The tech they showed was cool, from a gaming perspective. Nice simulation of different materials and substances.

Guys, remember that isn't Gears 2, that's Gears 1 in Multiplayer using the updated engine to do all those effects, you can tell that's Gridlock. The new stuff looks great though, the water is really good and finally some good destructible environments!

The water looked pretty horrible. Other than that, the rest of the features shown look pretty good. I'm still not a fan of the engine, though.

The soft body physics are very well done. That gooey square and the mercury looking thing acted so very realistic.

With so many new engines coming out Epic needs to improve the Unreal engine and it looks like they have done so. I don't think they can improve graphics any more and it looks to me like this demo wasn't about graphics but it was more physics and light. Nice job Epic. The future of gaming is looking very bright.

yeah the new Unreal Engine will be a great addition to next generation games indeed. Got to feel good to be a gamer owning both systems :D

This year is my most anticipated year for games on both system...next week it starts with Lost Oddysee (UK) and after that it be Crisis Core and so on so on...more game for pc/ps3/xbox360 the more better I love it

i have to say that the water effects looked better then uncharted. uncharted's water effects looked just as good until the part where he was shooting at the water which is when it outdid uncharted's

very nice though. to be honest, gears 2 reminds me of killzone 2 in third person.

The water looked really good too. I'd like to see what it would look like if you shot something in the water and it exploded with those effects.

If they really fit that many enemies on screen all at once INGAME i swear i will chainsaw my own head off!!!

And to think Unreal Engine 3 is being optimised to take advantage of PS3 tech.

everything is looking pretty good. However I think Star Wars the force Unleashed has better physics as far as destructible environments.

Needless to say it's a good thing Epic is updating they're unreal engine 3 especially for gears 2, seeing as how the way the engine is starting to look outdated.

Looks like the 360 is finally building up a good list of AAA games to compete with the PS3's list.

The hordes of onscreen enemies all looked rather tame... They all had the same animations and I noticed a handful who got hung up on objects.

All in all... this is a tech demo and, as we've all seen, Tech Demo's are a little more liberal when showcasing off grandiose effects. I've no doubt Gears of War 2 will be special.. but it still isn't selling me on the overall picture of buying faulty hardware to play it.

The part with the meat cube and mercury drop reminded me of Portal for some reason. The floor maybe? The Meat Companion Cube methnkz? This engine has most definitely earned my respect, and I take back everything I said about it. That is... if the texture loading is gone. If Gears 2 looks as good as this video, has all the features in this, and plays as good as it looks, I think it may just be enough reason to get a 360. Anyways, too bad UT3 couldn't have these updates. I'd love to see destructible environments! Maybe a mod could do that....

everything looked good, I dug the meat brick myself lol, but the liquid metal ball I felt was the most impressive. the water was ok, its not revolutionary people, I belive the physics guys working on Tekken 6 said they were going to push limits with water tech but even from the vids I say it just looks alright.

But still, I used to think th UT3 engine was dated, but its certainly a contender again with these nice additions.

I take it thats PC? I dont mean the additions, i know they'll be on the 360 but i just mean the actual tech demo.

if only other companies can use unreal engine like epic can. i think unreal engine has a lot of things going for it still.

I agree with nikcage24 (post 3.1) i was thinking the same thing. Some of the battles in Heavenly Sword have twice as many characters each doing their own fightstyle and reacting to the player at that. Not to take away from gears i love the game, but in terms of seeing something new (with that epic video) i think its been done before. Theres actually alot of impressive aspects of HS but the game didn't seem to get that well recieved.(no research involved just my take on things)

This renews my faith in UE3. I can't wait to get my hands on these upgrades. The water looks great, realtime reflection like in Uncharted would be nice, but they're still using env- and spec-maps. Also, he didn't mention it, but they've done HUGE work on their parallax occlusion mapping algorithm.

Glad to know the 360 is the preferred platform for Unreal Engine development as demonstrated in this demo :)

Now watch Epic stretch their muscle and blow everything out of the water when gears 2 is released - they did it before and they shall do it again :)

I think that gears might be on the way to become the "Halo" of this generation.

But the locust horde did not look promising. They were all running the same animation, and only had basic AI (if that) applied to them. Useful for ambient crowds, but not up close battle. Looks like devs using Unreal Engine 3 will get a nice boost in performance though.

I want to see direct feed footage of the ambient occlusion at work.

I think ps3 has some advantages for 3d photorealistic engine. as we can see in Uncharted and Killzone 2, oh maybe u wanna se GT 5 screenshot? it has the best lightning system even quad core with high end GPU cannot do the smae proccess.

So i suggest Epic to give more time developing in Cell and RSX,i think the result must be spectacular

Was an interesting watch, it was however spoiled by the whole kissing of Microsoft's backside at the end that irritated me.

UTIII Engine runs just as good on PS3 as it does on the Xbox 360, there was no reason to drop such a comment as it only leads to fanboyism.

Yeah nothing really impressed me that much in the vid. 100 enemies on screen at once is nice, but heavenly sword has already done 1000 enemies on screen at once :/

Water is nice. Bioshock and Uncharted have better water.

