They use that particle & lens flare effect that you see in the Frostbite 2.0 engine a lot. I notice the same effect when playing Battlefield 3. While it won't set the visual world on fire, it still looks very atmospheric. People have to remember that the visuals look muddy and dark because of the setting of the game. You wouldn't expect to see bright and shiny colors in a post-apocalyptic world. The lighting looks very well done.

Same. I thought it was a randomly generated single player experience.

Wait... actually if you look at the pictures it looks more like how Mr. Tingle was used when playing Wind Waker. It's not actually multiplayer. It looks like a top down view of the map and the person holding the handheld is giving items or whatever.
