New PlayStation Eyepad Controller patent discovered

It seems Sony has been working on a variety of controllers for PS4.

I think it's a cool name. The PDF states that it will work with PS3 and any new console.

jujubee884836d ago (Edited 4836d ago )

This is almost certainly going to be used for a next gen PS console (if it comes out).

Edit: Also, I do not think the document actually called it the 'Eyepad'.

... But it sounds better than the lookytablet (which is would I would like to call it!) :)

jujubee884836d ago (Edited 4836d ago )

Thanks to neogaf, I found out it was called "EyePad" in the .pdf,

"...hereafter reffered to as the EyePad..."

:D

GribbleGrunger4836d ago (Edited 4836d ago )

lol, yeah, I love it when a company has a sense of humour. They must have chuckled to themselves in the board room when naming this.

miyamoto4836d ago

funny you mentioned that

Originally called the iToy (short for "interactive toy") by the London branch, the webcam was later renamed to the EyeToy by Phil Harrison.

SilentNegotiator4836d ago (Edited 4836d ago )

I doubt that they would use that name for a final product.

Here we go....Playstation haters are here in full force (not you, Snookies), once again pretending that Nintendo invented the patent (tablets with controller bits, yeah, that didn't exist before Wii U /s) and acting like every patent is a Ps4 feature or something launching on Ps3 tomorrow.

Don't these guys ever get sick of kidding themselves?
Playstation haters are boringly predictable.

Neonridr4835d ago

lol, so are we going to now say that Sony was developing this long before Nintendo? I mean how many times do they have to come out with a strikingly "similar" product to a previously released Nintendo peripheral before we can call them copiers?

SilentNegotiator4835d ago (Edited 4835d ago )

No, I'm saying that Nintendo didn't invent the idea.

Oh noes! Sony is copying the company with an unoriginal idea!

And besides, all half-credible rumors are saying that the Ps4 will have a small touch PAD, not a touch SCREEN. I know some of you would love to see Sony "copy" a "Nintendo invented" idea so that you can continue on about SONY HAZ NO ORIGINAL IDEARS, but that's 95% likely not even the case.

xtremeimport4835d ago

I like the Vita because it has physical buttons as well as the option to touch. I use the touch to navigate the live screen but basically when it comes to games, i've always preferred the physical buttons. I hate games on the iphone because of that reason. touch just isnt as responsive and always feels kinda awkward.

Mounce4835d ago

Not to confuse 'eye' with 'i' in any way, of course :P Tehe.

Knight_Crawler4835d ago

The Playstation Eye Pad LMFAO!

What next Sony Eye Tunes.

Poor Sony, being at the bottom in every department must have them going mad.

StraightPath4835d ago

Wii u?

Sony copying once again

Snookies124835d ago (Edited 4835d ago )

It's not copying if you can do it better... That's just innovating. You take an idea and build upon it. If it sucks, by all means call it a copy, or a rip-off.

EZMickey4835d ago

@Snookies12 Actually it is still copying, regardless of whether it's done better or worse, it's still copying/imitating/mimicking.

Ironically if you look at the Move next to the Wii, Sony didn't "innovate", they just imitated but used better technology than Wii's controls and somehow Wii was still more successful by a ludicrous amount.

Even by your own logic (where did you come up with that anyway?), it's still copying because commercially they didn't do any better :/

GuyThatPlaysGames4835d ago

Apple will try to sue them for making it sound like Ipad lol

badz1494835d ago

When will people learn that not all patent will go into production? This will be just like millions of other patents...remain as a patent or a lawsuit weapon!

Sony are on a roll patenting everything they can.

MattyG4835d ago

Companies tend to patent a lot of things, even if they have no intention of ever making them. Just in case, you know?

MultiConsoleGamer4836d ago

Sony tablet controller confirmed.

It's move all over again.

In before "chicken and egg" arguments over Move and Wiimote tech.

