21 Consoles And Handhelds That Crashed And Burned

From Tom's Hardware

The history of video games is littered with consoles that were epic fiascoes. Most were just bad platforms that either lacked in performance, compelling software, or a true market niche. But some had a good chance at success that was spoiled by management issues, marketing gaffes, or a lack of relationships in the software development community.

We present 20 console failures that have left their marks on history.

Why is the vita on that list...lol Do they know something we don't.What about PSPgo?

MikeMyers4877d ago (Edited 4877d ago )

The PSP Go will have crashed and burned more than Vita. Vita has already sold about 2 million and it's only been less than a year. Give it time. I just don't see it being as adopted as the PSP and it's not because of the system. I think it has been poorly marketed and because it is seen as a higher end device it has to compete more with other gadgets. Still a far cry from viewing it as crashing and burning.

2013 will have to be a big year for Sony and Vita. They cannot afford for the system to be forgotten. It also needs real 3rd party commitment. Not rushed projects like Call of Duty or watered down existing ips.

360ICE4877d ago

PSPgo crashed and burned for sure. But it's a re-release. And yeah, I would hold PS Vita. It hasn't been around long enough to be talked about in the past tense.

Btw. No console that has Gravity Rush will ever be a complete failure. Look it up in the Geneva convention.

Amen.

I love my vita, and the tons of games I have on it.

SilentNegotiator4876d ago (Edited 4876d ago )

What pitiful trolling for hits. Making a list of 20 and then tacking on a ~1 year old system?

Reported as lame.

the vita has sold 4 million so far.

rbailey4877d ago

Vita sold 4 million units but where are the GAMES? In my opinion that right there is the exact reason why its in this article.

I didn't know such ignorant gamers still left...

MmaFan-Qc4877d ago (Edited 4877d ago )

yeah right, ps vita has no games.... excepted

Uncharted Golden Abyss
Touch My Katamari(aww yeah, TOUCH IT!)
GravityRush
SoundShape
Ragnarock Odyssey
LBP:PsVita
SuperStardustDelta
DJMAX:Technika Tune
Lumines:Electronic Symphony
Persona4:Golden
Mutant Blobs Attack
ZEN Pinball 2(perfect for handheld)
Sonic&All Stars Racing Transformed(even better than MK7)
(MortalKombat and SFxTekken, fighting games on the go? ...CMON!thats awesome!)
shit load of great psp games
ps1 classics
and now with the cross-buy fonction, even more games on the go.

so honestly if you dont see games, ..then its simply because you can't see further than the end of your nose.

what's next? the "PsTripple has no games" bullshit again?

...yep, no games.

Aceman184877d ago

@Ult

i just checked both lists and it seems the vita games are rated better in its first year so there are games for it like most people have so, but i also noticed that most users are stupid because they rated uncharted card game higher than the actual action games wth is that about lol.

InTheLab4877d ago

The PspGo is just a PSP. Much like the DSlite or PS Slim.

The author also acknowledges the trolling so...yeah.

Also, the Ouya isnt even out yet and it's on the obnoxious 20 page clickathon list.

CommonSenseGamer4877d ago (Edited 4877d ago )

Even though I owned a Go I'm not afraid to admit it tanked. I'm just surprised it tanked worse than the last PSP model that didn't include WiFi.

What if the Vita does fail, what might that mean for the PS4 and garnering developer support and consumer appeal.

iamnsuperman4877d ago (Edited 4877d ago )

Alright, so we're trolling a bit. But there's a kernel of truth to our jest.

You right. This way people have to click next 21 times to get to what you say about the vita. Come on those console that have crashed and burned mean they have not done well and so it has to cease production (a.k.a psp go). The Vita isnt over yet with some quality titles this year. Wait till Sony announce the cease in production before it can be considered

amaguli4877d ago

21 consoles, 21-pages. I suffered through it so you didn't have to.

ColecoVision
Vectrex
Atari 7800
PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16
Atari Lynx
Amstrad GX4000
Commodore 64GS
PC Engine GT/TurboExpress
Philips CD-i
Commodore CDTV
3DO
Atari Jaguar
Pioneer LaserActive
Apple Bandai Pippin
Nintendo Virtual Boy
Tiger Game.com
Neo Geo Pocket Color
N-Gage
Gizmondo
The Phantom
PS Vita

There is seriously no need for a 21-page list. Next time consider a 7-page max list if you are going to attempt something like this again.

EddieNX 4877d ago

There is a distinct lack of Sega saturn , Sega CD , 32X and Dreamcast. Whilst all amazing , they ''Crashed and burned'' financialy for Sega.

