It didn't really "survive" as it did what most of us knew what Sony and the PS3 were going to do eventually. History has shown what was going to happen 3 times already, lots of prelaunch hype, a slow six-7 month period where people slag the machine and Sony and say they f'd up by adding too much crap boosting the price, making it a media player first and games machine second. Followed by a year or two later when the true value is realized, a hell of a lot of games are coming, and everyone pretends none of that ever happened before.

It's all going to happen again when the PS4 launches.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the PS2 in the same state as the PS3, where developers complained about development difficulties and console delays? And look what happened 7 years later, the little fellow is still going strong.
In the beginning of it life-cycle, the PS3 got cornered by both the 360 and the Wii, but it never got to a point where the system got K.O and we expected the same thing to occur in 07, but what happened? The system was still standing on it's feet.

Sony had a crap first few months with the Ps3 and even you can't deny that.They got loads of bad press. If it wasn't selling well in Japan how could anyone expect it to sell well anywhere else?

At least now its picking up steam and will have a great 2008...God you fanboys are unbelievable sometimes. You may hate the competition for no other reason than you not having the console, but you don't know how bad it would be if a console was to leave the war. If Microsoft discontinued the 360 and all that was left was the Ps3 do you know how bad that would be for us? Sony would have a monopoly.Monopolies = No innovation+High Prices.

Look at HD DVD and Blu-Ray for example. Sure HD DVD failed but without Toshiba dropping the prices like they did, Blu-Ray manufacturers would never of dropped prices on Blu-Ray players.

Now if you want to know what it would've been like in terms of consoles, without 360 then PSN would most likely not be free and wouldn't be on dedicated servers because Sony would have no reason to spend money like that when consumers would have no other choice than the Ps3. The Ps3 would still be $600 and wouldn't get a price drop for a long time.

Considering the Hostile market it launched into i think its kept its head above water, although initially was gasping to start with. Kudos to Microsoft and Nintendo though for keeping the market so competitive as this really does push the Company`s to strive to do better.

This year is a big year for Sony, and they should make up the ground with the 360, although i doubt surpass it. Nintendo however is a different kettle of fish but i think by the end of this year Wii Sales will drop by a large amount leaving Microsoft and Sony to Mop up the market for the foreseeable future. Regardless of who comes out top, us gamers whether it be Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo owners reap the benefits. Its a good time for Video Games as a whole, and the future looks good for everyone.

This is about reporters who bashed the PS3, and now seeing that it did not work... PS3 outsold the XB360. Now they are just trying to make it sound as if they are supporting the PS3...

People don't realize how big Home is going to be with game developers and ohter companies making their own spaces. I bloged about it if anyone is interested. So I think it survived because of Home and the gaming comanpies being interested in Home.

The games are freaking great. Too bad its just a piece of crap machine. I went through 3 already, so Im done giving a crap about the xbox now. I think its messed up how the 360 limits itself and offers us very little for how much we have to pay for the piece of crap. The premium is worth about as much as the wii is selling for right now.

I must say , however, that we wouldnt be getting alot of the benefits from sony like in-game xmb and soundtracks and stuff like that if it werent for xbox live. Im not saying sony wouldnt give out quality products, but the ps3 wasnt made for the gamer. It was thought to be a media center that was more about making life for us techies more convenient. Sony didnt know much about online as much as microsoft did either and actually lost millions of dollars cause they needed some way to compete against xbox live. Xbox makes 10 million a year just on the live service. Bottem live, the 360 helped the ps3 become what it is, The best video game system of all time!

the PS3 survived ONLY because of BRAND RECONITION, if this was any system OTHER than a PLAYSTATION the system would have failed!! only a PLAYSTATION can get away with those high prices an mediocre games an lesser quality than the competition at launch an still make it out alive. if the rolls were reversed an it was the 360 that launched a year later at a 600 dollar price with those games compared to the other system we wouldnt even been having this conversation, the 360 would have been completely dead. It's like the stock market, the 360 is like the stock that you buy and hope for instant results. The PS3 is for people that knew that the initial result wouldn't be fantastic at the start but it would pay off way more at the end. This is the part where owning a PS3 pays off.

