True, this defeat is bigger than betamax, simply because at least sony made money from betamax as it was the standard in industry until around 2001.

blu ray does affect 360 due to the surge in consumers who will buy a ps3 due to the fact it being the most future proof bluray player plus the bonus of being able to play games

and for gamers its a blessing because we get to watch the winning format as a bonus if we feel.

but the biggest news i believe is that games come on bluyray for ps3 this will be the next big news with developers stating dvd9 is a pain, i 100% guarantee it! you have all seen how fickle this game is all i read now is news bashing 360 and praising ps3

i say that because MS made a hddvd add on for a reason and one of those reasons was to get people who wanted to watch hd movies to purchase a 360 or people who already had one to get the add on so they too could experience hd movies without having to buy a stand alone hddvd player or better still a bluray player or ps3. Nothing you do in life carries zero risk or consequence especially in business. What happens to the surplus add ons now, they did cost something along with the r+d amongst other things. Of course MS aren't the main casualty of the format war but to say they are unaffected is a touch naive

You are underestimating the new kind of consumer thats wants everything in one box, so this might steer more consumers to buy a PS3

Not to mention the fact that PS3 sales units will rise due to it being the best overall blu-player, and even though it was bought as a blu-ray player and not a game machine it will still count as a sale for sony which will boost its units sold, and we all know the progress report for any company selling products is the units sold

So when consumers see the units sold later on in the year, and if this does help the PS3 boost it's units sold, then the consumer will see it as a popular machine and if a casual consumer is looking for a game machine these variables might help it get bought

First, I doubt Sony would ever say no to MS since MS would just sue for rights.
Second, did Nintendo fans abandon the NES when ROB didn't work or had no games or when the powerpad and got lost in the shuffle? No, they just bought the next new thing from Nintendo...the SNES. You may have a few defectors but don't expect many. Fans tend to stay loyal. A true gamer however will own a PS3, Wii, XBOX360, PSP, and DSLite.