Azurite4836d ago

Why bother if you know better?

jimbobwahey4836d ago

Nothing is confirmed you idiot.

dafegamer4836d ago

So you're saying that the Wii U controller is not an IPad?

dafegamer4836d ago

@ginsunuva sorry but nintendo didnt innovate the tablett, nor a touchscreen

SilentNegotiator4836d ago (Edited 4836d ago )

That's right, Nintendo invented Tablets with controller bits on it. There TOTALLY wasn't a bunch of devices doing that before Nintendo.
/s

And worst of all, you actually suggest that this confirms a tablet controller for the Ps4. When will you people learn that 90% of patents aren't used?

1Victor4835d ago

I agree with you silentNegotiator this is a move to block apple from using dual cameras for 3D video/pictures and allow Sony to came out with a 3D tablet

quantae064835d ago (Edited 4835d ago )

Nintendo were the first company to make a touchscreen controller on a video game console though.

SilentNegotiator4835d ago

@quantae06

Except the devices with touchscreens AND controller parts WERE the controllers to that hardware.

So, no, Nintendo really weren't the first to do that for a controller.

Qrphe4835d ago

Just like blocking used games was confirmed in the PS3 by that patent years ago.

Monkeycan84835d ago

I do have to say the tech for the "Move" was shown/recorded before the Wii was announced.

But i'm not sure when Nintendo patented or made up the Wii's motion controls.

If anyone knows let me know.

Neonridr4835d ago

2001 is when Nintendo first started their design. In that year, Nintendo licensed a number of motion-sensing patents from Gyration Inc, who they used to help build the Wiimote.

Monkeycan84835d ago

awesome!

Thank You Neon.

Cocozero4836d ago

I miss the days when Sony used to innovate and not copy.

They could have at least thought of a better name to make it less obvious

Monkeycan84836d ago

Do you say anything that isn't trolling?

THC CELL4836d ago

Hahaha according to Samsung apple stole the iPhone idea off Sony, god people are just stupid. Sony was inspired and made something that might be better..

subtenko4836d ago

What exactly is Sony copying? Having a tablet? Dude, do you know who Sony is? They are a massive electronics companies dating back to years ago. They DO innovate! But with things like computers, if one company makes a computer, it would be stupid if someone else couldnt make their own computer without being bugged by people like you saying "hey you copied them!"

You made an account on N4g but you wernt the first one; you copied them.

Good_Guy_Jamal4836d ago

Wow, way to rip off Nintendo AND Apple in one dell swoop. Really? EyePad?? WOW!

delboy4836d ago

Actually I like the above design, I mean copy.
Laughing so hard at Sony boys.

zebramocha4836d ago (Edited 4836d ago )

@delboy copy of what? The design would look like a square or rectangle because there are no other shape common among electronic devises.

@delboy it's just a patent, this doesn't confim they are coming out with a tablet controller but look at how it may work with future products.

delboy4836d ago

@zebramocha

Yep a square, but even then you can't copying it.
Look at apple vs samsung lawsuit, same would happen to Sony.
It's a Ipad, look at it. Lol

007Bond4836d ago

yeah those fanboys damn well know it's a cheap copy yet they still argue it's great haha!

KevPC4836d ago

by that logic even the wiiu controller is a copy

Ippiki Okami4835d ago

"Yep a square, but even then you can't copying it.
Look at apple vs samsung lawsuit, same would happen to Sony.
It's a Ipad, look at it. Lol"

....yeah just like the sony xperia tablet Z or S. WOW. You casual nintendrones are absolute morons.

you sure? i thought because ps eye + pad=eyepad and not because iPad...

subtenko4836d ago

Lol your comment straight out mentioned apple XD Nintendo ripped off Apple trying to be apple in this case but it's not working out for them like they hoped it would.

dafegamer4835d ago

rip off nintendo and apple? How does that work sir?
damn the sony hate from delusional trolls is frustrating

Qrphe4835d ago

>Apple patents iPad
>Sony patents tablet controller
>copying

Son, I don't think you know what a patent means

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8515d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele15d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk15d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay14d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10115d ago (Edited 15d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit14d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg14d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10114d ago (Edited 14d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14915d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle28d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit28d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog28d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog28d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad28d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_28d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage28d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda28d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
