Life of a PC gamers having tight budget is very difficult.

jony_dols4927d ago

Pretty annoying considering I can't update the graphics card on little M11x netbook. Even though it runs Hitman Absolution at a steady 40fps with settings on high...

ProjectVulcan4927d ago (Edited 4927d ago )

By 2013 Windows 7 and by extension DX11 cards will be over 4 years old.

Realistically you can keep hardware that long but by then you would wanna think about improvements.

However when DX10 arrived we werre warned everything will go DX10 and DX9 would be finished and it wasn't.

tachy0n4927d ago

Nvidia and AMD appear not to be that interested on Direct X 11.1

Nvidia already said they will only support it partially and a possible patch for current Direct X 11 cards might come!

im on a 2008 system with a Q6600 @3GHz, GTX460 and 8GB of RAM.....

the only thing i upgraded recently was the GTX460 which is pretty cheap now, if you are smart enough you can do PC gaming without spending too much.

ProjectVulcan4927d ago (Edited 4927d ago )

The extended console generation has ensured PC hardware has stayed relevant for more and more time.

I don't think owning a capable gaming PC has ever been cheaper or easier.

It has not escaped me that my i7 920 is now FOUR years old also, but much of the time still kicks serious ass.

http://www.techspot.com/rev... I recently noticed this brand new game's CPU benchmark and like a few others I have noticed, i7 920 is still right up there still trouncing the latest AMD gear. Black ops 2 the situation is the same. In Medal of Honor the difference between it and the fastest is only 10 percent.

Needless to say I allowed myself to be a little smug.

I bought an Xbox on launch back in March 2002 (UK) and that machine was replaced by Xbox 360 in the same territory at less than 4 years old, with microsoft dropping support of the system like a hot potato.

So to have owned a viable PC platform for longer than that now is an easy way to quiet down anyone that says you must upgrade a PC constantly....

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4927d ago (Edited 4927d ago )

It's a shame we have to depend on Microsoft a company who cares little about pc gamers and yet they are the one we need.

also I think wiiU has a dx10 card? smh..

chukamachine4927d ago

dx this and dx that./

Trouble is dx10 came and did nothing.

DX11 is here and not enough games take advantage of it.

Highend cards are expensive for many people.

I'm on this system.

i5 2500k @4.5ghz
6870 1gb
8gb Kingston
2tb hd

Were I to upgrade, it would be just gpu.

But I never go sli, waste of time unless running at ultra rez etc.

1920x1080 @ 60fps does me.

Why is this article using the Socom: Confrontation box art?

This is a stupid article based on nothing..

Fishy Fingers4927d ago (Edited 4927d ago )

Well that's not strictly true. Select high profile titles might only support Dx11 but the majority of games will continue to support Dx9/10.

And while I hate to cast aspersions, if your looking to play those big name games your quite likely to be the kind of guy who keeps their hardware up to date.

Once the next gen Sony and MS consoles hit the scene a lot of games will only use D3D11 (and OpenGL 4).

To make full use of D3D11 properly, the game needs to be made with it's features taken into account from day 1 - and the D3D9 version would look crap compared to a game made for D3D9 (they could also make it fine, but it'd take a lot more man-hours in development from artists and programmers, when using something like Unreal - it's only artists' time that would be taken up). It won't even be worth making games look good in D3D9 because most of the target market can run D3D11 (and OpenGL 4, which I keep mentioning because OpenGL is growing as D3D/DX is just Microsoft vendor locking, smartphones and PS3 have increased the popularity of OpenGL with graphics programmers). Oh, and it's D3D when talking about rendering, DX is other things too which developers don't (or shouldn't) use anymore.

Anyway, when a game is made solely for D3D11/OpenGL 4, a lot of performance can be saved from surface lighting calculations because they don't have to be faked as much - they are actually resultant of the tessellated polygons, this can also decrease video memory bandwidth usage because there are less detail map textures required for rendering, leaving some extra performance for other effects - balancing all this correctly is way easier if the game only supports tessellated rendering. Though, as it stands now - a game would have to be made only for the very top end graphics cards to rely on tessellation that heavily, it will change when Sony and MS get something new to market because they should be able to approach that level of performance for less cost (still talking $500-$600 retail in year 1).

Granted "some" PC players have "legit" reasons why PC is better than console, this is one big reason why I still game on a console over PC; Buy the system, buy the games, that's it. Upgrading hardware can get expensive (as well as keeping up with Windows and whatever they feel like doing), and when I was on college I learned one thing: "Whatever you buy, it's already outdated."

I really hope Linux gets Steam going to at least provide an alternate way to game without having to spend $ on Windows just to play a few games.

Ducky4927d ago

DirectX9 started around 2002.
WinXp was released in 2001.

Both have now lost support in the past two years. That's not a bad stretch.

... are you still using WinXP?

JasonKCK4927d ago

You still use XP? The amount of spyware, virus, and adware you have to remove must be incredible. Trying to find stable apps must be hard.

bozebo4927d ago (Edited 4927d ago )

I have Steam on my Linux boot. The beta came out not long ago, it even sports bigger picture - so essentially it's an open source console (this is probably where the steambox rumor started, though I could still see them releasing a machine with their own sleek Linux distribution designed for use on a TV - this would destroy the console market because it would be so much cheaper overall, the only competitive move for MS/Sony would be amazing multiplats... which can only just compete with Valve to be honest)

Anyway, the costs of upgrading my PC were still cheaper than the added price differences for all the PC multiplats I didn't buy on console. And of course no XBL, compared to 360. (I've actually still spent more gaming on my 360 in total than on my PC since 2006 even without buying multiplats on consoles). And I've only needed to replace my mouse once whereas I've been through 5 controllers that died on me (and one had fuzzy headset voice for some reason, the shop refused to replace it because apparently it was fit for purpose)

Hell, I'd need a PC to work on anyway so the price difference between that and one that will run any game is cheaper than a console, especially in earlier years (can pick up a console cheap now).

"Direct X 9/10 Will Be A History In 2013"
not for Call of Duty. lol

Axonometri4927d ago

Yea. Agreed. I hear CODBO3 will support 3DFX.

SkullBlade1694927d ago

Nah, it still uses software rendering. Maybe next time...

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio26d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing26d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit26d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing26d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
