cheaper development cost which means more games or more unique experiences in new IPs or existing ones.

RememberThe3574754d ago

GG said the new Killzone wasn't a huge jump from the other games in the series cost wise (they said the team went from 120 to 150 people). We'll probably see less games with the $60 price tag as they will cost a bit more to make and every publisher seems to agree that they flooded the market this gen and that cut into their profit margins. But we'll probably see more of these indie games, at least on the PS4 with Sony allowing self-publishing. This next gen is going to be interesting.

SilentNegotiator4754d ago

A great system for developers is a great system for the gamers.

mistertwoturbo4754d ago

Oh my lord, this site reaks of Anti-Sony stuff every time.

So last generation, PS3 gamers got shoddy ports, lost exclusive games, missed out on "exclusive DLC" to the 360, waited too long for certain titles like GT5 etc. all because developers had a hard time coming to gripes with the console. Who really lost? The consumers. (Not to say we didn't end up with good stuff.) The 360 fanboys were on this like flies on crap.

But this time around, Sony designs as console to remove any burdens to let the developers have freedom of creativity, now stupid sites like this is spinning it into a negative thing.

What in the world is wrong with you people?

If developers get the right tools and the right platform, they will make better games, and the consumers will benefit.

cleverusername4754d ago

That's why anything on this site needs to be taken with a sack of salt!

Great article and I especially like how you pointed out how they emphasized PS4 is GREAT for DEVELOPERS. Some will assume that every DEVELOPER is also a GAMER as well but in some cases this isn't always true by default. When I hear the system is made with Developers in mind, I immediately cringe at the thought of this being overpriced but easily accessible for people who want to make games on it. In any event, many are willing to spend 600 dollars on a new console so in that case I'd say to them do what you will...

KwietStorm_BLM4754d ago

I cannot for the life of me understand how this is all being taken out of context. Its great for developers, meaning ease of.....development. Its what we all want as software programmers. Nobody wants to run into problems before they even get started, just because it wasn't engineered properly. Its about making a platform that developers can jump right into and be efficient with. How this can be a bad thing or even a questionable thing is beyond my comprehension. Sony finally gets around to fixing one of the biggest criticisms they received this generation, only to be criticized for fixing it. LOL inconceivable.

majiebeast4754d ago (Edited 4754d ago )

I was very happy to see Tim Schafer in the ps4 dev video. So they didnt just ask the very big developers for their opinion on the ps4.

Also it will improve the quality of pc ports so that as a playstation+pc gamer makes me very happy.

Now if a developer cant program for ps4 they cant blame the system but only their own skill(Looking at you bugthesda).

Root4754d ago

Me aswell I'm glad Tim was featured on it

I was really enjoying the differnt developers they got on

...

...well except Tameem Antoniades

ElectroJade4754d ago

Gamers should admire the fact that Sony is focusing on game development. Highlighting lesser-known game developers is also an admiring feature. After all, gamers want something different. Most of us are getting sick of the shitty franchises out there at the moment.

Nick2120044754d ago

Hope Sony receives better third party support than with the PS3 at launch

brettyd4754d ago

Sounds like they will, the days of PS owners getting shafted on multiplatform games should be over.

Sony's Bluepoint Closure Should Concern Every PS Studios Fan

Sammy: "Sony disastrously and disgracefully shuttered Texas-based fan favourite Bluepoint yesterday. The long-time PS Studios partner never got a chance to ship a game under its new parent company.

This news hit me particularly hard because I believe it reflects the erosion of once-great PlayStation management that I think we’ve all been feeling for quite some time."

How was this allowed to happen? A studio know for excellent remakes and remasters were put on a GOW live service game? Something nobody wanted? There are so many other, more interesting projects, for me they were the prime studio who should have remastered or remade Bloodborne, what an absolute waste, I'm really annoyed about this.

Hulst should have followed Jim Ryan out the door, especially after his failed concord brainchild, execs really do only fail upwards.

