Why I think Final Fantasy 13 Failed

FF13 fails because they couldn't use the hardware involved properly.

izumo_lee4851d ago

Also i read that the development of the game was in disarray. Each department did not agree in the direction the game was headed, and do you know is to blame for that.

Oh! the director Toriyama. It is his job to guide the team isn't it? It failed once he was named head of the main series.

wishingW3L4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

to this date I still don't understand how Square let that man direct the main FF series after FFX-2. The closest thing to a decent game that he has directed was Bahamut Lagoon and that game was a mess (only ultra niche nostalgia lovers dare to defend it).

I remember there was an interview with Sakaguchi about FF7 and he made fun of Toriyama because he always gave the weirdest ideas for the game and the team never agreed with him (he was against killing Aeris BTW). Sakaguchi gave some examples but I don't remember them now (edit: I remembered about one, the mistery panties! google it) and I tried to look for a link but couldn't find one but I think that after FFX-2 you should get my point. He just doesn't give a crap about consistency. lol

But what I fear the most is that if a FF7 remake ever happens you can be sure that Toriyama will be the one at the helm and he will ruin it.

Irishguy954851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

Toriyama was responible for the first 4-5 hours of FF7/

He's not a terrible develpor, he's actually quite good, but ONLY if he has someone else to guide him through his own ****ed up mind.

Toriyama was apparently going too far with the Cloud cross dressing scene and wanted the infamous childrens panties in. Where everyone else went "Woah woah, this is WAY too far, what are you on Toriyama there are limits you sick bastard"

Well..yeah. Toriyama never deserved the position of lead producer I don't know what madness led to that.

Dwalls11714851d ago

Well financially ff13 did not fail it sold over 6million units I think...

But what stopped it from maybe selling 9 or 10 million was how much square enix dumbed down the game.....microsoft was very popular at the time so square made the dumb decision to make this game multiplat....and due to the major technical limitations of 360, instead of putting their heart and soul, blood sweat and tears, throwing everything but the kitchen sink in it making it the huge deep experience we wanted....they dumbed it down and the product we got was ff13.....

ThanatosDMC4851d ago

It sold on name alone. FF13-2 didnt sell as much... I wonder why.

Same concept with Diablo 3. Sold 10+ million on name alone, but I highly doubt an expansion will sell as much after the crap they pulled by releasing an unfinished game.

Kalowest4851d ago

"I think Final Fantasy 13 Failed" because Motomu Toriyama was put in charge.

user39158004851d ago

Why it failed? Cause the game suck, I bought the first and finish it and to be honest, t was a linear game, with the lack of RPG worth been a jrpg. They tried to make it one way without branching off and to make matters worse, the playability nd level ups were awefull. It was like giving someone new and told them make an rpg of what you think it is, it lost the foundation from the first XI FF and what we have was pure garbage. Played the first. skip the second and now I will missed the third. Why? because they have zero vision, square suck now ever since the father of RPG was fired. Why ghe get fired? Because squaresoft wanted to make a movie and have hironobu do it, even when he told them the cost was too much and management did not care. This is what happens when management/executives and directors get inbolved, utter garbage comes out. Who gets fired? Employees of course its their fault. SquareEnix suck and squaresoft ruled.

Pozzle4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

Putting the blame on its lack of PS3 exclusivity isn't the way to go. Square made an average game. And it probably STILL would have been an average game even if it was a PS3 exclusive.

There's no reason a games developer can't make a great game on ANY hardware. The hardware has nothing to do with the lousy story, confusing dialogue, monotonous gameplay and bizarre design choices. That's Square's fault.

Godmars2904851d ago

Really missing why most here agreeing with me, yet the disagrees.

first1NFANTRY4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

It failed because it tried to appeal to a lager/casual audience instead of focusing on it's strengths from past iterations. Also the dvd9 format didn't help at all.

I played through a few parts at a friends house and i'm glad i still haven't bought it. There are better rpg's out there which could use the attention

Qrphe4851d ago

The choice of taking a break from the main storyline and screwing around everywhere in the world instead.
They went from making the most open-world FF game (XII) to the most linear one.

Outside_ofthe_Box4851d ago

***"They went from making the most open-world FF game (XII) to the most linear one."***

EXACTLY! FF13 failed because it was SUPER LINEAR. Huge step back from the open world of FF12 and not to mention the poor battle system.

animegamingnerd4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

who ever thought making a RPG linear was good idea should never work in this industry

Nerdmaster4851d ago

FFX was very linear and it's one of the best RPGs ever made. Linearity isn't the reason why FFXIII sucks.