InTheLab4877d ago

add the N64, Xbox, and Gamecube. Both Nintendo consoles sold less than the NES combined...and the Xbox sold slightly more than the GC...

deafdani4877d ago (Edited 4877d ago )

The Dreamcast didn't exactly crash and burn... it was actually selling pretty well. The problem was that Sega needed a fucking miracle to get out of their financial troubles, and the Dreamcast sales just weren't enough to put them out of the shithole they dug themselves.

If Sega wasn't already massively broke because of their stupid previous decisions (Saturn, Sega CD, 32X, Nomad and Game Gear), then they could have done well with the Dreamcast, actually. Even with the PS2 destroying everything in the market.

@InTheLab: Nintendo saw a nice profit even with the sales of the N64 and Gamecube, actually.

Whereas Microsoft sustained massive financial losses with the original Xbox, Nintendo apparently only took a pretty slight initial loss per console sold within the first 6 months or so of the Gamecube's life. After that, every Gamecube sold turned a profit for them, so in the end, they did well. Not a massive success, but definitely not a "crash and burn".

And N64 sold more than the Gamecube, and with profit from day one.

And I wouldn't call the Xbox a "crash and burn", exactly, because Microsoft took that massive loss in purpose. It was their intention all along, to establish a brand, and now the Xbox 360 is reaping the benefits from that. It was a pretty long time plan.

ShaunCameron4877d ago

@ deafdani

And let's not forget that $80 000 000 game that exacerbated their financial woes.

RuperttheBear4876d ago

@

'add the N64, Xbox, and Gamecube.'

They still, each, sold over 20 million units, the n64 sold over 30 million. The N64 and the Gamecube were still profitable for Nintendo, and the Xbox laid the foundation for MS to gain a much bigger market share with the 360.

They certainly didn't 'crash and burn'.

MultiConsoleGamer4877d ago

Thanks for posting the full list.

The author of this article is an idiot of he thinks the PC Engine "crashed and burned."

And ColecoVision sold something like 3 million units, which for the early 80s was fairly good.

And hilariously enough, he does't have the Atari 5200 on the list. It's one of Atari's most costly disasters.

Amplitude4877d ago

Based off the comments saying that its a 21-page list and the fact that theres a vita on the picture, im not even gonna click this guy's website.

Zhipp4877d ago (Edited 4877d ago )

"This guy"? You've never heard of Tom's Hardware?

EDIT: Also, it may be 21 pages, but only the section of the page that contains the content has to be reloaded each time you change the page. It's a lot more bare-able than IGN's system.

Cam9774877d ago (Edited 4877d ago )

I've just got my PS+ Music Unlimited trial and WOW! It is absolutely amazing! I can now play games on my Vita listening to any song I like, I wish I'd bought it at the reduced price a few weeks ago. And PS Vita, I can tell the writer merely dislikes the console because I think it's done better than a few consoles on that lengthy list. DO NOT VIEW THE LINK, THE FOOL GETS REVENUE FROM EVERY CHEAPSKATE SLIDESHOW SCREEN.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle22d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn223d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn222d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown23d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay23d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay23d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac22d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger23d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300023d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde23d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde22d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

Five Games I'd Love To See On the Neo Geo AES+

These classics need to make a return.

Blues Journey is the game I'd like to see.

Popsicle24d ago

Pre-ordered mine a few days ago. Love this concept and hope there are more games announced. I can’t justify paying the prices for games that collectors are asking for. It’s the primary reason I own almost every console except the Neo Geo.

Agent7524d ago

I've pre ordered one here in the UK, no games though, as I'll move it on for a higher price. The white model looks awesome, but as expected, the price is too high. We'll probably see more of those all in one cartridges from China containing every AES game. In the UK, AES+ game at £70 ($95) is better than eye watering prices for the originals, but these games are so old and I can honestly say SNK didn't release many classics. The Metal Slug series is the only series I rate, there were just too many Street Fighter clones and not enough scrolling fighting games. Overall, the Neo Geo was poor for all genres apart from one on one fighters. Videos on YouTube asking for games from that console generation to be ported to the AES+, but who'd want to pay £70 for Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2? There's a lot of SNK collections out there, the best being Metal Slug Anthology on the PlayStation 2. The Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on the Switch contains 12 games for around £30, instead of £840 if released on the AES+. For collectors, the AES+ is the best news since sliced bread. Are there enough SNK fans out there? Nowhere near. Those £70 cartridges will soon start creeping up in price and it'll be a re-run of the original console.

Flenter24d ago

I always wanted one in the 90's but couldn't afford it. Now i can but i think if i get one it will be collecting dust fast. It's a nostalgia thing i guess.