Im sorry but EVERY console starts off with "lack" of games, but the difference is blu-ray helped leverage the want for the playstation.

I use my ps3 primary for blu-ray movies because it is the best thing out there for hd media.... but there is no denying, unless you hate sony but there are games out there.

Im currently at 70 BD's and 15 ps3 games..... Not too shabby for a console that is ~1.5 years old.

Bare in mind ps3 is more expensive than the competition and it is fighting against everything including their ps2.

I would say it is more like coping with market conditions, but we are starting to see signs that the ps brand can very well overcome the competition in the coming years.

The cost of purchasing a PS3 really wreaked havoc on Sony.

In some countries they are still struggling to save and buy this console.

And then there used to be a big issue on the number of titles available, especially real quality triple "A" games to compete with XBox and Nintendo.

At least nowadays some are showing up on gameshops' and other retail market shelves.

Also a lot of fans were put-off by not having "rumble" on the sixaxis, which only now is being implemented but can only be purchased in Japan and on the 'net.

Lastly on Blu-Ray, everyone got very disappointed and displeased with Sony for deliberately putting movies first before games when they were pushing the PS3 console on consumers'.

So really a lot of hurdles that Sony and their own people ( mostly in marketing and management ), who did this awful mess unto themselves.
And are now paying for it, hopefully.

But then it's Sony - it would be really hard to put this mighty conglomerate down for sure.

Although he could have been a little bit more in-depth about somethings, it was for the most part pretty good. I'm just happy to finally see what I've been saying about the PS3 taking effect now. The sad thing this shows about the market is how easily people are willing to succumb themselves to inferior products than to embrace technology that is taking things to the next level and expanding the norm. If a system like the PS3 that can be used as a key part of a home theater/media system was bashed for having too many features (features that it also does well) than it would be a very big disappointment and make many developers wonder wants the point of thinking outside the box.

Easy question. Its a good cheap blu-ray player, the brand name, also 2 price cuts in the first year macking it more appealing to peopel.

Brand boyally and that Sony has the largest amount of 1st party development studios in the industry.

The only thing that we really need to worry about is if these studios are making great games.

the trend of the majority is to seek instant gratification. I hate waiting for something i want, sometimes i hate waiting so much that i settle. I know a lot of friends who yearned for the next gen experience and made the easy decision. Even I wanted to purchase a 360, all my friends had it and loved it. kudos to all the PS3 owners that went against the grain. get ready for mass bandwagon hopping in the next 6-12 months, this juggernaut is building some steam!

but did anyone honestly think the PS3 would fail? I think anyone with a brain knew the thing would sell. It wanst doing as good as many expected but it is still gonna sell, if anything just for games like MGs and gran turismo. Ill probaly be getting one when they are chaper(bluray too, I got a new HD tv yay!!) and have MGS. Now the wii, I honestly didnt see that coming.

Around my time when I was a PS3-hater, I never did my research, but when I finally did, I noticed that PS2 was in the exact same state the PS3 is. Developers were crying like a bunch of school girls about the difficulties they had to face with the hardware, people were questions Sony's decision to include DVD and etc, but look what happened to the little fella 7 years later, it fricking killed anything out there. The PS3 on the other hand launched around the sametime as Wii and a year after the 360 and this is what caused all the bad publicity and etc, but imagine if the roles were switch where the PS3 launched first and the rest later... Now that would have been very interesting and closes mirror PS2 year.

360 was held back because of hardware problems.
360 survived because it had a year headstart.

ps3 was held back because of the price.
ps3 survived because of pure brand power.

both machines have a lot more going for them as well as other problems [ie: ps3 lack of games], but these are the core things IMO that really affected purchases.

Sony's confidence is what helped the Playstation 3 reach success. They outsold 360 in 2007 worldwide. Consumers trust confidence. Microsoft had their fingers in too many jars, and lacked confidence on their sku choices/features. This is why the Playstation 3 will succeed and ultimately will win this generation.

