WiiU Hacked By fail0verflow

hacker and mod-chip developer Marcan42 of fail0verflow has shared a Wii U teaser video via 0xf0f on YouTube demonstrating The Homebrew Channel below.

Keep in mind that this is purely a demonstration at this stage. Depending on how things progress and what direction development takes, we may or may not release something like this in this form. Please don't ask for release dates. We'd rather spend time investigating the new system than putting together a release that may or may not end up being the Right Way to do things in the future.

Hopefully it won't extend to software piracy for the Wii U.

majiebeast4920d ago

Where there is homebrew there is piracy its just a matter of time before it happens sad as that is.

3GenGames4920d ago (Edited 4920d ago )

Unlesss Nintendo would have gave them easier access to Homebrewing programs on it. It's not their fault they have to crack it wide open to get what they want. PS3 was only hacked because they removed the tools they were using to program the PS3 without pirating. Sony removed them, and they did what they were forced. Crack the system wide open. Not any bodies fault but their own.

The guys who hacked the system also agree.

Is it the provoker or the provoked who is to blame? Exactly.

@3gengames

First off the Ps3 wasn't hacked. The keys were stolen and given out on the internet. To this day you can't hack a Ps3 that is over firmware 3.55. Having a key is not a hack.

HammadTheBeast4920d ago

@3gengames

Honestly, it wasn't ever about the OtherOS. If people wanted that, it's basically free on PC's and any PC can run it.

rainslacker4919d ago

@3Gen

If it was about homebrew...which I believe it is with actual homebrew people, how do you explain why people are trying to hack the Vita. They offer the tools required to run homebrew software on the system, yet just last month we got a report that someone has started to open up the system.

I believe the homebrewers in general actually do it for the reasons you state, unfortunately their methods lead to others with less desirable intentions to break open the system and allow piracy. Because of that, if they weren't just in it for themselves, they would be more responsible with how they present these things to the market. I'd like to think this guy saying "Is it the right way to release it to the market" means that they are looking at a way to prevent their methods from allowing someone to open the system up to piracy, but that isn't likely the case.

Also, wasn't it not too long ago that the courts saw a strong correlation between homebrew leading to piracy, thus jail breaking a PS3 is not legal? Your arguments are nothing new, and restating them doesn't change how these things happen.

Well, maybe it will lead to Nintendo taking the Nintendo Network more seriously, and patching Wii U to play Wii, Wii Ware and Virtual Console games directly from the Wii U interface instead of having to switch to Wii mode. It's a major pain for the user, so I hope this is a major pain for Nintendo so they will make the necessary changes to make playing older titles less cumbersome. Oh, and I still want trophies/achievements damn't, so if Nintendo refuses to implement a system, maybe home developers will.

blackbeld4919d ago

WiiU will sell millions again just like the Wii cause its been hacked.

profgerbik4919d ago (Edited 4919d ago )

Nope, the Vita has all the homebrew it wants but it has not be pirated yet because the only damn leak in the system was actually shared with Sony by the hackers that figured it out.

Almost all the people who have homebrewed the Vita all say it's impossible to pirate games on it anymore because of that leaking info, plus the way the Vita was made, they made sure to make it extremely hard in almost every aspect.

Maybe the Wii U could end up in the same position but it seems like Nintendo system have always been the easiest to pirate on or emulate..

Obviously.. I mean god damn this was fast they hacked the Wii U, I don't even think they did the Vita that fast to be dead serious. Just goes to show how easy it must be to hack Nintendo systems.

As much as I love piracy simply because I wouldn't even be who I am today if it didn't exist or at least know half of what I do, I do hate to see systems like this abused by it.

I also hope like the Vita, someone if they do figure out how to pirate games on the Wii U is willing to hand it over to Nintendo, thing is the Vita only had one hole to pirate games which Sony is now aware thanks to a rogue hacker who wasn't happy with it and has fixed it, I am not sure how many options are available with the Wii U, if there is more that isn't good.

Best of luck Nintendo, even though I don't really care for you all anymore or your devices, I still hate to see anyone have their business compromised like this.

I guess it's not official yet though so no need to worry right now but honestly at this rate, it really isn't looking good, if it has been this easy for them so far.

mushroomwig4920d ago

You know it will, since when did homebrew not lead to software piracy?

3GenGames4920d ago (Edited 4920d ago )

When the PS3 was running Ubuntu an they were programming games for it that way. Once they started to access more of the GPU, Sony shut them out because they didn't want that. So they hacked it and did it anyway and everyone lost.

ElectricKaibutsu4919d ago

Sony and Nintendo are games companies. They lose money on consoles. If Linux developers want to make games they can use the Ouya.

Crazay4920d ago

Ya clearly it won't ever extend to piracy.

***facepalm***

SilentNegotiator4919d ago

Oh look, overflow hacked something without stolen keys! Good for them!

fffffffrrrrt.

showtimefolks4919d ago

This could be bad news or good depending on which side are you with. If this wads to piracy than bad but hopefully Nintendo has leaned something from ms and Sony and can mve fast on some the issues and patch the system on time

LOL_WUT4920d ago

Already? Damn that was quick! I wonder what Nintendo has to say about this.

TXIDarkAvenger4920d ago

Well it was bound to happen but this was earlier than I expected.

Venoxn4g4920d ago

thats for Wii mode only I think so, but still :)

Qrphe4920d ago (Edited 4920d ago )

Nope, the homebrew channel is ran from the Wii U menu.

----------------

Nintendo only really would lose money with the hacked Basic models since they don't come with a game for them to profit from.

If you hack a Wii U for free games the real loser would be you (why not buy a cheaper Wii and hack it instead), else enjoy backing up your Wii games, imported games, and DVDs on the Wii U.

ZeroX98764919d ago (Edited 4919d ago )

nope, it IS run on wii menu

http://gbatemp.net/threads/...

Doesn't have access to wii U nand yet. BUT it could be a door to another exploit. but seriously, it could have an impact on third party support if the console gets hacked right away.

How long has this thing been out again?

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg29d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree29d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai29d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

Best 2D, Mario World, best 3D, Mario 64. Can't say there's been a bad one, although Mario World 2 wasn't a true sequel. The Mario Land games were good (not the first one) and also Wario Land. I thought after Mario 64, Mario 3D World was excellent.