Gamer394851d ago

Simply, boring and very linear.
I want old FF games style next-gen, VI, VII, VIII, IX. But i think its only dream..

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8517d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele17d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk17d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay17d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10118d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit17d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg17d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10117d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14917d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle30d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit30d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog31d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog30d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad31d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_30d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage30d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda30d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.

Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.

-Foxtrot51d ago (Edited 51d ago )

I was just going to say this, their biggest and top rated game here is TLOU2 for PC….it’s embarrassing.

Even Ubisoft and EA are ahead

Kind of surprised Nintendo is pretty low aswell, their biggest game is also a rerelease with the Switch 2 version of TotK.

StoneColdCrazy50d ago

That’s what happens when you start shutting down your own studios and forget what actually made you matter in the industry in the first place. Sony used to set the standard — now it feels like they’ve lost that identity. And if they decide to walk away from the PC market too, that’s going to be another huge mistake — that platform is only growing, and ignoring it now would just put them even further behind.

1Victor50d ago

@christopher:” Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.”
.
Why single out Sony? Microsoft didn’t do any better than the year before 5th same as Sony 9th and they have acquired activision and other mayor titles that have boosted their score massively from a 9th and Sony a 4th the year before the acquisitions.
Sony does need to do better without a doubt and I do hope they do take note but not the note of buying publishers is the way to succeed.

Christopher50d ago

1. Microsoft didn't get worse.
2. Sony got way worse.
3. Because Sony needs the criticism the most considering their publishing output this generation has been propped up by last gen ports and third-party developers for the most part.

50d ago
thesoftware73050d ago

1Victor,

I don't wanna speak for Christopher, but like most of us we recognize that Sony's output this Gen has been way below their own standards.

Also Sony did buy a fair amount of Devs, I know you will say they were not publishers, and don't compare in size, but they had their fair share of Aquisitions, including the very well established Bungie.

The overall point is with their stellar first party track record of the past, they should not be going down, they are singled out because they are some of the best videogame devs/publisher on the planet...no matter what reasons we attribute to the situation, they are moving in the wrong direction... period.

50d ago
KyRo50d ago

Its widely accept that Sony this generation has been underwhelming. We've had more peripheral releases, controller variants, PS5 accessories than games it feels like. The exclusives were also PS4 and what little output they have put exclusively on PS5 is nowhere near as memorable as what came in every generation before that.

This isn't a Sony hate post but anyone who's older and has been around for a long time gaming will agree that PS5 is by far Sony's worst generation. As much as Xbox is in the gutter, I pray the do bounce back in the hope we get Sony to wake up again.

darthv7249d ago (Edited 49d ago )

If you want to critique MS... you are doing so towards their management. The games output and their hardware have been much better than PS this gen. Sadly... people still hold a grudge against XB because of MS. Thankfully i am not that petty... I've been enjoying their games output in the drought of PS. And add in some NS1/2 games as well to balance things out. Things will change for me once Wolverine hits, and I start using my 5 more. That one I'm looking forward to. And the Marvel fighter... I'm not a GTA player so that has no bearing on my view of things.

Big part of that has been the live service push resulting in cancellation or flop after flop but when they put out the games their fans want we get amazing stuff like astro bot

Leadership really screwed the pooch trend chasing

Well I apologize I was wrong about not doing worse but my statement of Microsoft getting a boost still stand 🤷🏿

50d ago
1Victor50d ago

Well OBSCURED unlike you I’m honorable enough to recognize when I’m wrong and apologize.
.
@ The software you know there’s no comparison between what Microsoft acquired and what Sony acquired that’s why you tried to get ahead of the conversation, yes we all know Sony can do better than what they have done this gen but they inhaled the poison GAS they thought would bring money for years but we make sure they got the message and quite a few games got cancelled you know as well a hit like that take years to be corrected and by now they hopefully will have taken steps away from the GAS and slowed their approach to them.

But... but... the garbage-mongers always tell us that Square Enix is in trouble! 😂

Christopher51d ago

Square doesn't help that it fear mongers itself with ridiculous 'goals' that they can't reach and then they proclaim failure if they don't reach it. They're quite freaking profitable and people act like they're dying.

SimulationDaily51d ago (Edited 51d ago )

Keep in mind that these "proclamations" are usually third-hand bad translations from somedude who was at the investor conference, posted on Twitter, and picked up by press and youtubers like they were gold, and then when the official translation comes out, they're much softer statements, but at that point, the damage is done.

being number one on these things does not indicate how "well" their games do selling wise.