Even tho Gears, UT3, and Gears 2 are each spaced a year apart, all the games pretty much look the same (with minor improvemtents to the engine in each). They shoulda scrapped the name Gears of War and just called it Unreal Adventure to end the confustion. Either way I expect the PC version to snuff the 360 version again. This graphical achievement was awesome 2 years ago and maybe even last year, but in 08 there are a lotta games coming out that'll trump it.

I have to say, this is very impressive and I do hope all developers utilizing the engine take advantage of all the features showcased.

I dunno about you guys but i feel pretty damn good owning both the 360 and a ps3. 2008 is going to be fantastic for gaming.

We all love tech demos, the only demo that surprised me was the force unleashed video. I am sacrificing gears of war 2 in high hopes that one day it will be on a ps3. I used to be a former xbot and gears was great until I got red ringed and traded everything for a ps3. A few things about gears piised me of though and that was host advantage and non-stop glitching. It got so bad I would hear everyone saying things like" Once I finish this glitch I can get some kills" and " I cant get my glitch to work, Now im gonna get killed" pathetic! gears of war is unplayable online unless you play straight up with the same guys forever. So I hope people dont have multiple xboxes and decide to get a ps3 so microsoft wont have customer support and sony can get these games. Because of the games xbox has customer support but when things go wrong wheres the customer service? PS3 gamers demand more from sony! Buy ps 3 games and show some love! Most importantly buy a headset! MAGNUM-RAM HAS SPOKEN...

The unreal engine has always been impressive so long as you never threw too much at it - turns to crap.This new improved engine however looks far more like what i expected from next gen.

I think as a story both Halo and Gears have a more convincing setting.Sure Gears is a bit corny and maybe for bias reasons you refuse to see anything good in the Halo franchise, but like it or not they're both more believable if viewed as purely story alone.Resistance has a story that for the sake of it seems altogether forced and although Killzone is beautifully gritty, it's story is not something i can really imagine.

I'm mostly a Halo fan but i can far more imagine Gears happening in some real form.I like to believe that too of Halo as i adore it's universe but although it's real to me, it's just nonsense.Resistance is however just crap as a story regarding how believable it is and Killzone has me not caring much for it even though i did very much enjoy the rather rough PS2 version.

1 and 2 for sure 3 was ok Dom's death felt rushed to me. Judgement was meh 4 was ok and 5 I thought was boring.

4 & 5 had some bullshit practice’s for MP characters and skins.
Judgement was very casual.
2 had the best maps and good gameplay if it wasn’t laggy.
3 had okay maps (too open) but the gameplay was the best.
1 was solid all around.

Judgement has the weakest campaign and multiplayer. Gears 5 would probably be ranked lower if it’s multiplayer didn’t mature well. The game improved significantly in terms of progression and content from launch overtime. While, Gears of War 1 was the most influential title of the series it hasn’t aged as well as it successors.
Gears of War 2 is number one for me due to its plot, introduction of horde and personal nostalgia, despite 3 being objectively better, in my opinion.

I Haven’t not played the spin-off titles, as they belong to genres that don’t interest me.

As an aside: I waiting for my EARNABLE or FREE COG still Spartans to be added to Halo Infinite. Spartans Emile and Kait were in Gears 5 mp, so 343i should reciprocate the Coalitions cross-over.

1,2,3,5,4 and Judgement for me. The first game is hard to beat imo.

Based only on the campaign. 2 was almost perfect; 1 (as a start for the franchise) was amazing too. 3 had some issues, but mostly very enjoyable. Judgement tried to move some stuff around but mostly stayed with the same crew and very basic story. 5 and 4 (campaign-vise) were pretty bad, didn't feel like they were important for the Sera as a whole (maybe that's how it felt to me).

Gears of War 1 is one of the coolest games ever made. A really unique blend of shooter and horror. The art direction was stunning, the music was excellent, and the overall atmosphere was really special. It also looked incredible back in 2006.

This series need a god of war style reboot, the cover and shoot mechanic is old news now they gotta do something to mix it up again.

Other wise its lterally 7 games of the same thing with minimal additions to the gameplay

Now that I finally own an XB one day I'll try the Gear games on Gamepass.

The first 3 are the only good ones in my opinion with the original Xbox 360 Gears 1 was the best online. The rest where not good imo.

Gears 1 was the best hands down. Dark and gritty from beginning to end. Gears 2 was an incredible sequel that ranks close to the first imo. Don’t think they will ever recapture the magic of the first two games. The emphasis has shifted and propably won’t go back.

I have all 5 mainline games from sales on the Xbox store... I need to play them one of these days

Gears and Halo 3 made me pick up a 360 immediately after playing at a friend's house. Great times there. Gears was something new and different from everything else

Game series is ugly art wise, plays super clunky and is just lame. I hate gears.

I remember booting Gears 1 on day 1 back in 2006 and my girlfriend at the time said “how could games look any better from here.”

Not only was Gears 1 special for its visuals, but the gameplay felt so fresh and innovative. What a time.

360 era gears doesn't miss, amazing games. One era, ain't a big deal, really not missing much with it
