So more movie watchers picked up Ps3 seeing the software side has only one game in the charts.

Wow, it looks every console kicked ass in January. It was a great month for gaming in general.

I wonder if the DS had shortages? It seemed to fall well below the expected number.

It's interesting that the 360 outsold the PS3 at Christmas, but the PS3 claimed January. It's quite possible DMC4 pushed it over the top. I don't know one way or the other about 360 shortages, so I'm not going to say that it's responsible, but it's also a possibility.

I think I now understand Microsofts admitted "excuse" as to why the 360 had less stock in the U.S. They or don't want to admit defeat giving an excuse to go along with there numbers, or it is indeed true that December "caught them by surprise"

Black Friday for VG (ugh, its Thursday), first they had to correct the UK charts this week (and actually putting the PS3 above the 360), and now this. More then 100K off in the US. LOL.

What's also fascinating is the PS3 almost besting the "untouchable" Wii... when was the last time the Wii sold in the high 200,000's in America?

So that's 270K for the U.S., probably 250K~300K for Europe, and another 160K for Japan. That is a monstrous figure considering January is supposed to be a slow month for hardware. I may be mistaken, but didn't they only manage to sell like 90,000 PS3s in the U.S. exactly a year ago?

Sony has been really good about making sure that PS3s are available everywhere, and only having half the SKUs that Microsoft needs to supply helps allocation as well (though the one SKU strategy is still ideal).

BTW, I can't imagine what hardware sales for the PS3 are going to look like once MGS gets released.

However those saying that the Xbox 360 didnt have shortages choeck out online websites such as bestbuy and circuit city. The premium is not available in stores so it would appear that there is some sort of shortage. My zipcode is 20874 and the ones I have close to me show that. Now the question would be, considering the amounts that were sold for January, why? I mean MS should have an average of what they need to produce to sell monthly. Did they expect to sell less than what they sold so they produced less consoles than they have done in previous months? Its up for debate because knowing if its ho it happened or if there is another explanation would just be a guess.

Isn't it fishy that a couple days before the NPD numbers came out M$ says that there were shortages. If they would have said this halfway through January then it would be believable, but a few days before the NPD numbers real fishy.

some said before. Everything changed on the stoke of midnight Dec 31st 2007. First WB blu exclusive, PS3 fans buying alot more software per Console, PS3 outselling x360 in 2007 worldwide, Media kiss up to the PS3, and now this. Man this news just made my week :)

It should be obvious that the fact that the PS3 beat the xbox 360 in Jan was simply because of shortables.. it's only logical... Remember this is not due to DMC.. since that came didn't come out last month... was game could posibly help the PS3 sell more units than the xbox 360? You can also tell by the software sells.. you can't see any improvement in terms of game sells for the PS3 and xbox 360 games are constant.... you can also see this by looking at the December numbers... where the xbox 360...

look at the difference for the previous month:

Xbox 360 - 1,260,000
PS3 - 797.600

I'm willing to consider any logical explanation... cna you explain the drastic change when the nothing has change as far as software on any of the consoles if shortages is not it?

Shortages is the only explanation... now if it was that Metal Gear was released or something... but nothing has change...

I believe the shortages are due to microsoft sorting the RROD problem... they had to remove all defective consoles and ensure that new consoles dont have the same problem.

Anyone who's being a gamer for a long time know that a console does not drop or increase unless something happens.. from one month to another...

2008 is another year for the ps3. PS3 outsells xbox 360 in europe and japan, now it outsells the xbox 360 in US. It's a real surprise.

I think all us sony fans saw that this trend was going to begin. I have to admit I was starting to get a little worried, there is only so much microsoft propaganda you can ignore. Awesome. We haven't even gotten to the big name PS3 games this year either. Looks like the beginning of the end for 360.

The only reason there was a stock problem is because MS, for some unknown reason, have not been shipping regularly.

This is completely different to something being in high demand.