Extermin8or3_7d ago

You say "no body wanted" but we don't actually know if the Devs were the ones to pitch it. For all we know

Elda7d ago

If that was the case you would have thought Sony would have told Bluepoint no & had them make the God Of War trilogy remake instead while having Santa Monica Studios concentrate on the next God Of War & what ever else they're working on. A Bloodborne remake/remaster would have definitely printed Sony millions. It seems the upper management doesn't care what the fans think including them making awful business decisions. To take Bluepoint under their wing for 5 years & dismantle them is crazy work, Sony should have auctioned Bluepoint off to to a company that could really use them.

-Foxtrot7d ago

If the really did pitch it then they would have wanted their own IP for being a brand new game, not using someone else’s IP when it’s not a remake this time.

CrashMania7d ago

I mean I guess, but doubt that a small team of 70 wanted to do a live service game, I don't buy it personally, but we'll never 100% know.

Scissorman7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

i think you are half right. sony became hyper-focused on live service games and given that, studios would then pitch live service games because those projects were the most likely to be greenlit by the higher ups. now, as for what the hell bluepoint was working on since their god of war game was cancelled is beyond me. it's just increasingly frustrating when sony just announced a god of remake which is still in its infancy when bluepoint could have been working on it for years and likely would have shipped it by now.

MDTunkown7d ago

We had a god of war mp in the past and it didn’t do well back then with less competition so doubtful people wanted a live service game especially from devs that made some top tier remakes

Michiel19897d ago

Copium like this is the reason they're in this position. Sony could do no wrong and when something did go wrong, it's never the corporate suits at sony who are to blame.....its either: devs bad or ms/phil spencer bad while their own backyard is on fire. This is the result of not caring what your fav company does just because another company does (way) worse and automatically condoning everything. I hope they can turn it around without having to fuck over their customers more because especially some of the games on ps1 through ps3 were absolutely amazing.

Can't really say im surprised it's gotten to this point although I didn't expect them to close Bluepoint who has always delivered stellar work.

1nsomniac6d ago

The devs didn’t pitch it. It’s already been discussed publicly. They had literally just started on a new undisclosed project they were still in the initial ideas phase when they were asked to stop and do GoW instead.

Everyone keeps asking for a Bloodborne remaster or remake — a game that genuinely deserves preservation and modernization. Instead, we got a remake of The Last of Us and then a remaster of The Last of Us Part II, both of which were already recent and widely available. That decision feels tone-deaf. It’s hard not to question priorities when so many legacy titles are untouched.

Bluepoint built its reputation on honoring PlayStation’s history. They were masters at remakes and remasters. There is an entire catalog — from PS1, PS2, and PS3 eras — that fans would celebrate. Yet instead of leveraging that strength, they were redirected toward live service ambitions. Six years later, there’s nothing to show, and now the studio is gone. That’s not just disappointing — it feels like wasted potential.

Sony Bend is another example. Days Gone 2 wasn’t greenlit, and the studio was reportedly shifted toward live service. Years later, that project was canceled, and they’re back at square one. That’s years of development time lost in a generation that already feels light on first-party output.

What’s even more concerning is the broader shift. PlayStation used to thrive on bold, risk-taking single-player projects and strong Japanese creative influence. Now the strategy appears more Western-focused and heavily driven by the live service model — where multiple failures are acceptable as long as one becomes a breakout success.

Competition used to push Sony to take creative risks. The PS3 vs. Xbox 360 era forced innovation. Today, Xbox has shifted direction, Nintendo operates independently in its own lane, and Sony doesn’t feel the same competitive pressure. Without that tension, the urgency to push boundaries seems diminished.

The frustration many fans feel isn’t just about one remake or one canceled project — it’s about a sense that PlayStation’s identity is drifting. And while loyalty is natural, defending every decision without criticism doesn’t help the platform grow.

It’s not anger because we hate PlayStation. It’s frustration because we care about what it used to represent

It does concern me that they think closing amazing studios like Bluepoint and Japan Studios is smart.

I'm honestly surprised Media Molecule is still around. They put out what 1 game in the past 10+ years? I personally wasn't interested in Dreams, so they have been a wash for me since the PS3 era. Are they working on a new game? What are they doing?

