i really think that Sony does have a 10 yr plan with the ps3 since they pushed for blu-ray inclusion. their plan with the ps2 has been nothing less than stellar so if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? ps3 will be here for a while. MS will push for the next machine in 3-4 yrs after they generate enough software profit from the 360 with the install base; they need to reaffirm consumer trust with the rrod issues, however rampant (or not) they are. I can see the Wii being around for another 6-7 yrs since it caters to such a wide demographic of people and for the sheer fact that Nintendo is so innovative that they'll figure things out that will keep people hooked.

the only good point this guy made is the fact that systems usually change within 5 years which is really no point at all... out of all the systems nintendo is the only one that has the advantage going to the next generation and going sooner.. if nintendo can get a system more powerful then the xbox 360, easy to develop for and with a new interface for controlling games going forward , cause they are still going to have the momentum from this generation ..then if nintendo launches first its almost a done deal that they will be in first place.

I don't believe Sony will jump the Next-gen wagon as soon as Microsoft because the PS3 is in its infancy year and by the time the Xbox 720 (probably in 09/10), the PS3 will carry a pricetag under $250 and probably a smaller model. This only, will affect 720's sales thus hurting it's headstart.

Us gamers sure like to get ahead of ourselves, eh?

I bet Nintendo fans and some Microsoft fans might be a little cautious. I do know Sony will launch for a cheaper price than Microsoft (or at least the same price with higher end features) because they are paying for the high end Technology now, and it's getting cheaper everyday.

who purchased a Wii would not find the need to upgrade to a newer model. As they are mostly casual players and obviously are not in need of cutting edge technology.

I meant software as in games in general. MS will sell a lot of software as indicated by their successful revenue with first and third party software. but yeah, you're right, i'm not really talking about games off Live.

Imagine how sick the graphics will be for the next gen of systems! At that point we will be talking about how the "crappy games" for these new systems look old and dated like that game crysis from 07. WTF. PS3 hardware, intentionally, was developed to be able to sustain software development requirements for many years. Now with 100GB Blu-ray quad-layer disks, PS3 developers are nowhere near the hardware limitation as implied by this moron. Developers are already saying with 50GB disks and the largely unexplored CBE processor that only 20% of the PS3's potential has been harnessed to a reasonable extent. This is not to toot Sony's horn but I'm just making an example of Hardware being much further ahead of Software in modern gaming development.

I predict a PS4 is nowhere near close to coming out, and the next Microsoft console will take a major dent in sales because of consumer skepticism of the RROD, even though they probably would have invested millions of dollars to make sure that isn't an issue again.

Most likely either company won't launch anything until 2011. DirectX 11 should be out at that time and it would be perfect time to launch something new for Microsoft. Since their next version of Windows could be setup to work on their next console as well. Lots of new features for computers are set for that time frame as well. Sony and Nintendo will likely launch around the same timeframe in 2011-2013. I expect at least two of them to launch something in 2011 with the other following them in 2012 or 2013.

whenever the new "trend" or "next best thing" comes out, that's what the majority of people will want. Xbox 3 will come first, have new technology and new innovations. Whos gonna want a ps3 with a ten year lifespan with last gen games. Xbox 1 proved to be more powerful than ps2 when it came out that's why a majority of gamers switched sides. Same thing will happen next generation.

Not everyone cares for games like F@gnalFantasy or dragon slayer or lair wtf it is.

the thing sony must do to counter the next Xbox is to release the PS3 slim with a price tag below $200 in the same month.
certainly people will go for the most attractive package , the cheaper console with the bigger catalog of games rather than spending $400+ on a console with few launch games , and damaged reputation

w/e happens, i hope one of the companies will decide to shove a Ton of RAM in the box or at least make a console that can be upgraded with RAM/etc (N64 did it!). the consoles we have this gen are still to this day competitive with PC's except in the area of RAM; hope that will change

Consider the entire generation of game consoles. In doing so, one might realize that the length in which any console sustains is determined solely by YOU; the bumbling, geeky, obnoxious consumer. Simple enough? Not quite. In the end, hardware specs- in relation to its competitor- typically mean nothing unless it essentially equates to compatibility with the AVERAGE consumer.

AS such, PS3's lifespan will not be prolonged due to its "potential", but its relation to the consumer. That is, if the consumer suddenly begins to crave for PS3sque type games, only available through Sony's Trojan horse (Blu Ray), than expect a continued life cycle for the pearly machine. Once again, it does not matter how much "stuff" the PS3 can do, but whether or not anybody is looking for that type of substance.

Take PS2, for instance, a very simple graphics machine by even yesterday's standards; however, what belied this outwardly simple design was its gaming catalog, in addition to its dual functionality as a DVD player. Already, one should recognize just how such a machine equates to "average consumer computability". In essence, the PS2 could boast:

"whatever you want, whatever you crave- we can do it, albeit not the best, but you'll never see a gaming spectrum quite as large as ours."

WOW! Just think how much freedom this gives to the AVERAGE consumer, not particularly fond of any, one genre. Suddenly, gaming was simple and quick; not notoriously long and geeky. This brief summary, in effect, defines the legacy of PS2. Absolute compatibility.