Only way to be sure is to wait for the February numbers. Although people will be quick to say Microsoft were just spinning their supply issues, they actually did have a supply problem it seems. Good month, but lets see if it continues because there might be alot of red faces come next month when the Feb figures are released.

And I certainly don't want to be embarrassed

please 360 is on a supply constraint because they are refusing to fix 360's and people need to resort to buying another one.

I dont think theres an excuse for this.. Peolpe that thought otherwise should take it like a man, sit down, and take theyre loss.. If the PS3 sold better.. Then it just sold better

I think there are a couple of factors that are weighing in on this:

1) Alleged shortages - Personally I dont see that as an issue out in California...it could be elsewhere but honestly just dont really buy it. If there are shortages I think it would be more a factor for February than for January. Either way...I dont put much stock in this.

2) Price - Others have said it and I will agree with it. The 360 is way over priced right now for how long its been out in the market. I think MS wanted to see how they would do through the holidays compared to the PS3 at the price point they set and bundles. This should be a clear sign of a price cut to come for MS...maybe @ GDC?

3) Lack of Game Announcements - 2008 so far has no real clear "I must have it exclusive" for the 360. Sure they have the exlusive content for the GTA game but that alone is not enough to out shine what is looking like a stellar Sony 2008 lineup.

4) Blu Ray winning over HD-DVD - This just might be having a bigger effect than most realize. The PS3 is still the cheapest and arguably one of the best Blu-Ray players out there. With HD-DVD getting trumped...I am sure the PS3 is enjoying a bit of a boost in sales from movie enthusiasts who are now making a choice on format and buying the PS3 as their movie player.

Anyway you look at it, this will be a wake up call for sure to MS. North America is a battleground they covet and they wont give it up easily.

only a little amount of shops have stock issues with the 360 becuase yea, theyr selling like before but after Microsoft found out the NPD numbers they delayed deliveries to show that they are having "stock problems". This month the ps3 wont be that close to the wii coz from where i work, its was easier to order wiis this time than before so the stocks are higher than usual. As for the Ps3 it will probaly outsell the 360 by a not so big amount, or the other way round but the overall point is that the ps3 is cathing up, YEA!!!

Remember a week ago there was a show with Geoff Kieghly, I think one of the guys predicted the PS3 would beat the 360 at least once this year

im just wondering about these so called shortages.. only recently has this become an issue.. i think this first came up last week... but again.. we are TWO weeks into february.. these are january numbers, so uh.. i dunno, just seems weird. That and why in the hell is there a shortage anyways, i mean i can understand wii.. cuz people and their dids are just crazy, but the 360.. the numbers werent overwelmingly great, the numbers match last years numbers.. so uh.. i dunno.. just seems fishy.

I really think people are over-exaggerating the individual reasons behind this. It's certainly a complicated issue, and many of the reasons people have listed likely contributed in some way.

My personal theory is that the 360 sold a bit less than it usually would due to a limited supply shortage, but that the PS3 probably would've outsold it anyway because of the victory of Blu-Ray in the format war.

Either way, I'm surprised at how much ALL the consoles sold, given the lack of any major release in January.

I'd believe the shortage excuse if I'd heard of the shortages in January, but apparently that's not the case. Good news for Sony anyways. I didn't expect the PS3 to outsell 360 so soon in the year! It's nice to know. Now if Sony could get the software sales up, and continue this sales trend I think Sony will definitely have more sales than 360 by the end of the year. Just need to get that software up!! I'm not sure if the actual percentage of software sales is the same for 360 and PS3, or close, but judging from what I'm seeing PS3 has catching up to do in the software side.

MS you are in some serious trouble now. I love the 360 but 08 has been a pure disaster for the 360 hardware numbers/momentum/media support. It's a shame because I love the 360 way more than my PS3 and despise pretty much all Sony products and the company in general.

But I must say that the 360 has %100 lost ever bit of momentum it had. It's either going to wake up MS or you will watch the ship slowly sink as the sales numbers go down and down until it's Xbox1 all over again.

It's really hard to be a 360 fanboy when MS gives you no ammunition to fight with.
