Because people still think graphics mean everything

WWC: "Think of every game that is slated to be released in the near future; they are all related. How, you might ask? Elementary, my dear readers; graphics. Each game looks better than the next, and that’s amazing. It wasn't long ago that imagination played a big part in experiencing games, but now we are being hand fed senses like crazy. Epic musical scores and photo realistic graphics, to name the big ones. I think these graphics are awesome, but I don’t believe they’re our saviors from mediocre games."

Only people who gives a darn about graphically heavy games are the PC crowed, but hey, if I'm spending half a grand on my gaming console in the year 2012 and beyond you bet your butt I better be getting graphics with my gameplay..

decrypt4935d ago (Edited 4935d ago )

Console gamers.. Don't care about graphics.

Its why they play on 6 year old tech.

@below

If I owned a 6 year old cell phone then claimed i care about the latest cellphone tech, what would you tell me?

Now imagine if devs were pushing software for the same phone claiming its very powerful and needs more optimization.. consoles more or less are in that situation. Anyone playing on them cant really be serious about performance or graphics.

tubers4935d ago

Nonsense. Not all of them do but some don't.

Then why do some bicker about the top gorgeous console titles with differing points of reference?

UC, KZ, GoW, TLoU, Halo, etc.

If console gamers did not care about graphics then why do developers push so hard with it?

MaxXAttaxX4935d ago (Edited 4935d ago )

Oh look the difference is SO HUGE....
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
...It's truly an entire generation apart! /end sarcasm.

Most multiplatform games are designed around and with consoles in mind.

To me, there are many more visually appealing games on consoles than there are on PC, most which don't solely rely on high end tech to achieve great visuals with art direction and design.

reynod4935d ago (Edited 4935d ago )

@NathanExplosion

Lol, why not link a game like BF3, Witcher 2 or Metro 2033 maybe?

Maybe show BF3 running in eyefinity and still managing over 60fps. The difference clearly is beyond a generation, as i dont think even the next consoles will be able to manage BF3 @ 5760 * 1080p over 60fps.

ShinMaster4935d ago (Edited 4935d ago )

That honestly sounds a little desperate of you.
And PC gamers who care that much about graphics are in the minority ;)

@decrypt
Millions of PC gamers don't care either, with games like WoW, Star Craft, League of Legends, among other games.

MaxXAttaxX4935d ago (Edited 4935d ago )

^^ agreed.

@reynod

There are obviously going to be exceptions. I didn't say all, but a lot of multiplatform games, sans mods, are.
And you missed the second half of my point, which I guess it isn't as important to you guys.

Autodidactdystopia4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

@ nathan

Im not even pushing like an elitist like i usually do.

that video doesn't even come close to letting you know the difference.

youtube standard bitrate is 8-10mbps for 1080 streams.

blu-rays usually range from 17-38mbps

when we use recording software to record pc games it usually records in the range of 350-480mbps

then we upload to youtube which destroys quality completely, even for console recordings. which is why most console owners think their games look so good, youtube cant even reliably reproduce console video output at quality.

To see how it looks on PC you need to actually run it on pc or download a 4-gigabyte 1-minute video which as you know is completely impractical.

long story short...

THE DIFFERENCE IS HUGE!

you just cant tell cause youd need 100 times the bandwidth to stream a lossless PC video.

Edit:

I woud also like to mention the fact that in this pc comparison you linked to The pc is recording that video which is on the order of 20X higher quality than a blu-ray @ some number like 4Gigs a minute being written to the hard disk simultaneously while also running that video game.

the console recording overhead however is being handled by a recording box.

There is so much more power in a pc right now than a console it is literally NOT funny.

ShinMaster4933d ago (Edited 4933d ago )

Again, trying too hard.

I also play on PC and output both my console and PC through my TV display. The difference in multiplatform games just isn't that huge. It is funny.
But some of you guys just sound desperate to make a point. The overall picture is still the same, with no major difference in lighting, shading, etc, regardless of resolution and lack of "lossless PC video".

Gives a damn about graphically heavy games? That's too vague.

There are millions of PC gamers who don't (give as much "damn").

-WoW
-League
-SC2

*these games aren't in the league of Crysis, Metro, and up.

You should have just said "some of the PC crowd".

Playstation19844935d ago

well i enjoy a game with better graphics than a game that does not. it's definitely a added bonus. And i play console.

ATi_Elite4934d ago

Yeh kinda cause the evolution of Graphics brings forth the evolution of gameplay!

