We asked three PS4 developers how expensive their games are

The answers we got ranged from the frank to the philosophical, but development costs -- and studio headcount -- are clearly going to rise for those making triple-A console games this coming generation.

Of course not. They won't be too much more than current. Tools are getting better. But why not leave open the option to charge more by not answering the question.

morkendo234834d ago (Edited 4834d ago )

let's see I'll take a wild guess at this

current console games (ps3) in the state of wa.
run about 59.99 plus sales tax 64.38 so 4.38cent tax or increase. either ps4 games be 69.99 or 72.99 including tax 69.99=74.38 or 72.99=77.38 might not be accurate but a ball park guess.

either way they will be EXSPENSIVE!!!

SORRY,at those prices i'll stick with my ps3 until sales, lower price announcement for ps4 even then wait til a game i like on sale 29.99.

m-s-8-24834d ago

You're basing that on nothing but speculation.

Anywho, I haven't paid more than 47.99 for a new release game with no sales tax and free shipping and even less if it's not a game I want as soon as possible. Newegg is you're friend.

RankFTW4834d ago

Shopto.net have all PS4 games announced so far priced at £48 for pre order.

dcbronco4834d ago (Edited 4834d ago )

@m-s-8-2

Computers get more and more powerful every year and the games cost less than consoles. As hard as it was to program for the PS3, they still kept prices at $60. Now they have two systems that are modified computers and the modifications are things that make programming easier and people think because the games look better it had to be more expensive. The word corporation is synonymous with pimp. Well, only kinda because people make it so easy for them.

What is up with the improper use of the word "troll" on this website?

Knight_Crawler4834d ago (Edited 4834d ago )

Pricing on next gen games is going to be the deal breaker for me...the most I am willing to pay next gen for AAA games $69.99 and not a penny more.

If games cost more than that then I am done with gaming.

Also PS3 and 360 should cost about $30 at launch.

1nsomniac4834d ago (Edited 4834d ago )

So your saying PS3 & 360 games should launch at £15??

I think games are too expensive to but dont be silly!!

A sensible & accurate price to suit both customer & developer should be £25 - Which is what PC games retail at & was also the biggest platform earner last year surprisingly enough!

REALgamer4834d ago (Edited 4834d ago )

I'd love to only have to pay $69.99 for console games...sounds like a dream come true to me!

We pay $100 US for new games here in Australia, and have for every generation previous (except PS3 games were $119.95 on launch). Nintendo 3DS games cost $69.95 US new here.

Have a look (Gamestop is branded as EB Games here): https://www.ebgames.com.au/

Jockamo4834d ago

Man, Australia is messed up. Their torrent sharing must be through the roof...

DeadlyFire4834d ago

The Alternate source states .99 cents to $60 bucks.

----------------
On pricing, Tretton said that the PS4 is "designed with the game developer in mind and the consumer in mind," and will offer games with prices ranging from $0.99 to the more traditional $60 range with the ability for players to sample games before they buy.

Don't forget, those who think they can't afford them, PS+ has got your back.

Ripsta7th4835d ago

HAHA yur crazy, PS + wnt offer ps4 retails games at the start, maybe a year later.

stage884835d ago

Ok so:

1. You own a time machine
Or
2. You're a top Sony executive

I'm willing to bet none of these but thanks for your input.

Ripsta7th4835d ago

Let me borrow yours then , since your over here claiming PS + has got our back

juandren4835d ago

It will offer retail games you imbecile. And will obviously be discounted for PS+ users

rainslacker4835d ago

It's a reasonable assumption since all games coming out will want to make their money off retail and DD before they go to the IGC. They may offer up some freebies, but don't expect the AAA games to be there unless Sony wants to push PS+ subscriptions. UC4 on PS+ would be a huge boom for them for sure. Wishful thinking though.:)

1nsomniac4834d ago (Edited 4834d ago )

Come on people, get real. You honestly believe PS+ will offer brand new full retail PS4 games at launch!?

..or are these comments sarcasm again, I cant tell on here anymore?

Qrphe4835d ago

So Evolution and Guerrilla said it was a small incremental increase. Ubisoft Montreal said it depends on the tools and expertise of the studio. I'm ok with this.

REALgamer4834d ago

Generally it will increase of the generation as gamer's demands increase.

The number of people who worked on Call of Duty 2 at the launch of the Xbox 360 is nowhere near how many were required for Modern Warfare 3, for example. Same with Assassin's Creed 1 compared to 3.

ziggurcat4835d ago (Edited 4835d ago )

if it's not the same price, then probably $5 - $10 more.

although, most people probably don't realize that the last mortal kombat game on PS3/X360 was $69.99 when it was first released...

Steadyhndz4835d ago

I don't know where you're from but if you're using the $ sign then I'm assuming USA. Games started at $60 here, and always been that way.

Qrphe4835d ago

They're talking about development costs, not retail cost of game.
IF we were to make an assumption based on what's said in the article and the fact that more expensive games would scare people away, I'm gonna say pricetags will remain the same for the most part.

joab7774834d ago

Yeah, i think i read $60 again. I wish there were benchmarks. publishers must send out 100 copies of the game to impartial gamers. These gamers get questionaires concerning length, quality, etc. Then they send them back and a board or something determines the price to be charged. It will need to be regulated. This could work in some form (i know how ansurd it sounds). I would love it because i wouldnt mind paying $70 for some games that r great, took 3 yrs and 100 million to make. I dont want to pay $60 for a 6 hr campaign or an unfinished or unpolished mess.

Unfortunately, if games remain $60, but production costs go up, the money will have to be made elsewhere. Especially early on in a consoles cycle before many ppl own one, and if the economy stays down (ie. Sony and microsoft havnt posted their best numbers, sony has big issues), and ppls cost of living goes up, it could get dicey. EA has talked about free to play which menas micro transactions. I would plan to see lots of dlc, subscription fees. It wouldnt surprise me if MS or sony released a cheap cosole with a monthly fee like smartphone. Everyone gets one but they get a constant revenue stream. There may be offers by both to sell games digitally to cut out retailers. Its gonna get interesting because neither can afford to lose alot of money in 2014 so revenue will have to come quick. Its not my fathers video games industry anymore. Oh wait, i am old. Its not my industry anymore.

1nsomniac4834d ago (Edited 4834d ago )

I remember buying Turok on the N64 for £75. So that would of been around $150 RRP from 'GAME' or as it was called back in the day 'Electronic Boutique'.

Developers or even publishers will charge what ever they think they can get away with. Price increase has nothing to do with making their money back, its all about profit. If people start saying these games cost more publishers will realise that they will be able to increase prices & get away with it. They will set the price high before possibley lowering it to a reasonable increase.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8521d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele21d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk21d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10121d ago (Edited 21d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit21d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg20d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10120d ago (Edited 20d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14921d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle34d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit34d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog34d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog34d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad34d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_34d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage34d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda34d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