Stevonidas7d ago

I immediately recalled when they shut down Japan Studio. I don’t understand why any studio would agree to be acquired by Sony, EA, or Microsoft with their history of studio closures.

MrNinosan6d ago

MM is most likely next to close down, and my guess it's sooner than later

FTLmaster7d ago

Frustrating news, for sure. Hulst is on a major losing streak. Baffling decisions....

Lightning777d ago

They could of let them do a Remakes of Sly, Jak and Daxter maybe the old Killzone games. Ported Demon Souls to other platforms. Steady revenue for growth becoming a 70 team to 100+ eventually.

toxic-inferno7d ago

Precisely! PlayStation have a rich back catalogue that is screaming out for a talented team like those at Bluepoint to work their magic upon.

Such wasted potential. And a terrible thing to happen to those talented workers at Bluepoint.

Demon's Souls remake was the gateway to FromSoft games for me. I'd fully beaten Bloodborne, but had struggled to get into Dark Souls. Demon's Souls - as a launch title - showed me how these games are meant to be played.

Miacosa7d ago

As a PS Fan and someone that looks to new exsperiences not rehashing old ones I can feel for the devs but it does not move the needle as far as getting new video games.

Sony and Nintendo are both thriving and I'm happy, thank goodness for them or otherwise the whole gaming industry would be in shambles if they only had PC to rely on!

dveio22d ago

• Total G&NS revenue: 10.5 billion USD
• Operating profit: 900 million USD
• Hardware sales: 8M units shipped
• Software sales: 97M units
• PSN MAU: 132M

vs. Xbox:

• Total gaming revenue: 5.96 billion USD
• nothing else gets reported

__y2jb22d ago

Xbox operating costs are without a doubt eye wateringly high, way way way higher than Sony. GP is costing them an absolute fortune to operate.

Tapani22d ago

That is a very solid operating profit. It's not net, obviously, but still a very healthy amount of cash you make after cost of debt and taxes (+ other expenses), and can invest into R&D and future endeavours. And give back to your shareholders or buy back shares.

DivineHand12522d ago

It would be in Sony's beat interest to not rush next generation. Let 2029 or 2030 be the start of next generation. There is clearly plenty of demand for the PS5 and gamers are not asking for more at this time.

S2Killinit22d ago

Yup especially with the price of tech going up. They already have the PRO to hold them over.

__y2jb22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Exactly this. Let Xbox wither on the vine for a couple more years and there will be nothing left.

fr0sty22d ago

I fully agree for 2 reasons:

1. Microsoft seems to be in a hurry to release the new Xbox, if they do at all... AMD speculates a 2027 release. This will hurt them in the long run, because:

2. Datacenters are buying up ALL the RAM, and some RAM manufacturers have stopped making RAM for consumer products entirely, while the other remaining ones are scared to ramp up their production capacity to make more RAM because they're worried this whole AI thing is a bubble that is about to pop, and they don't want to be caught holding the bag when it does pop. So, for now, it costs $300-400 for 32GB of DDR5. That's the MSRP for some entire consoles.

If Microsoft drops the new Xbox now, it's going to cost them a fortune. If Sony holds their cards a moment and lets PS5 cook for a while, as it's showing no signs whatsoever of slowing down in sales, then by the time PS6 is ready to drop, RAM prices should have stabilized, allowing Sony to devote much more of their budget towards making PS6's CPU and GPU more powerful, in addition to the tech itself maturing and the available CPU and GPU parts being much more powerful for the same price point than they would be if released today. So, we'd get a super powerful PS6 in say, 2029, that won't have to cost $700-800. They speculate, based on the current specs, that the new Xbox will cost north of $1,000, and that was before the RAM shortage came into the picture. It's definitely going to be even higher now that RAM costs so much.

MS will be shooting themselves in the foot (again) if they try to drop a new Xbox now, and Sony would be wise to capitalize on that mistake by holding their cards a while longer, raking in more of those PS5 profits, and then dropping a new console as soon as the hardware market stabilizes from this AI datacenter BS.

darthv7222d ago

7 years is a hurry...? Its the same amount of time between XBO and series. The same amount of time between PS3 to PS4 and PS4 to PS5. The 360 was 8 years between it and XBO.

