Why the PS2 Was So Successful

The news that the PS2 officially ended its manufacturing hit the Twinfinite offices pretty hard last week. Tears were shed. It is without a doubt, the end of an era. Since our site has a certain affinity for the number 2, the PS2 has meant something a bit more. Not only was it a great console, but many have decreed it the greatest console.

What made the little black box so amazing in a world full of quirky Nintendo consoles and Microsoft’s big black behemoth?

because most 3rd party devs developed exclusively for it. But why they did that? It was a combination of the hype, brand name at the time and good timing.

"WHY THE PS2 SO SUCCESSFUL"
Do we really need to answer that???

VARIETY,VARIETY,VARIETY!!!! something ps3 is missing greatly fps,and multiplayer only games don't count as selection of variety of games more like single minded games. ( developers) stuck on FPS.

We need more VARIETY!!!!!! we need a PETITION, boycott developers no more first person shooters, no more first person shooters!!!!

caseh4872d ago

There's plenty of variety out there, not every game released is an FPS. I have about 80 PS3 games and only two of them are FPS games.

As for PS2 success, Sega alienated all 3rd party devs and went under as a result, Xbox was very late to the party and Gamecube had a fraction of the games and was seen by many as a console for kids.

Hardly rocket science is it.

miyamoto4872d ago

PS2 had the perfect balance of power, price and performance, multi purpose functionality CD DVD games, backward compatibility, balance of Japanese and western games, variety , diversity of game types, experimental and mainstream games, worldwide appeal, upgradability,

It definitely comes down to games.

But also, it has to do with a widening market. The stigmata surrounding gaming lifted around the time the PS2 came out. Arcades weren't those dark dens full of sweaty nerds, because arcades weren't around anymore. The internet wasn't the domain of WoW geeks, because the internet hadn't been integrated into gaming quite yet. More and more people who grew up with Nintendo and SEGA thought to themselves "maybe gaming isn't so bad. Let's try it". And lo, here's the PS2, the successor to the highest-selling console of all time.

For me it was the quality and quantity of fantastic games, and backwards compability

Irishguy954872d ago

Highest amount of quality games by a long shot. Was the 'thing' to get for casuals and kids too.

Yangus4872d ago

Why? Simple. Many awesome games. End.

BitbyDeath4872d ago

Cause it came out before Xbox

nolifeking4872d ago

I remember a dream use, dreamers some dream coming first, but what do I know of facts or history?

BitbyDeath4872d ago (Edited 4872d ago )

I think it's a valid point.
Look what it did for the 360, turned a 30million dollar seller into a 70 million one.

People underestimate the power of releasing first, once peoples friends buy them then they gotta get one as well so they can trade games and talk about them + online etc.

If 360 and PS3 switched release dates i'd imagine the PS3 would be almost if not just as popular as the PS2.

Playstation has the games but it can only carry them so far.

Knight_Crawler4871d ago

I agree with you but I think the PS3 priced at $600 would still be an issue for most people and they would have waited to see what MS would had offer and at what price.

The 360 relaseing 1 year after the PS3 would have also been good for MS becuase they would have time to fix the RROS issue and also they would have gotten to see what Sony's final product was.

dedicatedtogamers4871d ago

The Dreamcast launched prior to the PS2. The Saturn and Neo Geo CD also launched prior to the PS1.

Derp.

SilentNegotiator4872d ago

Everyone knows that you are to ignore head starts.

xPhearR3dx4872d ago

I agree with BitbyDeath, I was also a Playstation guy. LOVED the PS2, still my favorite console from every generation. However, when the 360 released, my friends had it and I wanted one. I HATED the original Xbox with a passion but loved the 360 at the time. So I bought one since the PS3 hadn't came out yet. I got a PS3 when it came out though, but I was so involved with the 360 and tons of my PS2 friends converted that I just stuck with it.

Had the PS3 came out at the same time or first, I probably would have never looked twice at the 360.

Ult iMate4872d ago

...And for the lower price, which is also important for the majority of average consumers.

Alanah Addresses God of War's Sex Scenes

Alanah Pearce, who was a writer at Sony Santa Monica for several years and worked on God of War Ragnarök, has shed more light on the sex minigames which cropped up in the series' earlier entries.

So let me get this right Corey said he didn’t want to spend 15 years of his life on the one franchise and decided to do a new IP which is why he didn’t do Ragnarok…but his new game is now a God of War prequel about a character who’s dead using Norse mythology.

I don’t get it, I thought it would be a brand new IP

Lightning7776d ago

Corey's game was suppose to be a new AAA scifi game. If it's GoW spin off that shouldn't take 8 years to develop, its kinda weird.

I think it got scrapped.

Christopher76d ago

Not sure, but if it's a new IP with new writers, new concepts, and the like that formed up mostly after the last game, I wouldn't expect much out of them for another two years at least. I'm not saying it isn't canned, just he wouldn't start on it until Ragnarok was done and they have a long cycles for new IP development.