It has sold at the same rate as the 360, and more than the PS2's first year even WITH competition, a high price, and no games.

in all honesty i backed the PS3 this gen because of all the hate and trash 95% of the world was dumping on them. technically, they're not the underdog but the world made it seem so. i can't understand how gaming media can trash a company that had brought decades of amazing gaming to them and will continue so.

the PS3 has improved greatly in the games department and has the most stellar lineup for 2008. Compare Sony's entire first year lineup compared to the 360's. You made a statement about the 360 being better in the graphics department. The developers of Uncharted would really like to have a word with you. Because of a few cheap/ lazy ports you want to go and label the 360 as the superior graphic titan? As far as online, the 360 has the edge. But how long has Xbox Live been around. Since the Xbox 1. How long has Sony or Nintendo had a service on their system similar to Live, just this year. And MS is charging fees so it's obviously going to be a lot easier for them to easily add things to the feature to make it better knowing that they are getting money back in return. With a free service you really are only doing improvements with no real benefit unless people constantly buy things from your online catalog. And as much as people love to talk about Live, PC's have had superior ways of doing the same services and for free so it really isn't that impressive or revolutionary as people make it out to be.

Anyway my statement about the inferior product, is that people were willing to buy a console that will easily deteriorate with age in comparison to the PS3, has very little features in the system out of the box like the PS3 does, and they are only charging a $100-$200 less, and a product that seems to follow MS quality of products and be unreliable with people holding their breathe every time they turn it on hoping it doesn't break. For everything you get in the PS3 and the ability to use it as the main hub for an entertainment system and run surround sound and other devices through it for just $600($500 now) is a bargain. The comparison is like buying a Hyundai because it's cheap and seems to be close in stats like Horsepower to it's competition but the good is of very poor quality and probably won't last long. Instead you can buy a Lexus(Toyota) or Infiniti(Nissan) that is a lot more reliable and has better stats.

Sony has had the brand name for decades, good products and experience in the gaming field. It's going to take A LOT more than M$ and Nintendorks to bring this bad boy down.

yes, it was hard on us fans, but i'll get to that in a minute. the Playstation has been the top dog for 11 years. as a result, Sony corporate started to show that c*cky arrogance that Nintendo was known for back when *THEY were the c*ck of the walk for 10 years back in the 80s and early 90s.

Sony had reached a point where they felt that they could get away with *ANYTHING, and Playstation fans would eat it up.

the $500/$600 price of the PS3 was *NOT a part of that mentality, however. the PS3, back in 2006 *HAD to be that costly considering the cutting edge tech that was going into it. considering that Sony didn't make *ANY money on the PS3 for it's first year, i think it's safe to say that that $500/$600 price wasn't due to greed, but them legitly trying to cut down that *HUGE loss they were taking on each PS3 produced.

comments like "they'll buy a PS3 even if it had no games" are what i'm talking about.

comments like "the next generation doesn't start till we say so (and looking at how MS have backpeddled on everything they ridiculed Sony for, the quote isn't so absurd; MS included HDMI, a larger HDD, and 1080p games *AFTER they said they weren't needed, but Sony included it since the beginning)" are what i'm talking about.

the Playstation 3 launch was only a "disaster" to the media. diehard Playstation fans who waited overnight, even *DAYS to get their hands on their PS3 and bring it home were quite pleased (ie, my roommate). yes, all the launch titles except for Resistance sucked, but if you were a Playstation fan, you'd be used to the fact that Playstation consoles *ALWAYS have crappy launch titles. the PS1, PS2, and PSP all had mediocre crud for launch titles, that did nothing to show what the console was capable of.

Playstation fans *ALWAYS buy Playstation consoles for their potential, and if the games libraries of the PS1, PS2, and PSP show, is that we *ALWAYS get there in the end. we get a quality unit, and quality software, that Sony, and their first, second, and third party developers support *LONG after the new console has come to replace it.

people forget that the Playstation 3 has only been out *ONE year. during that one year, which is generally the hardest on *ANY gaming console, we have been treated to a *LARGE number of quality titles from the PS3: Resistance, Motorstorm, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Virtua Fighter 5, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Folklore, Ratchet and Clank Future, Unreal Tournament 3, and Ratchet and Clank Future. all excellent games. all in nice, diverse genres, from rpg, to platformer, to action/adventure, to FPS.

