Do Developers Already Hate The Wii U?

One of the things that makes the Wii U different from its predecessor is Nintendo's newfound love of third-party publishers. Sure, third parties haven’t exactly been absent from Nintendo's systems, but the success of the console has never relied on outside development. They've always focused their efforts most heavily on in-house titles like Mario, Metroid, and Zelda. However, with the Wii U specs slightly outpacing the current generation of consoles, Nintendo is obviously trying to woo outside developers. And it's working.

Embeepee4937d ago

Lol, it's too early to tell! The fact that the Wii U has the Pro Controller will make it easier for devs though I guess

Anyway, the Wii U's 3rd party support will be good for at least the next 3 years because it'll have a headstart in sales against the PS4/X720. More sales = more attention from devs

kneon4937d ago

But it's miles behind the 360/PS3 install base and will be for years. Whether the Wii U will continue to get third party support will depend on how the games are selling.

So if you want continued third party support go buy the games.

... but at this point, I'm not going to invest in a gimmick-based console that will be outdated specs-wise a year from now.

The 3rd party 'core' stuff is mostly just ports from current-gen consoles (and not even great ports when I read the reviews), and we'll have to wait and see about the quality of the 1st party stuff, but which is usually good.

There are a few games that look interesting, like the new Rayman, but I haven't really seen anything 'must-have'.

" The 3rd party 'core' stuff is mostly just ports from current-gen consoles (and not even great ports when I read the reviews), and we'll have to wait and see about the quality of the 1st party stuff, but which is usually good. "

What console launch came with entirely new exclusives?

What gives you the idea if they " truly went next gen" we wouldn't see ports?

The problem is that production pipelines are for the most part stuck with the Ps3/360 standard(6 years of opitmizations ). Wii U isn't even utilized like the Ps3 is over the years.

I really don't see the relation between a " truly next gen" system and third party ports.

Consoles like Ps3/360 were outdated 6 months after their release. Not sure why you are worried about that. There are plenty of good games on them to this day.

I'm all up for advancements. But I think people are looking for excuses that do not affect their gaming experience.
You said it yourself. If 1st party stuff are usually good...why would third party content fail to do the same? How are " outdated specs " going to affect this? How is it only affecting third party developers and not Nintendo?

A good game is a good game. Regardless of specs.

Yi-Long4937d ago

"I really don't see the relation between a " truly next gen" system and third party ports."

You see 3rd party right now doing lazy ports of their PS3/360 games for the WiiU.

They can't be bothered it seems.

About a year from now we expect the new Xbox and Playstation to come out, and they will be much more powerful, is the general assumption.

What happens then is that the major 3rd party developers will focus on those new systems with their 'core' games, and once again the WiiU will be left out, cause by that time the WiiU will be far less powerful, thus again not really worth the bother of doing a proper port.

But that makes the Wii U 6 years outdated. I guess we'll how far optimizations will go over the years, but I'm not extraordinarily optimistic that it'll get much better than what we're seeing now...perhaps with some of the first party games. I don't think 3rd parties will latch onto it though.

At least that means we won't be getting Family Carnival Games #67425

New games need new resources ( teams/management/etc). Money doesn't grow on trees. Making games, especially establishing new franchises costs a lot of money.

How is this Nintendos fault?

"What happens then is that the major 3rd party developers will focus on those new systems with their 'core' games"

How do you know? In fact developers have no reason to invest in even bigger projects. No doubt they wan't to go forward. But game development these days are already costly. And this is what Sony and MS are most likely taking into consideration.

" thus again not really worth the bother of doing a proper port."

I really don't see how you think it's the Wii situation all over again. It easily runs current games at higher settings. And these are just launch title ports. It is only logical to assume that any dedicated game( or optimized dev-pipeline ) will outbest them by far.
You are assuming that the PS4/Nbox will do some space magic. We don't even know how strong they will be. In what way will the gameplay be so drastically demanding that they can't port it to the Wii U?

I'm not even betting on bigger companies opening the creative gate. Indie developers is where it is at.

@vuzer
" But that makes the Wii U 6 years outdated"
I don't think you even understand yourself. This is not how logic works.

Wii U is actually build from recent components. But technology cycles are short/fast. We keep growing faster into new technology.

That is why I said consoles are outdated after 6 months. How did you conclude it's 6 year old hardware? From what did you deduce any of that?

attilayavuzer4936d ago

@sidar

Well by what you said the 360/ps3 were outdated in 6 months (~5 1/2 years outdated), the Wii U is less powerful than current consoles, so just by basic comparison the Wii U is over 5 1/2 years outdated (by your account. I still haven't played it so I can't give a personal judgment). Doesn't matter if it's built from recent components (which it's not...seems parts were recycled from the Wii) if it's not a step forward technologically

Yeah.. And how that go for the wii? Top selling console but games outside of Mario, fitness and dancing sold poorly, thus the lack of third party support.

Monstar4937d ago

LOL, n4g desperate for attention again.

Embeepee4937d ago

I don't think you understand how N4G works... Lulz

Monstar4937d ago

what, you mean posting up the most pointless traffic hit articles?

I don't think you understand how N4g REALLY works. LMFAO-yeh srsly you don't.

Dovahkiin4937d ago

@Monstar

User submitted content, that is all.

_DragonSlayer_4937d ago

Already with the Question articles..Whats next, Do Wii U games play on the Wii U? I really wish N4G would ban question articles...

millzy1024937d ago

no just EA because there cry babies and fell out with Nintendo over there rubish origing intergration. I don't play ea games anyway since all need for speeds are the same, hate all sports games in general, if I want to play football (which I don't) ill go outside and play and never got into mass effect oh and maybe Bethesda as I hadn't heard anything from them but they probably waiy and see. plus there's nothing they can add to Wii u at the moments, too late for skyrim which I'm still waiting for dlc on ps3 maybe fallout 4 could come but have to wait and see.

Heavenly King4937d ago

I am not a developer, but based on some early tech stuff, I dont like it.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure80d ago (Edited 80d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer81d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot81d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box80d ago (Edited 80d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno81d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay81d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno79d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK79d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