Not so with the PS3, however! Why? In a word, blu. To explain, by placing the PS3 as the *premiere" hardware console, Sony has (perhaps unintentionally) barred itself from the "fast food gamer"; those of us who like a quick touchdown, free throw, or shoot em' up on the go. Its a fast lane, and indeed this analysis on my part explains the success of Wii.

Microsoft, on the other hand, is stuck in a catch twenty-two. It is both hardcore, and not hardcore- a description which only would confuse the typical passerby. As a result, Microsoft is pushing for the casual audience, not through MGS4, or KZ2- but Banjo, Scene it, and other lame games (not successfully, I might add).

So what PS3's route? To conclude, its all about how blu we gamers, and simpletons become. That is PS3's genuine ticket, and if said technology fails to attract a mainstream audience... forget the "potential", forget the developers, its back to business as usual.

Yeah ok the PS1 got discontinued after the PS3 but were you still buying games for the PS1 ? do you know anybody who's still playing on their PS1? NO NO and NO.

The PS3 will never dominate again because at this pace considering that the 360 price drop and GEow 2 etc have 0 impact on the 360 sales it will take the PS3 4/5 years to catch up and thats if the 360 sales never increase again which I doubt because of system movers like Geow 2 and the price drop. Look at stats before yapping.
And please expalin WHY would MSFT carry on supporting a console that brings in 0 revenue and that is being outsold 10:1 by its competitor (ps2).

Sony does not give a DAMN about you having a PS2 , they only reason they are still supporting it is because its still selling like crazy and helps bring in the money the PS3 isnt bringing inotherwise they wouldnt have dropped the price twice in one year.) and not because they care about their customers , between customers and money they would choose money anyday of the week.

It has been happening in the pc industry for years and will trickle into the consumer market just as quickly. The turn around for changes in consumer electronics are only going to get faster. It used to be that intel would release a new chip every other year but thanks to competition and the drive to stay on top they have pushed their yeilds to 6-8 months or sooner. It happens in the graphics market as well.

Considering the ps3 and 360 are basically PC's in a console coating it is foolish to think that as progression is made for faster cpu/gpu's that these two (excuse me...3) console companies would really stand behind their idea of a long lasting effect on the current console business. We all can pretty much agree that work is being done on the successor systems.

The newly announced nvidia and ati gpus are being considered but you know that both companies are being tapped to work on what would be considered the "power" of the 2010-2011 timeframe. Storage medium is changing as well. Blu is good for movies but if you look at how long it took to go from record to tape to cd you will see that it was quicker each generation. Tape to dvd to blu to...? will be a much faster incarnation.

Sorry sony but the only way you will get 10 years out of each system is if you gimp the successor long enough to keep people subdued.

I predict such a huge leap with Sony w/ the PS4 it's scary.
They'll make a totally new engine inside to work w/ the expanded improvements of the Cell Broadband Engine, RSX, upgrade Blu-ray to match OLED technlogy, etc.
Since Sony loves it's consumers they'll make us wait a little bit until they perfect it.

It's still too early to be thinking about the next age of consoles when it's only been like 3 years this gen.

But if you look at it from a technology stand point Sony has the mind to go and make it towards the next stage.

As a said in an article about the PS4 by Ken Kutaragi, "There will be no comparison between the PS4 and other consoles."

PS3 has some amazing titles only possible on the PS3 coming out very soon.

As much as I love technology, Sony is on drugs if they think I am going to run out and purchase a super tv in the next year after just buying a new 42" LCD this year. Same with Microsoft if they think I am going to purchase a new console 4 years of the 360 launched. 6-7 years is the best turn around time. Also at this point I would wait a year or two before even buying the thing to see what Sony had planned. No more early adaptor ever again with the poor console quality of Microsoft and the lack of games (not currently) of Sony. Plus the Wii was a waste of my money.....

There's no way Sony would introduce a new console only 4-5 years from now. PS3 needs time to grow and it will have a lifespan just as long as the PS2's. Right now, it's far advanced in technology and is enhancing its online status... Hopefully XMB and Home to be released soon, the online will have to grow which will take more time. I only expect a new Xbox and Wii by 2012 to catch up to the then front-running PS3... then an UberPS console will release in 2016-2018 if at all.

With every new generation all the manage to do successfully is make the same thing, except make it way more boring than the last.

Moore's law (which has proved incredibly accurate in the 43 years since it was noted) states that the number of transistors which can be cheaply installed on an integrated circuit doubles every 18-24 months.

Now, if this guy's predictions about the PS4 are correct (that it will be released in 2012, putting it at 6 years after the PS3), then that is 72 months. This is equivalent to either 3 24 month periods, or 4 18 month periods, which means that the increase in power would be somewhere between either 2^3 (8) OR 2^4 (16).

So essentially, as well as being based on pointless conjecture, the article is wrong.

Consoles just flat out blow. If you have to upgrade every few years I rather spend the money on a good PC.