Santa Monica has built up enough and utilizes other in-house Sony studios to support their stuff often, so I wouldn't be surprised if they can juggle many new games at once. Especially with Sony now pushing for more support after their Live Service decisions.

Cacabunga76d ago

I hope we get something to get excited about.. has been dry for a long while from WW studios

Eonjay76d ago

What are you basing the idea that the GOW spinoff is Corey's game? Wouldn't that make more sense to have the team that did Ragnarok produce the rumored title?

-Foxtrot76d ago (Edited 76d ago )

Why? Because it’s been 8 f***** years at this point since the 2018 game.

Corey’s is expected since he’s been working on his for longer

To have the God of War Ragnarok team put out Valhalla DLC and this new title 5 years after the last game while Corey’s is still a no show would be insane at this point.

The leakers point to this being his game aswell.

Profchaos76d ago

I agree i think i smell shite

KyRo75d ago

I hate how predictable Sony Studios have become. They are pretty much the GOW, Horizon and Spiderman studios now. They are great games but let's mix it up a bit. We used to give Xbox sh*t back in the day for being the Forza, Halo, Gears rinse and repeat but Sony is becoming the same.

Eonjay75d ago

The next four games coming out from Sony Studios are:
Marathon
Saros
Wolverine
Intergalactic
This is after Ghost of Yotei and Astrobot. So its more than a bit of a stretch to claim the are only doing God of War, Spiderman and Horizon.

KyRo75d ago

Eon, Marathon is on other platforms and something Bungie was working on before the Sony buyout.
Wolverine is yet another superhero third person cinematic melee combat game.
Intergalactic is another cinematic, third person melee combat game from what we know.
Saros is nothing more than Returnal reskin so far. It's all very boring, uninspired and safe.

Releasing other games doesn't mean they're not heavily relying on the same IPs over and over again just as Xbox did back in the day.

__SteakDeck__75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

@KyRo Now you’re contradicting yourself. First you say, PS is releasing the same franchises. But when @Eonjay gave you a list of the new franchises PS is working on, you’re going back to the usual Xbox fanboy talking points, saying they’re just more 3rd person games. Just be quiet man. Also. I wonder if you have the same take about Nintendo because they have been releasing the same franchises for 40 years.

__SteakDeck__75d ago

@-Foxtrot Seems like Cory had this planned for years. https://fandomwire.com/it-i...

He also teased it in his IGN interview after GOW 2018 released.

Lightning7777d ago

So they were suppose to be working on s New AAA IP something in the scifi genre. Did that get scrapped? They pulled back on LS and refocusing on the platform. Does that also mean less risks in the AAA space and going back to the same ip

LucasRuinedChildhood77d ago (Edited 77d ago )

"Does that also mean less risks in the AAA space and going back to the same ip"

Sony Santa Monica games:

God of War: Ascension (2013) - PS3
God of War (2018) - PS4
God of War Ragnarok (2022) - PS5
God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla (2023) - PS5

God of War: Ghost of Sparta (2010) - PSP
God of War: Sons of Sparta (2026) - PS5

Lightning7777d ago

It was rumors they were doing a game that wasn't GoW at all but a brand new IP entirely.

fr0sty76d ago

Likely another team doing the new GOW while Corey works on the new project.

Mr Logic76d ago

You're confused. The sci-fi game was being directed by Stig Asmussen after GOW3. They worked on it for 3-4 years until it was canceled and he left the studio.

Extermin8or3_76d ago

The science fiction game was scrapped a decade ago. People are getting stuff mixed up. We never had any info what Corey's project actually was.

Zeke6875d ago

He said himself "I would love to do something completely different, sci-fi would be fun to explore" We will see what I do, but I wont work on next God Of War".

That was just months after GoW 2018 was released.
So nothing gets ""mixed up". When he said that most of us hoped he would indeed do a sci.fi game to mix things up a little. Sadly Sony seems to have pulled the reins on that.

Extermin8or3_75d ago

@Zeke68 Sony have pulled the reigns on nothing there is literally an interview form about 6 years ago where he talks about the fact he has a prequel story he'd like to see told but it has to come after Ragnarok. He even hints at Faye being playable/protagonist. The game won't be called god of war either apparently.

Jin_Sakai76d ago (Edited 76d ago )

Try something new already!

__SteakDeck__75d ago

Do you want Nintendo to try something new as well? Because they keep releasing Mario and Zelda. GOW is PS’s biggest franchise. You don’t move on from that.

GrmpyolGamer 76d ago

If that's true then it's not really a God of War game then is it

jznrpg76d ago

If it’s fun with a good story I am fine with it. Definitely unexpected but that could end up being a good thing. Only time will tell.
