Splitkick: XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a landmark turn-based strategy game and the best of the genre I have ever played. Calling it a turn-based game, however, does it somewhat of a disservice. Too many players will dismiss it after hearing the genre description, which is a back-handed compliment to how much Firaxis elevates the genre in this release.
While there have been many real-time strategy games with campaign modes, few turn-based strategy titles have a world outside of flavor text, or a story outside of emergent gameplay. With a restrained number of cutscenes and semi-frequent commentary from AI advisors, XCOM crafts a chilling narrative of Earth’s first alien encounter and the international defense agency tasked with resisting it. Early encounters are innocuous enough, and even rookies can emerge unscathed. The last mission I played stressed me out so much I’ve since put the game down. My life is stressed out enough as it is.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.
If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.
Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
