Microsoft and Sony do well because their console are the golden age of gaming - a 7 year constant stream (overkill) of "AAA" huge budget and technical quality games - these consoles have made gaming a mainstream hobby for 20+ and 25+ people with their own income and households, with game budgets and tech advancement skyrocketing throughout the generation.

the DS and 3DS do well because they became the go-to premium and state of the art gaming toy for children, making handheld gaming a mainstream phenomenon among families.

If anything, the GB and GBA were the ones that brought handhelds the mainstream success among children, since those two systems were rarely bought and played by teens and adults.

The DS in particular opened the door for all types of gamers to become interested in handheld gaming, and gaming in general. Kids, teens, young adults, the middle aged and elderly, it didn't matter who, the DS sold to pretty much every demographic, and brought the mainstream (i.e "casual" gamer) to the market well before the Wii or even smartphones/tablets did. In fact, a large portion of the success that the Wii and smartphones/tablets are seeing now can all be attributed to the breakout success that the DS was.

That doesn't make the DS a toy, since toys are incredibly simplistic, are relatively cheap and for the most part require the imagination for extended periods of enjoyment. The DS, and for that matter, the 3DS, are both portable game systems looking to appeal to a wide array of demographics. This is evidenced by the fact that both systems libraries have a wide array of content, and that developers simply didn't/don't just support both platforms with shovelware and social games. Smartphones and tablets are now trying to replicate the DS model by getting more legitimate developer support and advertising more frequently the wide array of games available on those machines.

Now, with all that said, the 3DS won't even come close to the DS in terms of sales. The DS was a worldwide phenomenon and essentially shaped the markets for handheld devices. The 3DS on the other hand looks to be more of a gamer's system just based on the type of games that have been made for it in its first two years. However, i could be wrong, pending on how the worldwide consumer base responds to the extremely popular Animal Crossing (don't ask me why it's popular, I don't have the slightest idea why) and 6th gen Pokemon.

Honestly, it's an amazing level of brainwashing. As someone who sells video games and systems in the US, I'm still amazed at how people believe that certain multiplat games are exclusive to the 360(Call of Duty still gets this).

And then there's the fact that, after so long, people are now heavily invested in the 360. They've got their achievements and their friends lists that are seven years old, and that's hard to give up.

Interesting that, according to this and the European charts, the PS3 and 360 are neck and neck. Wonder how adding in Japan and the UK would change that.
