Remembering Shadow Hearts

Game Informer - As I wrote in my Lost RPG Franchises article, the chances of seeing another Shadow Hearts installment are slim-to-none. But every time the series’ December anniversary rolls around (this year is the 11th anniversary), I reminisce about everything it offered role-playing game fans: intriguing, outside-the-box characters, a fun twist on history and its figures, humorous dialogue, and a timing-based battle system that shook things up.

Shadow Hearts 2 (Covenant) was one of the best, if not the best RPG I've ever played, Shadow Hearts 1 and 3 not far behind. I loved every aspect of the games from the unique, often weird characters to the historic references and twisted themes and locales as well as the exciting and fun combat system; the music in those games was also unforgettable and of a very high quality. Glad to see an article talking fondly about them at this time. This series needs to be brought back instead of making more sequels of the rigidly unimaginative, copy-paste fantasy RPGs of today.

I actually thought the first Shadow Hearts was the best because it was more dark and creepy than Covenant.
Covenant was still an awesome game.
Didn't like "a new world" though because it just dropped all of the creepyness for comedy really.

Anyone play Koudelka? that was a bad ass horror RPG and apparently part of the Shadow Hearts series.

I did but I think I told you that already XD. There's a reason why the game is 90+ dollars or more in almost every online auction.

HarryMasonHerpderp4867d ago

Haha yeah it's really hard to get now.
I would kill for it to be available on PSN and be able to play it on my Vita.

Infernostew4867d ago

I was lucky enough to score a copy of Koudelka in an online auction with a couple other games for $15. Haven't given it a shot yet and the disc is in pretty bad shape from what I remember.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant was one of the best RPGs ever made, hands down. It it so sad to see the franchise go wayside because it really was one of a kind.

nyobzoo4867d ago

yes, one of the best rpg series around imo

Luke_fon_Fabre4867d ago

I'll play these at some point.

CrescentFang4867d ago

I was so happy to find a pre-owned copy of Covenant at BestBuy... only to find half the disc cut in half :(
I still have yet to play SH2...

Super short list, but of course Dark Cloud 2 and Rogue Galaxy would make this list.

They did release both of those games on PS4 though. Two of the very few games I was happy to "buy" digitally, and with trophies.

Shadow Hearts Retro Review – Dark History

Gary Green said: Most JRPG fans look back to the PS1 era and smile. It was a time when narrative masterpieces were being released regularly, which was a good thing since most gamers were very hungry for more. It’s no wonder the late 90s is referred to as ‘the JRPG golden age’. Sadly, all things must come to an end, and the dawn of the PS2 would see ambitious developers try to set new trends with expensive visual upgrades, deviations in gameplay to include more focus on either action or strategy, or even online gameplay.

Not all hope was lost, and a handful of dedicated developers would attempt to revive the ‘traditional’ JRPG. While many attempts would be lost to time and obscurity, others would slowly rise to cult status as respectable masters of their craft. One such game would put its growing franchise on the map and captivate many a gamer with its unique theme of real-world characters and locations, and recurring use of Lovecraftian horror. It’s time to revisit Shadow Hearts.

I loved the trilogy. Dark and edgy, very good battle system, good characters. 3rd game has gone extra silly, but it was still very fun. I hope one day a remaster comes out

Redgrave560d ago

It's probably not impossible.... not sure where the rights sit currently after Midway went under but somebody somewhere owns the IP, and somebody somewhere else has to be asking how to get these games out again (please not Aspyr)

I would love a collection with Koudelka, Shadow Hearts, Covenant and From the New World... I never got to play Shadow Hearts, that game was stupidly rare before Covenant came out. From the New World isn't too expensive or difficulty to find for a reasonable price, but Shadow Hearts is impossible unless you want to fork over $200 for a copy.

I have a foggy memory of this one. Do remember that it was pretty fun back in the day. That thumbnail reminds me of the upcoming Wukong game. Excited for that one.

jznrpg1431d ago

I own the entire Shadow Hearts series on PS2 . Hopefully it’s a new game

RedDevils1430d ago
