Why Sony's PS4 Controller Just Makes Sense

Development kits surfaced across the web yesterday, and spread like wild-fire, of the upcoming Sony PlayStation 4 and its controller prototype that has been confirmed by multiple sources as being the real deal. While the PlayStation 4 itself has not been refined in the photos to the point that would be sold to the public (more just a computer tower with the components of the PlayStation 4 inside), the controller looks to be a simplistic version, in its design and layout, lacking only the polish that we will more than likely see next Wednesday (February 20th, 2013). The controller is a larger variation than we have seen on any PlayStation controller to date, far more than the simple change of adding two analog sticks to the PlayStation One controller. More than just the modifications we have seen, the new controller is a necessary and sensible evolution of the PlayStation remote and a reflection of the overall direction of the gaming market. It just flat out makes sense.

I don't care, it still looks uncomfortable. The 360 pad is one of, if not THE best design for comfort. If it weren't, the Wii U pro controller wouldn't have ripped off of it with it's own small tweaks.

Those damn thumb sticks are in the most awkward positions. They need to at least release TWO kinds of controllers.

wishingW3L4835d ago (Edited 4835d ago )

it's a rounder dual-shock, how can't it be more comfortable when it is more ergonomic?

Khronikos4835d ago Show
BitbyDeath4835d ago

Some people probably just don't have the motor skills to hold a PS3 controller.

http://i359.photobucket.com...

I have no problem with either.

MaxXAttaxX4834d ago

But there had to be an ass come out at some point to say the opposite.

It makes you wonder why they show up in articles that talk exclusively about one system that they don't like.

Blastoise4835d ago (Edited 4835d ago )

"The 360 pad is one of, if not THE best design for comfort."

Well, that's arguable...

each to their own I guess, I don't find it particularly comfortable

Khronikos4835d ago

Neither do I. I can't stand it and it is great Sony is making what will obviously be the best controller around. WiiU you also notice put in sticks that are symmetrical. Because it works. Notice how the sticks are now further apart and the pad is bigger and more ergonomical. It is perfect.

MasterCornholio4835d ago (Edited 4835d ago )

The controller is ok but i cant stand the 360s DPAD which has to be the worse DPAD that ive ever used.

@Khronikos

Since you mentioned the Wii U controller in my opinion it feels extremely cheap and i find it quite uncomfortable due to the bulkiness of it.

nveenio4834d ago

The 360 controller forces my hand to be in the same position as it is when I'm using a mouse. After 10 hours of programming, my hand needs a new position. If I sit after a day of work and play with a 360 controller (on PC...I don't own a 360), my hand starts to hurt really badly, really quickly. But if I play PS3, my hand gets a break from that position, and I can play for much longer without fatigue. So for me, the 360 pad is the least comfortable. That doesn't mean it's not the most ergonomic, but it's not the most comfortable, either.

OhReginald4835d ago

TOO YOU IT IS....just because you think its the best design for comfort, doesnt mean everyone agress.

stage884835d ago

@OneAboveAll

Um.. You just spouted complete BS.
A controller is subjective by choice. I think the 360 pad is clunky and far too big and I have large hands. The stick placements on the dual shock are perfect (hence the awards it's won). My hands are symmetrical so the 360's stick placements are very uncomfortable for me.

To sum up, I can only game about an hour or so on the 360 without having to toss it down because it just doesn't provide what I want from a game controller.

I disagree, it is just to heavy! Maybe because have small hands and you have gorilla hands:P Sometimes i just feels like if i am holding a brick. Still love the xboc 360 tho.

Riderz13374835d ago

"The 360 pad is one of, if not THE best design for comfort."

Yeah well that's just like your opinion man. In MY opinion, the 360's analog sticks are atrocious in the fact that they are asymmetrical. Also the D-pad feels like a cheap piece of plastic. IT'S TERRIBLE.

Karpetburnz4834d ago

Man I totaly agree, thats one of the reasons I never owned up a Xbox back in the day, because I thought that having the Analog sticks asymmetrical is completely pointless and uncomfortable.

Now that Sony have improved on the daul shock based on what the fans wanted, I think its looking to be one of the best controllers to date.

chukamachine4835d ago

Dual shock is still the best controller for me, regardless of game.

Never liked the 360 design.

3-4-54835d ago

The 360 controller is the most comfortable controller ever built. It just fits better in the hands.

- It's tilted in which makes it easier to hold for longer gaming sessions

- The sticks are better because of the concave and they also feel better.

- Having dual sticks near the bottom too close together just makes it feel weird.

Dual shock is just not a good controller...it's awkward to hold and Sony should improve upon it's design.

It's a dated design that still works but not as good as it could. They should change it up about 10-20% in terms of overall feel and design.

It's too clunky.

wenaldy4835d ago (Edited 4835d ago )

Each on their own. You spoke about yourself.

r214835d ago

They put the dual sticks at the bottom for the thumbs. The ones that are symmetrical to each other, you know human hands.

ps3_pwns4835d ago

F the xbox. you gonna need to let go of the xbobx because the ps4 is the king ad will be king. you just gonna have to get used to that or crach and burn with a lot of waste cash on the new xbox dude. the return of the king ps4 back with avengence.

If you think the dualshock is too big, you're holding it wrong.

You don't hold it like this...

one2thr4835d ago

Honestly the only time i see people hold it like that, is if there playing a fighting games... I on the other, do not hold it like that when I play fighting games...

kingPoS4835d ago

So true! I learned the hard way playing mortal kombat like that. The DS3 fits best when your not trying to mold hands around it.

TotalHitman4835d ago

/facepalm, I meant if you think the dualshock is too small... you know what I mean lol :)

Pixel_Enemy4835d ago

That thing gave me freaking blisters haha. Maybe it was just that it was fused to my hands for a good portion of my childhood lol.

supremacy4835d ago

Looks fine to me, i just hope the sticks dont end feeling loose like ones in current dual shock 3 controllers.

But hey, we cant judge it until it has been on our hands.

kneon4835d ago

The looser sticks mean you can react faster, but they require more skill so they are not as noob friendly.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8516d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele16d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk16d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay16d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10117d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit16d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg16d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10116d ago (Edited 16d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14916d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle29d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit29d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog30d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog29d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad30d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_30d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage30d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda29d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