Sure games like Farmville and Minecraft are no way graphical juggernauts but are very fun but then u have games like Battlefield 3 and STALKER that just took video game immersion to a whole new level by making the gamer really feel he/she is in the Game World!

Also Games like Half Life 2, L.A. Noir, and Heavy Rain really brought a higher level of gamer emotion for NPC's due to the fact that NPC's now emit emotions and facial expressions.

this all brings fourth a richer and deeper gameplay experience so yeh graphics do mean a lot!

As brilliant and Great as Oregon Trail is it can't touch the Full Blown experience I get from Guild Wars 2!

Though this is my answer the proposed question; "do graphics matter" (the author of this article also seems to believe that it doesn't)?

I always read on gaming sites (N4G specifically) about how gamers enjoy playing retro titles on their gaming devices. Sure, resolution may've been improved, better frame rates, and clearer sound quality, but the title's essence that makes it a true classic, is the main reason why we still indulge in the nostalgia, every now and then.

PopRocks3594935d ago

You could argue for the PS2 which was the weakest of its generation (not counting the Dreamcast, obviously).

zebramocha4935d ago

@jades The wii was only successful because of the wii mote, most who bought it did so for its novel approach to gaming.

@pop the ps2 was weaker in comparison to the other console but that did not stop Sony's first from trying to make beautiful games

tubers4935d ago

Read the article, like most of people here think is the conclusion: Good graphics is great but good gameplay is important as well.

gillri4935d ago

PC gamers care about graphics soo much they buy insane amount on advanced tech only for never even close to be fully utilised unlike console which get eveyr last bit of juice squeezed out of their hardware then you take a massive leap.

its like buying a ferrari and driving it and 20mph, Uncharted 2 and 3is still the best looking game on all platforms becasue graphics is soo much more than how high a resolution you have or how many particle per second can be created, or how volumetric smoke blah blah blah

animation and polish is about as important as you can get in games, mix that with amazing tech like the sand in ucharted 3 and you have the best looking game created.

Also a PC game can never have the polish of a console exclusive game as developers dont have complete final control over how a game looks on a PC. I cant wait to get halo 4 on my xbox and see the visual majesty all the reviewers are talking about....on 7 year old hardware

PC gamers can keep talking about their uber rigs and Ill keep laughing at how redundant upgrading your rigs in this modern era of gaming has become....hence why i havent upgraded in 3 years

HenryFord4935d ago

First of all: Making generalizations based on your biased view upon the gaming world is always a bad idea. I don't buy the "insane amount of advanced tech only for never even close to be fully utilised", I buy it to be utilised. I do a loooooooot more than gaming with my PC and thus my decision to play everything I can on PC (I still own a XBox 360 but that is mainly for the console-exclusives nowadays). The graphics are an added bonus - it just looks better if you can play in 1080p, it also feels better. And high-res textures are adding the rest. That is only for those games that are console ports which take up a huge amount of released games this generation. I didn't upgrade my PC in the last 3 years either (apart from hard-drives), and I am still running nearly everything maxed out on new games.
And about Uncharted being the best looking game on all platforms? That is simply nonsense. Crysis looks better than that, because it is not just about the high resolution. You get very high resolution textures, you get wonderful flora and fauna in the game, the whole envoirenment is ridicolous in it's beauty. Everything mixes well together and it looks just stunning. The player-models are really fine as well and so is the animation. That makes it the best looking game to date. It is however by no means the best game to date, I didn't care much for it.

But those arguments are so stupid I don't even get why making them in the first place. If the PC-player enjoys beautiful graphics? Then simply let him enjoy it. Someone likes gameplay more and doesn't care about gaphics? So be it. Why should I even care?
For me graphics are very important in games, I like to look at beautiful things when I'm playing. But graphics cannot make a bad game good or a good game great. But graphics also don't diminish the fun I can have with games if they aren't "on-top".

Faelan4934d ago

There's an important difference though. Driving that Ferrari at 20mph is going to get you a hell of a lot more chicks than any overpowered PC gaming rig.

My "Ferrari" may only go 20mph a lot of the time, partially thanks to consoles only going 20mph, but when you get it on that race track or private road, it's an absolute joy to ride.

More importantly though, it gives me options that consoles can't even get -remotely- close at doing (ever tried running 4 EVE online clients on two screens?). There's a lot more to PC gaming than just shiny graphics.

Still doesn't get me any chicks though. Which is probably a good thing... Otherwise my wife wouldn't let me have this wonderful custom built rig of mine :)

Mini05104934d ago

what a narrow minded idiot...

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio14d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9214d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
