Surviving Horror: Illbleed

“You will shit yourself with fear,” proclaimed the now-infamous trailer. Illbleed’s an irreverent genre piece from Japan, renowned for its bizarre mechanical approach to survival horror and founded on the classic tradition of the B-movie. It comes from Climax Graphics, who’ve previously made waves with Dreamcast launch title Blue Stinger, by swapping antiquated Survival Horror cameras for a less cinematic behind-the-back perspective for the game’s Western release. Illbleed is equally unconventional and remains the most peculiar entry into survival horror since its debut.

The Sega Dreamcast was a system that had some really cool and innovative games. However, the console never had as much widespread appeal as the PS2 or Xbox.

I would play a seaman remake today. No doubt.

Longie_long1541d ago

We encourage all gamers to enjoy playing with their seaman.

phoenixwing1541d ago

I think outtrigger is really underrated as a game for the dreamcast. It was quite good for the time.

Shuckylad1541d ago

If I could take two consoles with me into the after life it would be the Snes and dreamcast.

Jiub1541d ago

I can get behind SNES, but Dreamcast? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I need an explanation

ApocalypseShadow1541d ago (Edited 1541d ago )

Dreamcast was like an arcade console in the home. As Sega produced many games and brought them over. Third parties released their arcade fighters on the console and they were arcade perfect or better like Soul Calibur. Back when games were about instant fun because they had to be to draw you in.

Every console we play today is more about length of a game and added side missions or fluff to lengthen the game than arcade as many of the games aren't arcade like. There are arcade like games there. Especially fighters. But these consoles don't have the same feel as an arcade company that made an arcade like machine. Dreamcast was the end of an era as most gamers play at home, most console games don't release in the arcade and multiplayer is through an online connection that kills that in person social gathering.

Gamers like myself that grew up on arcades, can tell the difference from popping tokens and nickels and quarters at arcades and just pressing start with a controller. Dreamcast had that feeling. It had a short life but it sure left an impression. Which is why I have two units to make sure. Because it's soul never dies(Soul Calibur)

ApocalypseShadow1541d ago (Edited 1541d ago )

I'm not sure if my explanation below fits why you like Dreamcast. But that's how I felt about it. Even today, there are no light gun games anymore. And today's TVs don't even support them. I have to keep a CRT TV just to keep light gun gaming alive.

And online is okay. But it's like playing poker in person compared to over the internet with a no name and no face opponent. The game is the same but you don't get the poker face looks, the body movement, the physical cards or chips. Dreamcast had that arcade feel and local, multiplayer fun.

Dreamcast is far and away my favorite console of all time.

Bathory6661541d ago

If you like survival horror, i highly recommend D2. It’s really cool. Reminiscent of deadly premonition. Great atmosphere and music. Super campy and cheesy but unique. Just emulate it.

Dreamcast Prices Have Gone Insane: What Games Should You Collect?

Retro gaming consoles tend to follow a predictable price pattern as they age. They are expensive on release, somewhat rapidly drop in price as new merchandise becomes available, and then inevitably, THIS happens.

Collect games you like that you will enjoy playing or you enjoyed playing.

ApocalypseShadow1834d ago

Correct. A lot of these games I bought to play and keep. If they just happen to be valuable, so much the better. But I bought to play. Bought a second Dreamcast just in case the first broke and I can continue playing them.

Although I have used emulation on tablet and my phone to limit the wear and tear on the console lasers until I learn how to fix them like PS1 and PS2. But should be just as easy if the parts are available. DIY is always great.

Doge1833d ago (Edited 1833d ago )

Get the TerraOnion MODE or GDEMU for the Dreamcast and the XStation for the PS1. They’re Optical Drive Emulators that basically mimic a disc drive but read games off of an SD card (or even a SATA SSD with the MODE). That way you can prevent wear and tear on your consoles and your discs.

The MODE and GDEMU are easy drop-in solutions, while the XStation will require some soldering and pin lifting. But it’s soooo worth the investment if you wanna play on actual hardware.

/close thread, also this entire bandwagon to collect games for “investment” or to “resell” just made the scene much more about the money over the art and appreciation of hard copies. People think “limited run?! How can I cash in?!” Over “damn this game was pretty epic, this will be on my shelf” people buy limited copies of games for resale over appreciation or for fandom of said game franchise. Buy legitimate pieces of gold or brush up on bit coin or the stock market if you want better returns!

CDbiggen1834d ago

I've got Skies of Arcadia, Marvel Vs Capcom, Powerstone 2, and a few others, but really I hate this whole retro collecting shit. I just want to play all the games I want, whenever I want, on whatever I want, hence emulation - don't be a sucker and buy these old games.

TheColbertinator1833d ago

I will stab anyone in the eye who tries to swipe my Dreamcast collection

Good-Smurf1833d ago (Edited 1833d ago )

Dreamcast owner developed a habit of not taking care of their games, most I see on sell were disc only rarely CIB copies.
I can see why if it were like N64 case but these are Jewel Case they manhandled them and use it for frisbee or something.

Gunstar751833d ago

European dremvast cases shatter when you open them. They were terribly designed

I have a box of DC games in my Garage and 2 dreamcasts 1 x jap 1 x UK

CDbiggen1833d ago

That they were. About 50% of mine are flimsy in some way. Gotta love that blue though.

WeAreLegion1833d ago

It's kind of absurd how high retro prices are right now, in general.

Jiub1833d ago

Definitely. I remember going to a local buy/sell place and seeing an original Xbox for like $25 bucks last year. Now, they want double or more. Craziness.

WeAreLegion1833d ago (Edited 1833d ago )

Same. They're $80 right now here. I worked at a retro store for years and I'm kind of upset I didn't get more games then. I sold Rule of Rose like an IDIOT.