If they do release first, and then Sony a year or two later... is it not possible for prices to come down in that time?

repsahj22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

I think Switch 2 beat PS5 during December 2025 that is why the gap decrease to 1m units. Because during black friday, I know PS5 sales is 2:1 against the Switch 2.

And I just want to add that the PlayStation 5 is currently 1.94 million units BEHIND the PlayStation 4 when you align launches. While Switch 2 is 10M ahead against the Switch 1 when you aligned covering it's first 7 months.

S2Killinit22d ago

I think you are forgetting to mention the chip shortages for PS5.

salis84422d ago (Edited 22d ago )

No one wants the Switch 2 to do badly.

PS5 being less than 2m behind PS4 is not a big deal; PS5 had to deal with COVID and ongoing supply and pricing struggles that clearly still exist today. Sales of software are incredibly strong, and the size of the community is bigger than its ever been.

PS5 is well on pace to exceed its early (2021) estimates of 110m by end of life even if that's 2027. PS5 will hit 100m before November and then sell another 6-8M in November + December.

PS5 is doing great, and so is Switch 2, it's good for everyone that they succeed, pitting the two against each other is more damaging than anything related to the sales of the two consoles individually.

repsahj22d ago

"No one wants the Switch 2 to do badly."

majority on this site tells otherwise.

Dexterio22d ago

@repsahj
Yup because they’ve been the anti consumer they are for so long and needs to be humbled 😆

CrashMania22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

I'd be lying if I said I didn't regret my purchase a bit. I mainly bought it for Mario Kart World, but I find it pales in comparison to 8. I'm annoyed that Nintendo charged money for a super barebones 'upgrade' to Jamboree, no new minigames? No new boards? Just some gimmicky low res camera mode. Oh and Midtroid Prime 4 let me down as well, yet to go back and finish it.

I don't want the Switch 2 to fail, it's contributing to a healthier console market with the death of xbox consoles. I'll get use out of mine long term, but some of Nintendo's decisions like the ones above just annoy me lol.

jznrpg22d ago

@respahj the only thing I want Nintendo to badly is the 80$ games so they lower the price.

Sony Patents AI-Generated Podcasts Using PlayStation Character Voices

A new patent registered by Sony suggests the company is exploring the idea of personalized podcasts on PS5, hosted by PlayStation characters.

Eonjay23d ago

Okay this is actually really cool too. What is being proposed here is that the AI will generate you a podcast that is focused on the games tht you play or have wihlisted. This means you always get topic relevant to your tastes. Just don't screw it up with a bunch of ads.

PapaBop22d ago

AI is very cool, it's just all the real cool stuff is being drowned out by companies exploiting it as a marketing buzzword, generative AI slop and companies using it to cut corners and save money.

Sciurus_vulgaris23d ago

This is a terrible idea. Firstly the characters voices originate from real voice work. Secondly, the ai could end up saying questionable things. Thirdly, some voice actors use their regular voice when acting.

Juancho5123d ago

I know it's cool to hate AI, but we only hate AI because of idiots that misuse it or exploit it to take away peoples jobs. THIS is a GREAT application of AI, instead of having a human being voice actor sitting there for hours talking in character while having people writing scripts or coming up with topics etc, it can all just get POOFd into thin air and you can enjoy unique and entertaining content that harms no one.

PapaBop22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Not sure if intentionally being funny lol. isn't this like quite literally taking away people's jobs? I think SAG-AFTRA may disagree about this harming no one.,

Juancho5119d ago

The thing is that this isn't even something that's necessary to create as a job. Without AI it just wouldn't exist period, it wouldn't be worth the effort. So what I mean to say is, having AI utilize the voice actors (with their consent of course) to create unlimited "podcast-style" content is not only super lucrative (which people will call exploitation), but it creates an entire form of entertainment that requires a "Set it and forget it" mechanism where you don't have to babysit it or hire and fire or train or anything.

TLDR: Without AI this wouldn't even be considered at all, so I'd rather have this than not have it at all.

gold_drake23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

i hate this

i hate all of this. dont just use peoples voices for AI slob that u dont pay for