i like my 360, but every worthy game released so far have been primarily shooters (ie, Gears of War, Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Halo 3). sure, that's great for the shooter fans, but what about *EVERYBODY ELSE? what about the people who are fans of, you know, *OTHER genres? there's slim pickings. but i guess that doesn't matter, as long as the "hardcore" shooter fans are pleased, amiright?

anyway, Playstation 3 has been taking a beating, sure, but not nearly as hardcore as the beating that Playstation 3 *FANS have taken since E3 2006, when Sony announced the $500/$600 price for the PS3. and i don't mean a few harsh words on message boards, but we had the gaming *MEDIA, in no uncertain terms, calling us "*IDIOTS," "Foolish," "Stupid," and "Drones/Slaves" to Sony for sticking by the Playstation 3, when the X Box 360 offered that "quick fix" of good games *NOW.

now is all well and good, but once again, Playstation fans are Playstation fans because of the *LONG TERM games. we are a lot like the company itself: take a few short-term losses for *LONG TERM gains.

sure, year one wasn't blitzed with the franchises we know and love, but we certainly weren't starving for entertainment.

and then just *LOOK at the 2008 lineup for the PS3: DMC4 hit, Burnout Paradise, GTAIV, MGS4, FFXIII, Gran Turismo, Infamous, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, LA Noire, Home, Little Big Planet, White Knight Story, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2, and those are just a handful off the top of my head.

*THEN, moving into 2009, we get Ratchet and Clank Future 2, another SOCOM from the original developers, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Twisted Metal PS3, another Uncharted game, probably a Jak and Daxter game, Sly Cooper PS3, Resident Evil 5, and the conclusion to one of the biggest first party Sony franchises around in God of War 3.

yes, Microsoft had a wonderful 2007, starting with the release of Gears of War in November 2006, but what about the *LONG TERM?

*WHAT is Microsoft doing to *KEEP it's current fanbase happy, exciting, and frothing at the mouth for the *FUTURE? what is Microsoft doing to keep those 360 fans from constantly glancing across the street at the ecstatic PS3 fans who have more than just Halo Wars, Alan Wake, Gears of War 2, and Ninja Gaiden 2 to gibber about?

but back to the point i was originally trying to make, this complete *TRASHING of the Playstation brand over the past 2 hears was, for Sony, a *GOOD thing. it made them *HUMBLE, something they had lost when the PS1 and PS2 became the phenomenal successes that they are. the fans suffered, but in the end, Sony has become a better, more human corporation for it.

don't get me wrong, they *STILL want our money, and they will do what can to get it, but they've learned that treating your fanbase with respect and consideration is what gets loyalty.

yes, we paid a high price, and no, Sony is not perfect, but they've done everything they could in the past year to regain face with us.

they gave us free, lag-less online.

they returned rumble.

they lowered the price *TWICE in 12 months, not because of a "fire-sale" but because they knew that the price was a *HUGE barrier for a lot of their fanbase. the lowering of production costs internally also made those price drops possible, now they are breaking even on the console, soon to make a profit, so everybody whens in the *LONG RUN.

we lost Playstation 2 backwards compatibility (PS1 bc works on *ALL models), but it'll be *BACK (no pun intended), via software emulation, and probably due to Sony releasing PS2 games via the PSN. as a result, they'll re-institute bc.

Playstation 3 fans have had it harder than *ANYBODY these past two years, but now the tables have turned. the media are attempting to backpedal, and pretend that the past two years b*tchfest never happened, but us PS3 fans don't forget.

when we're playing MGS4, FFXIII, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, Infamous, Home, White Knight Story, LA Noire, Heavy Rain, and Resistance 2 in a few short months, while the sole 360 and Wii owners look on from the sidelines, we won't forget what they put us through the past two years.

the gaming media, hypocrites they may be, aren't as bad as the fanboys roaming sites like this. you know why? because they *HAVE all three consoles. they get to enjoy *ALL the games released on every platform. they write these stories not because they truly believe in it, but because it gets hits on their sites, or subscriptions to their magazines. at the end of the day, they go home and play their PS3/360/Wii, and laugh their @sses off at the retarded fanboys that take what they say to heart, and stick with only one console, missing out on the *GREAT games that all three have to offer.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
