Game Revolution: Devil May Cry 4 Review

Geoff Hunt of Game Revolution writes: I've played the first two Devil May Cry games, and found them to be tedious action games with more visual flair than enjoyable gameplay. I frankly thought of them like one of the Dynasty Warriors games, just riddled with bad camera angles and fancier moves.

Devil May Cry 4 really isn't wildly different per se. The same horrendous camera angles that inhibit successful combat are omnipresent, opponents still punish you for needing to wrestle with annoying level design, there are invisible walls galore to prevent you from wandering around as you want to, and there are at least as many minutes spent in cutscenes as spent playing the actual game.

+ Slick animations
+ Gobs of style
+ Fun boss fights

- Too little substance
- Crappy music
- Rice-paper thin storyline
- Cheer up, Emo Nero

horrible review. How the hell is Nero emo? By invisible walls does he mean that you can't jump off the bridge in the game? Cause I have yet to encounter an "invisible wall" within 4 playthroughs.

DMC2 ranked 2nd and also DmC ranked 3rd?
What a load of BS!

ABizzel1397d ago

IMO

6. DMC2 6/10
5. DMC4 7.5/10 (Hated Nero, repeat bosses, Dante was the saving grace but only about half the game)
4. DmC 7.5/10 (solid overall, some great ideas, meh story, dialog sucked, and the director almost killed DMC)
3. DMC1 8.5/10 (all around solid)
2. DMC5 9/10 (carried by Dante & Nero gameplay, I didn’t like V’s, Nero’s better but still not a fan)
1. DCM3 10/10 (chef’s kiss)

Well, it worked.

This nothingburger of a opinion article got a lot of views and comments.

WHAT!? who in their right mind would put 2 near the top (not at the bottom) unironically?
I think all of them are worth playing in their own right honestly, except 2 unless you REALLY want to experience the whole series.

FinalFantasyFanatic396d ago (Edited 396d ago )

I honestly don't know what the author was smoking, personally I'd rank DMC3 as no.1, maybe DMC5 as second, DMC1 as third, DMC4 as fourth, and DMC as fifth and DMC2 last. such a bizarre list, mybe the author just has strange taste.

DMC2 anywhere but last is crazy. Awful list overall.

BlaqMagiq1397d ago

"Devil May Cry 2 isn’t trash. It’s just misunderstood by a fanbase that doesn’t like change."

This and putting DMC 2 number 2 is all I need to ignore this ranking. DMC2 is absolute trash and it's clear this person doesn't understand exactly why.

Flenter397d ago

For me: 3,1,5,4,2 and then .....Dmc

fsfsxii397d ago (Edited 397d ago )

Why is DmC last? Genuinely curious.

lellkay397d ago (Edited 397d ago )

Dmc is far superior to DMC2 come on

"almost 20-year-old series"

It's 24 years old.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC758d ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Exvalos757d ago

What a weird name, it's essentially devil may cry, devil may cry lol

Cacabunga757d ago

Best to good for me: 3, reboot, 1, 5

2 and 4 are trash, didnt like any of them.
5 has very good gameplay variety but i hated the foes.. it is just insects the whole time. Reboot has the best foes for me

Friendlygamer758d ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

monkey602758d ago (Edited 758d ago )

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

Yui_Suzumiya758d ago

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

DarXyde758d ago

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me

SeTTriP758d ago

This right here is my order as I thought DMC 5 was amazing and obviously 3 comes after 4 was great and 1 for the nastilgic value it holds 2 was so terrible that my local GameStop gave full refunds to people who returned it.

Bless the adorably all digital future! When it comes to PC games its not as big of an issue because there should always be another way to access single player games, but still, I hate to see anything get delisted.

Aaroncls7836d ago

Well, DMC4 special edition has a lot of issues to run from Steam.
I have to get a modded executable to even be able to run the game on Windows 10.
Not sure if it is because the game runs in DirectX10 or what, but it sucks they have not even tried to fix it.

Sephiroushin834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

DMC4 Special Edition is not delisted, it was just the standard version, it has nothing to do with issues of performance or anything alike. Its just that Capcom probably do not want to sell the standard version, neither the standalone DMC3 version.
