Once you accept that everything before RE4 was SURVIVAL horror and everything after RE4 was ACTION then you can appreciate each side of it for what they offer.

Jinkies4964d ago

Not really, I think most of us think

"How could they ruin the series"

After they compare the old games from the new ones, like what Ca,977 has done below.

I've just been playing RE:DC on my Vita again and it made me think; why on earth did they ruin this series?

caseh4964d ago

You can only stick to the same formula for so long. The author of the article touches upon it for a few different franchises and how the shift is more focused on the genre as a whole rather than that individual series.

I think that Resisdent evil 6 should have been a spin off so then less people would have given out about it.

Digimortal4964d ago

Finally someone out there who has the same opinion as me on the RE games. About damn time.

MehmetAlperTR4964d ago

so making a survival horror game is classic and making an action game without horror is modern.. NO WAY.. This is bull..t

What people perhaps forget is that the whole Resident Evil series has always been founded on uncertainty. It surely owes some of its roots to the graphic adventures popular from the mid 80s (e.g. Maniac Mansion) to the late 80s/ early 90s (Monkey Island and Alone in the Dark). But Resident Evil was released in the fully 3D age when the popularity of humourous graphic adventures started to dwindle - maybe because they just seemed too slow to many gamers. It was a kind of throwback then for Resident Evil to exist in the first place. What attracted to me to the series wasn't the B-movie science at all. It was the fact that it was set in a kind of 'haunted' mansion with secret passages and mysteries. From my memory, Resident Evil 2 might be the best game overall but the Resident Evil remake on the Gamecube is the most traditionally 'gothic horror'. I'm not sure if Code Veronica is any good. From what I've played, it seems to be hideously aged in anything except cutscenes. So, from that point, I can see how Resident Evil 4 was regarded as a renaissance of the series. But that game also diasappointed me in the way that it seemed to disregard the gamer's thirst for any kind of puzzle. The environments, many in earthy brown, are drawn more to create an overall impression rather than to be held up to close scrutiny where the lack of detail (as opposed to the beautiful prerendered remake) becomes apparent. Fortunately, the boss battles (and the maze / mine cart section) in RE4 are memorable and, in many ways, they make the game. A lot of the rest of the game veers between scary and kitsch (or scarily kitsch) - like the trader 'What are you buying?' - erm whatever seems to make it possible for you to teleport to exactly where I'm going next.

But there were a lot of survival horror series last generation - Eternal Darkness, Silent Hill, Haunting Ground, even humourous spins on it (Gregory Horror Show).

For me, Bioshock really became the next Resident Evil game that people wanted to play. And Infinite will probably be too.

Capcom's willingness to invest in experiments and scrap them sets them apart form many other developers (Nintendo have a similar methodology). Far too often companies push a game setting or game mechanic that is just not that good and the final product is middling or poor.
